I know, problems with glock perfection! not possible right?

I've been having trouble with my very old pawn shop gen 1 g17. The slide only occasionally locks back. tried reloads, remington and winchester ammo. problem persists. As you can see in the pictures, the slide release lever is pushed as far outward from the gun as the frame permits and only the top inside corner catches the slide. the slide is also worn on the outer corner. The slide release lever has lots of side to side play.

it appears that the slide release lever may be being pushed outside the slide and the notch is failing to engage. You can see on the old slide release lever I just replaced that the whole corner is worn. not just the top, but also the inside edge. The new slide release lever is showing the same symptoms. any miracle solutions?

I would check to see that it locks back on empty mags by just inserting a mag and bring the slide back. If it doesn't lock back, I would look at the mag follower to make sure the part that engages the slide stop hasn't broke off.

Could also be weak mag springs.

locks back with empty mags, though it only just barely catches the top inside corner. fails to lock back after last shot with 2 brand new mags and the original non-drop free mag. Have tried new mags and new slide release.

the drop free mags are very loose in the magwell though. kinda looks like when they push the slide release up they also push it out.

I would post this over on Glocktalk, www.glocktalk.com , this one would be like throwing a bone to a pack of hungry hound dawgs. There are several GCA's on that board that like to help folks out. Man, looks like you have launched a little lead out of that puppy :what:

Mag springs get weak and mag followers can get worn, its one or the other, though I'd bet on needing new springs. Buy a magazine rebuild kit and it should fix the issues as would buying a new magazine.

Had it happen on my Glock 19 after 12 years and rebuilding the magazines cured the issue at least for the time being.

Magazine rebuild kits can be purchased from Glockmeister

Can you post a picture of the slide showing the slide stop notch? I'm running from memory on this. It's been many years since I attended the Glock armorers course. As I recall, the early Gen1 guns had a very small notch on the earliest runs. They changed that at some point partially due to the very problem you are having. There was a factory service notice to modify the notch to improve lockback on empty. Again, I'm running on memory.

When you assemble the slide stop, make sure the little spring IS UNDER THE TOP PIN and not over it. If the spring is under that top pin it will not have enough tension to lock the slide back.

You may find that the problem is because of hand postion while shooting it. I had this problem with my Sig and Glock. I moved my thumb and walla! Problem solved. So that may help.

I'm a lefty. thumb's not an issue. it does it for my friends too so I know I"m not just limp-wristing it. glock will make it better.
