Today I attempted to switch my Glock 19 mag floor plates to the Vickers plates.
I used the Glock tool and pushed the little button that is visible on the bottom of the magazine. To my surprise the spring retainer inside the magazine shifted and the button is no longer there, so I have nothing to push in to remove the floor plate from the mag base. Any suggestions would be appreciated. The mags I have are factory marked Glock that came with the new pistol. Thanks, Jim

You have to squeeze the sides of the magazine body as you move the floor plate forward with the tool inserted. Here's a brief video showing the proper method for removal. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rJq_gYUPqQU

Sometimes they can be a "bear" to separate, so you may have to squeeze pretty hard on the sides to move the plate.

Hope this helps

They were rough to get off, but the butter knife trick worked. I just pried the dam things off and slid the new ones back on. wew

Next time, squeeze the sides in, and push the button.

Then set the back edge of the Glock floor-plate in a solid bench or counter top.

And give the mag body a swift whack with your hand.
Once it breaks loose, it will slide off easily.

Butter knives?
Seriously?
I don't even know how that could help, or work, without damaging either the mag or the base-plate?

There are three ways to remove the floorplates from Glock mags.

Here's the way taught in the armorer's course.

If the video won't load, here's a description of the process.

Ignore the retention tabs on the side of the magazine, and forget about trying to squeeze the magazine sides. Use a punch to push the floorplate retainer down into the mag and out of the way. Then you lever the floorplate off using the punch through the magazine floorplate hole.
To my surprise the spring retainer inside the magazine shifted and the button is no longer there...
That's the first step. The second step is to lever the floorplates off with the punch. It's best to have a punch that fits the hole closely to minimize any deformation of the hole.

This method can deform the hole in the floorplate, and will round off the retention tabs on the side of the magazine. The first time you do this on a new mag, the amount of force required is enough to make you think you're going to damage something.

The second method is like the first, but you place the back corner/edge of the floorplate against a hard surface and push while levering off the floorplate. This makes it less likely that you'll deform the hole in the floorplate but it will still round off the retention tabs.

The third method is to use a GTUL magazine disassembly tool. It works very well and there is no deformation to any parts.

Tools.....

As Tim The Tool Man Taylor said; you need the right tool for the job.
:D

I'd follow the Youtube.com tips or drop some coin on the www.glockstore.com mag tool. This handy gadget comes in 2 Glock sizes & allows quick/easy magazine work. Lenny Magill demos the tool too. ;)

I plan to buy one lime green Glock tool for my Gen 04 model 21 .45acp . I want to switch the plates to a blaze orange color, maybe blue for duty rounds-carry.

Another handy Glock source is; www.glockbooks.com & www.customizeyourglock.com . Morgan Boatman shows your nearly every tip & trick about Glocks out there.
