I currently only have a revolver, a S&W 640, and am considering getting a semiautomatic.

Can anybody tell me the good, bad, and ugly about these two weapons, point me to good webpages, etc?

I am really trying to find information that does a good job of distinguishing fact from opinion -- people often get so emotional about guns, sometimes that is hard to do.

Perhaps I should have put this in the SA forum... if a mod feels like moving this thread there, I'd appreciate it!

They are both great pistols, I prefer the Glock because that is what I am accustomed to. I would suggest you shoot both, or at the very least handle them both and decide which feels better in your hand regardless of what anybody says.

OK....I own an XD, but when I was shopping for my pistol I tried alot of different pistols. First was the XD 9mm service(4in) then the glock 17, 19, and 23. The Beretta px4 storm, the s&w sigma 9mm and 40cal. I also test the Ruger p95 and afterall I went back to the XD but I opted for the subcompact vs. the service. What maid me choose the XD? The grip. The grip on the XD felt the most comfortable, the PX4 was a very very close 2nd place. The grip angle on the glock was a tad to much for me, it didn't feel natural in my hands same goes for the S&W. Honestly I hated the ruger. I hope this is some help. As for wedsites I really only recommend THR and XDTALK.com. Now most guys over on XDTALK are XD owners so some are biased but some are former Glock owners and some are former XD owners that now own Glocks so Check it out.

I would stay away from both xdtalk and glocktalk so their opinions don't sway you. Each has a great deal of bias as would be expected. Kind of like going to a Ford dealership and asking for a honest comparison between an Expedition and a Tahoe. As Crazy mentioned, the grip angles are quite different from the Glock to the XD and is definitely something that you need to feel out for yourself.

I went with the XD

I never fired the Glock but my boss owned one (and swears by it) and I handled it before I went with the XD 40. I am somewhat new to handguns so I thought I would not be that biased towards the grip but you need only to handle them both before you make a choice. For me the XD felt much better in my hand.

Oh ler me mention that the Glock was a subcompact and the XD I handled was a service (4"). The grip angle made the difference.

The range I go to (http://www.topgunrange.com/) has both weapons available for rental, so I definitely plan on putting several hundred rounds through each before commiting to buying one.

I also stopped by Gander Mountain today, and the guy at the gun desk recommended a website called The Armory, where, apparently, they do stress-tests of the guns -- I still need to google the exact URL.

they are both great, i am not a glock fan though. in my opinon if you are to own a glock it should be 9mm, they do there best work in 9mm. the 19 being my favorite.

i have 2 xd's in .40 a serivce model and a sc model and they have both been 100% reliable and i love em. they are accurate and reliable, and they both concela well, the sc being the best for that. for a .40 pistol that is great imho there are few options, the xd is one of them.

I don't like the finger grooves on my Glock 23. They don't fit my fingers, so I have removed them. That's all I have against Glock's 3rd generation frame.

The XD is a great gun just like the Glock.................hpg

Glock 23 vs Springfield XD40

I've got an XD40, have shot my buddy's Glock .40.

Can anybody tell me the good, bad, and ugly about these two weapons, point me to good webpages, etc?

Either will do the job. Glock has more aftermarket parts available at this time, but XD is getting more all the time. The XD does not have the issue with shooting lead handloads that the Glock does.

Either will do the job.

I like the XD a little better. Both are great, and "feel" in your hand is very important, as well as the "feel" of the trigger to you.

All that said, the XDs have a cocked striker indicator and a loaded chamber indicator, and the Glock has neither. That is enough to tip the balance for me. "Press checks" on a Glock are a way to introduce a malfunction, or introduce doubt. For me, the indicators are a decisive difference.

Not sure of all the semantics here but I shot a friends Glock and it was 'ok',but when I fired my first XD it was (and is) love at first shooting. Both are great guns..I prefer the XD's however.

If the Glock 23 fits you go for it.

Parts are widely available and inexpensive should you need them and they require noting in the way of special tools for maintenance and (highly unlikely) repair.

:barf:XD's,:barf: on the other hand, not so much...

When you ask us to help pick between two VERY fine handguns (of quite similar design) then you're mostly just gonna' pull the die-hard GLOCK vs. XD guys off their brand-specific forums to defend their own buying decision. Rent & shoot both. Pick the one you shoot best...and BUY it.

Have not owned a Glock but I've shot Glock 45s, 40s, and 9s, and did fine with them. I have owned 3 XDs, a 45 and (2) 40s. I currently cc a xd40sc and I have a 9mm conversion barrel for it just for something a little different once in a while.

Both are fine weapons, I personally don't believe grip angle is a real issue unless you are switching back and forth between them all the time.

Neither are real pretty but I think a sidearm going bang everytime is absolutely beautiful.

i have a g23 and i like it a lot. that being said, go rent both and shoot em' buy what you like best. i don't really think you can go wrong with either.

for the .40 caliber --
XD new model with the side
safety switch

will be better than Glock.
Especially if you plan to reload the brass
-- brass ejected from the XD is much better
suited for repeated reloads than glock's ejects

For 9mm -- G19 would be better than the XD offerring.

just my .02

Honestly you could get either and have made an excellent choice. Its like asking if you like Coke or Pepsi. Nothing wrong with either one but everybody has a preference. What all this means is that you are basically gonna have to fork over the $50 at Top Gun Range, rent both and decide for yourself which you like better because other than which one you prefer there is really nothing else to consider.

CZ is Dr. Pepper.

only the 45s come with the slide safety. All the other xds have the trigger and grip safety.
