1911!!!!!!!

The G21 is a functional, reliable handgun...a bit fat and chunky...but it works.
The 1911 has the historical interests, plus you can customize it the way you want for a personalized piece. It is also thinner for CCW and the hand. There are many more accessories for it...from 460 Rowland, 400 Corbon, 22 conversion units, etc.
What other gun chased Pancho Villa around the desert, went through two world wars, countless police actions, in every clime and place, cities, arctic winds, deserts, jungles, and vast amounts of competition... all the way to accompanying a gent who captured SoDamn Insane?
You want a beater upper that'll work like a pick up, get the glock.
You want something you can turn into a hotrod, get the 1911.
What fits you hand better?
Mine?...........1911's all the way. And my next gun...another 1911!

1911.

Your poll shows a dearth of nods for the Glock

The Glocks almost always work, whereas 1911s take work to get them to work, often as not. I think of 1911s like an European sports car - more fun than a Toyota, but more money and time involved to keep them running.

For a range gun, the 1911 is a lot of fun. I'd have to agree with Werewolf though in that the USP, the Sig P220, and the Glock 21 have definite advantages over the 1911 from a CCW, LEO, or military application. Higher round capacity ( expcept for the Sig), more reliable design, lighter, less maintenance. When I was a kid, I thought the 1911 was it. Don't get me wrong, I still really love the 1911 design, but I don't think it's as reliable ( at least my experience backs this up) as the some of the newer more modern designs. I have a Springfield Loaded model, and it is the only gun I own that jams once in a while. All the other pistols I own are modern combat style handguns, and they haven't jammed on me yet. This would include a USP 45, Sig 226 & 225, Beretta 92FS, CZ75SA .40 ( although this pistol does not like Win White Box .40), and a Glock 19. Granted the Springfield hasn't been worked by a smith, but I think if you're going to buy a gun, it should work right out of the box. By the way, I do plan on getting one or 2 more 1911's at some point.
