Glock or S&W M&P 9mm

My brother just bought one from Hoffman's in CT. List price was almost $700 and they were selling them for $399 with 2 17 rd mags. Damn, I wish I didn't live in Mass, where I can only have 10 rd. mags.:(

Glock

1. Proven history of reliability and durability.
2. Easy to get parts.
3. A monkey can service the gun.
4. Tons of accessories.

Forget the problems with Kabooms. In the recent few weeks I've seen several pistols from different manufacturers Kaboom due to ammunition.

I got the 26 for my 4th handgun 4 years ago and I carry it 75% of the time. I have a MP9 at my FFL now waiting for me to pick up. I think it looks promising and the positive reviews for S&W service sold me.

The Glock 19 is one heck of an efficient platform if it's ergonomics work for you. Some people just don't like the way they feel, myself included. However it does have ease of maintenance and you can do most repairs yourself, abundant supply of parts and accessories and generally a proven track record of performance.
The M&P is still relatively new, may or may not have some unknown growing pains and for the most part repairs would probably involve shipping the weapon back to Smith right now. After a few more years it may have the same supply market that the Glock does, so to me, the M&P has great potential.
I would say go handle both side by side, get some trigger time on both if possible and then decide from there. I like the feel of the M&P from the start, but I always have to "try" to like Glocks grip.

I think if you like the Glock as well as your other options your choice is clear. I don't think you can find a longer lasting, more reliable pistol for the money. They tend to be accurate as well. Also you mention Glock parts being easy to get???? Who do you know that has had to buy Glock parts????:neener:

Any word on when the Compacts might be getting the revisions (or if they even need them)?

I've been looking at the M&P9C... not sure if I can justify getting one since I shoot the G19 so well (I wouldn't say the G19 is comfortable in my hand, but somehow it forces my hand to hold it exactly the same way each time which has translated into accuracy) and the M&P9C has similar dimensions & weight with 3 less rounds. Sadly, haven't had a chance to hold one yet....

None of the above. I have a Ruger KP89DC. Wouldn't trade it for either. And they're a heck of a lot cheaper than both of the others. I don't like plastic on my guns.

For those of you wondering, the above company now makes lightweight aluminum and stainless steel frames for the full size Glock pistols. So the whole not liking plastic on your guns isn't an excuse anymore. However I believe you have be somewhat of a Glock fan to want to do this because they're about $279 or so for the frame and the recommend a Glock armorer or certified gunsmith to do the job for you so the gun doesn't become out of battery. I just read about this in American Handgunner and I think its actually a pretty slick setup. Plus there's nothing wrong with doing a little customization, especially on a Glock, which is a gun people are really only use to seeing one way at the range.

+1 for the Smith. I have a fullsize and a compact M&P 9mm. I love them both. I've never been a fan of the Glocks but the Smith sold me. I'll be getting a .45 as soon as its available.

It points more naturally for me and is far more ergonomic than the Glock, the triggers on the three that I own are all quite crisp once you get past the safety takeup, the mag capacity is superb for the grip frame size, and the replacable backstraps means that my wife and I can share the same basic pistol. The M&P balances a lot nicer than the Glock, at least to me. The best part is that the M&P is almost a hundred dollars less expensive than the Glock 19.

The Glock right now has the advantage in mag prices and holster availability.
Agreed. I own both.

In my opinion, Glock's specialty is 9mm pistols. The G17 and G19 are two of thier finest models, if not the finest, in their entire model line. Go with the 19, you won't regret it.

I love my 19, and when I live in a state that allows me to carry again it will likely become my main carry gun. The 19 IMO (after owning 4 Glocks) is the best product in their line. I am selling my other three and only keeping the 19. It would be an excellent choice that will serve you well over the years.

The MP line looks interesting to me, and I have yet to hear anything bad about them. I have a SW40VE that has been flawless aside from the heavy trigger pull which I fixed. I think Smith has done alot to fix their line of autos and I wouldnt have any fear of buying another. All I can say is get the one that feels best to you.

I have a G19 and my wife has a M&P9c. They're both fine pistols. If I were choosing new, I'd probably go with the S&W due to the trigger and ergonomics. But the difference isn't enough to make me want to get rid of my Glock.

I think it is really orange versus tangello.

What I mean by that is that they are both the same format and it will really come down to your personal feel or feelings.

While the G19 is the more proven, has far more access and mods for it and IMHO the 9mm polymer pistol all others are measured against.... it still feels like crap in my hand. Funny how I shoot them well, I just cant stand they way they feel when shooting. Glock is the orange.... been there done that and it will always be an orange.

The M&P 9mm is a great feeling gun, good ergonimics, easy to use and affordable. Eventually the access and fanbase might reach half the size of the glocks base. M&P is the the Tangello and they are new on the scene... some think they taste better then oranges.

When they start making Tangello juice is when I will buy into it.

The Glock 19 is the Original, every other polymer gun is trying to be a Glock. The Glock 9mm handgun is IMHO the finest 9mm ever produced with the 17, 19 being the best of the bunch, the 34, 26 are also fine firearms.

That being said S&W make the best revolvers today with Ruger a close second.

Revolvers: S&W, Ruger

Semi Auto Pistols: Glock, HK, Sig, Khar

1911's: Kimber, Ed Brown, Les Baer, Colt, Spingfield.

Not all but the best of breed

i tend to like the glock because it has been out a while, and is proven. the fact that it is easy to work on and get parts for doesn't hurt.

I have not shot a M&P pistol, but I have held a full size .40 calber version. I would say the egronomics are excellent. The gun point naturally, and has a familar 1911 angled grip. The trigger on the display version was gritty to say the least, with a bit of play in the movement. Nothing a quailty gunsmith could take car of in short time. I was looking at buying the 9mm version which only recently was legalized for sale in Mass. To bad Smith had to make the trigger 10lbs to pass Mass AG requirements before being sold in state. The M&P is one of the few plastic pistols we can buy new in this state since Glocks, and other manufactures are not approved for sale.

I have a Glock 19...17, 20, 21, 27, 36 (2), and a 32 that I'll pick up on Friday. That said, I'm not going to give you an "official" opinion because I really like the M&P and think Smith really nailed this one.

I grew up in Athens, graduated from UGA, so I'm forever a "bleed Red and Black" Dawg fan. The same applies to my affinity for Glocks: It's just what I like the best and what I'll always shoot and carry if I have a choice. Whether it's the best or not just doesn't enter the equation for me.

So, if you like the S&W, go for it.

Hey man, while you're in the gun store, you should take a look at the Glocks. I bet you'd like'em!

:neener: :p

Glock = righteous :evil: fun!

Roll Tide!

I have to agree with Blackadder on this one. I own a G19, G22 and G26. I also own a full size M&P 9mm.

I shoot all of them regularly. I love the ergonomics of the M&P, but I trust my life and those of my family with Glock.

The M&P is a real pleasure to shoot though.

Buy what tickles your fancy (not that the original poster is still trying to spend his Christmas money...LOL - but for others that may stumble upon this thread).
