glock 22 and springfield xd

i need another 40. want a full size, and have narrowed it down to 2 (well, maybe 3)...

need some input on the glock 22 and springfield xd-40. are there any absolute cons to either one? i handload, so i'm a little concerned about the exploding glock stories i hear... things like mag cost and availability would be nice to know, as well as rust problems (i know the plastic won't rust, but the barrel is still steel - how much neglect can they handle?), aftermarket parts availability and necessity, etc... spent the last 3 days on glock talk, firing line, and here looking for input.

if i'm able to afford it, i'll just get the sig 226 and be done w/ it, but it seems that the sig might be a little on the unobtainable side ($$$). through much driving and harassing a lot of shops, i've been able to eliminate beretta and h&k, so i'm down to glock and xd...

I don't have any experience with the Glock, so I can't tell you anything about it. On the other hand, I do own an XD40, and I can tell you it has a fully supported chamber, and the brass always looks nice and reloadable after firing. Accuracy and reliabilty have been great with everything but 1 box of Winchester 180 grainers that didn't feed very smoothly.

I forgot to mention factory 12 round mags run about $25 each.

The finish on the XD is not great. I have had a couple of rust spots after hiking in the summer and carrying IWB, but the rust wiped away pretty easily. I have heard of Springfield refinishing the gun with their Armory-kote, but it hasn't been that big of a deal to me.

I have an XD-40 service model with night sights, love the gun. I haven't had any finish problems at all, I just keep it well oiled and in good shape. I can recommend it as a good gun. The Glock? Don't have one.

I had a 22C (the one with the ported barrel) for a few years and put 2000+ rounds through it. Very reliable. Fairly accurate - sights are more for defensive purposes than for pinpoint target plinking. A 40 caliber Glock does have a bit of muzzle flip when fired. A Glock either fits your hand or it doesn't. One point which irked me was the 40 S&W Glocks are prone to slide peening. Mine did. Slide peening is a nice Glockese phrase for the gun knocking small chunks out of each side of its slide. It's apparently related to the gun flexing when fired. It eventually stops and doesn't seem to hurt anything but I'm a fossil that doesn't think portions of your slide should disappear just because you fired the gun. But that's just me. As an on-duty type of carry weapon, I'd tote the Glock in a heartbeat because of it's reliability. Have never even held the Springfield so I can't comment on it.

Another good thing I see with XD's compared to the Glocks is the feeling. I think the XD feels much better in my hands than a Glock. Watch out for barrel rust though when you are buying. I bought mine new and when I got home and cleaned it prior to shooting I noticed orange on the patches and when i looked at the barrel in light I saw a thin line of rust in each of the rifling grooves which is still there. I dont really mind it as long as it doesnt get worse. Pluse Im thinking of getting a new barrel later on anyways. $449 after taxes with 3 12rd mags and a holster at a gunshow.

i didn't see any strong support in favor of the glock in this thread. i really liked the glock's mag cap, and it feels ok in my hand.

however, when i left the gunshop this afternoon, i was down $470 ($497 after taxes), and i was up a full size xd-40, 3 15-round mags, a garbage holster, 2 boxes of mag tech ammo, and 2 half-hour range passes.

its no sig, but i think it will do.

now... gotta develop a plan for accesories...

I have a G-22 i bought about 2 weeks ago, i have about 600 rounds threw it, and i have not had one problem. All glocks will have some Slide peening , i have a glock 17 that has some slide peening but it has stoped now.. The new glocks have been redone in the area where you have slide peening , so i would say go for the glock , but there is nothing wrong with the XD. I just like glocks better.

I own both a glock and an xd. With the Glock you get 3 more rounds per mag, the mags are much cheaper, accessories are more abundant and the finish is pretty tough.
With the XD, you get a grip safety (nice) and a more ergonomic grip shape, better sights and better trigger.
The XD is a bit chunkier so if concealment is an issue then you might want to think about that too.
At the range, I am more accurate with the XD than the G22.

Each one has it's pros and cons. Maybe you should buy both.

you bring up a valid point, and i know in my heart of hearts i will probably wind up w/ both... but, for the time being, my handgun collection has been expanded by one, w/ my first springfield...

I have two XDs - a 4" and a 5" both in .40. My next one will be the subcompact in .40. I have had no problems with them, they are reliable, accurate and easy to maintain.

As far as reloading goes, I had reloaded and fired about 2000 rounds through the 4" using Rainier 165gr FP bullets when I bought the 5" model. That same round would not feed well in the 5". I switched to a 165gr RNFP and that took care of the feed problem.

I don't dislike Glocks at all but as Murphster said, they either fit your hand or the don't. I've shot a number of them thanks to a friend who loves them. But with a side by side comparison with the XD, I have always liked the fit and feel of XD better.

so, what happened?? a remington 700 adl in 300 win mag was on clearance. well, can't pass that up... then, uh oh! remington 700 lvsf's were on special price, plus $50 rebate... oh well, better have 2 of those at that price. oops! now what?? i need a 40... add that to my mauser 98 that i just started work on (and in her eyes is a new gun because i've got as much into it as i would a new rem, and it no longer resembles a mil-surp in any way)...

last year she told me 'no more guns!' and that weekend netted me a sig 229 and a ruger srh in 480 (and a scope)... this year... well, the year's not done yet...

but you know... absolutely agree w/ you: a new gun is a fantastic feeling!
