Here is my dilema like most students I cant carry on campus. However i carry all the time when legal. SInce I cant take my weapon into class I find my self leaving my lcp or g26 in the glove box. Which bothers me because of theft ,after tax and what not both guns were pricey (for me).So I have been commuting to school unarmed because I dont want anyone to steal my guns, now the school isnt in a high crime area, but murphy's law and all i dont take chances. So I have been contemplating on getting a glove box gun one small enough to carry. I setteled on this snub nose .38 special revolver i think it was from charter arms havent bought it yet. At $200 dollars its about half the price of either of my usual carry. I was all set when I thought is this justifiable purchase?Im not buying because I plan on having it stolen, I just simply dont like being unarmed. Would you guys ever purchase a gun for such reasons?

You can hide a firearm almost anywhere in a vehicle easily. A small semi should hide very easy if you get creative and remember your state laws still come into play. And remember plainsight is most often overlooked.

I keep a handgun in the glove box/console of all (3) my vehicles. S&W Model 36,Taurus Model 80 and a CZ-82. I have had 2 guns stolen from my glove box. A Ruger KP-90 in .45acp and a Rossi SS.357 snubbie. Both were stolen by a co-worker who knew they were there(I couldn't prove it and never got them back). Reliable but inexpensive is the way to go.

I wouldn't keep a gun in my glove box unless I knew I could keep it secure. Does your glove box lock? Is plastic the only think locking it? You may consider a Tuffy box or something like that.

I don't really subscribe to the whole "if they want it they will take it" mentality. To me that means you might as well leave the gun on the seat for someone to steal, because you have given up.

My first gun stolen from my truck was taken from a locked vehicle but unlocked glove box. The second was taken from the same locked truck but this time the glove box was locked. Where you live has a lot to do with how likely it is to be stolen. In the '70s I left my Ruger Blackhawk loaded and on the dash of my car (with the windows rolled down)while I was at work. It was NEVER touched(I only started concealling it after getting chewed out by an Alabama State Trooper). I would NOT do that now though!

I carry my gun in the car/truck not on my person. If I need it I do not want it to be locked in a safe, the same with my HD weapon.

I would much rather put a handgun in a center console storage compartment as you would have to reach clear across the car for the glove compartment, but not all cars have these.

Whatever compartment you store your gun in, I recommend not also storing your registration and insurance documents in the same compartment. It might make for an ... awkward moment if a LEO sees the gun when you open it to retrieve said documents.

I am in the same boat as you. There are small lockable containers that are sold for around $20-$25 that would fit your needs. They have a metal cable that you can run from in the box to under the frame of your seat or where ever you might feel more comfortable. I use this as my glove compartment does not lock and my school is in Detroit. The amount of broken auto glass on the ground makes me leery of keeping anything unsecured or out in the open. The small locking boxes aren't built to really resist too much, but they sure as hell will resist more than a glove compartment could. Also, the BG would have to take the time to break the metal cord or box, which would likely result in enough time for my schools police for to respond. While on that topic, though I don't believe one should ever rely on the police to prevent crime from happening to them, Wayne State in Detroit has some of the best university police around. Those guys respond asap and they have nice ar's too (little bit of gun porn when walking by the squad cars)

I have beach towels on the seats of my truck so I just keep a towel over it. Hidden from plain sight, easy to get to if needed.
A friend keeps his in an old Churches Chicken box. His truck is pretty trashy and the box blends right in.

I would get HiPoint C9s (~$140), lifetime warranty and mine have been reliable. I hope the glove box thing is legal in your location. In my state you can't keep in glove box unless you have a CCW (I do), your expected to keep it on dash or on seat "open carry". Carring a gun on campus here is a no no even in a car in a campus parking lot.

A Hi-Point 9mm or 380, or the CA revolver you have mentioned would be a good option as suggested, but aswell if you have an older car you don't mind modding up a bit, you could beef up security on your glovebox by mounting hardware so it can be locked with a padlock or combination lock while you are in class. When you get back in your car, unlock it and you are good to go.

I would say do both. Buy a cheaper (price wise, not quality) handgun to keep in your car, and also find some way to secure it better when you aren't in the vehicle.

BMV is a common crime, and around college campuses, apartments, and restaurants, the BMV rate is higher. Gloveboxes are targeted by the burglars.

If I really MUST leave a firearm inside a vehicle, it goes into the trunk, with the remote released LOCKED, or a Tuffy Products lockbox.

Get a Sanitary Napkin box from your girlfriend and put the gun in it.

No thug / gangbanger window crasher in the world is ever gonna touch one of those.

But I am of the "no gun left unattended in a car" school.

The crackheads will break a car window to steal your car wash quarters around here.
Be darned if I'm gonna arm them too so they can shoot somebody with my stolen gun!

Based on your location being "Go Bucs", I'm going to assume you're in Florida somewhere.

If that's the case, I'd recommend NOT bringing ANY gun to school, whether in the car or not. In support of my statement, I submit Florida Statute 790.115, subpart 2(a), which says

A person shall not possess any firearm..../SNIP\... at a school-sponsored event or on the property of any school, school bus, or school bus stop; however, a person may carry a firearm...../SNIP\....In a vehicle pursuant to s. 790.25(5); except that school districts may adopt written and published policies that waive the exception in this subparagraph for purposes of student and campus parking privileges

Editing and emphasis is mine and done for clarity.

Paragraph d further states that people with concealed weapons licenses will be exempted from the quoted section.

HOWEVER

99.9999999% of colleges have rules stating that guns are not allowed anywhere on campus at any time for any reason. Reference the bold type in the quote.

MEANING

even if you have a CWL, if the school finds out, at a bare minimum, you'll probably be expelled. I'm not a lawyer, so I can't provide legal advice, however, the school will probably pursue legal action against you as well.

Therefore, my personal advice is to not mix guns and school. I don't, and it leaves a bitter taste in my mouth every day.

Man I don't even lock my house or car doors where I live. You could slip a LPC under the rear floor mat Or clip it up under the dash.

FWIW:

The ashtray in my 1995 Lumina, is a perfect place to conceal a small pistol..

I lined the ashtray (I don't smoke anyway) with the smooth velcro, and my LWS32 just "slides right in" and you close the ashtray, and it's totally hidden.

Easily accessible, totally hidden..

I've never been a fan of trying to hide a firearm between the seats, or in the glove compartment and such, but over the decades I have found that you can hide a reasonably small firearm in a holster with a "snap strap" UNDER the front edge of the drivers seat quite well by simply mounting the holster upside down to the seat frame gun handle facing out.

Depending on the model of the car and the specific seat, you can do the mounting by lying upside down in the floor using the plastic ties found at WalMart/Lowes/etc.

With the holster mounted to the top (of the seat bottom) the firearm is NOT easily visible to the naked eye unless you know it is there. A person just "reaching" or "swiping", or even quickly visually scanning under the seat looking for valuables would never find it.

My favorite choices for underseat "hiding" are my Colt Cobras. There is a small chance that over time dust and such might gather on the hidden firearm, so a revolver is, imo, the best choice. I take the Cobra out periodically and clean it, and make sure it's working ok, then put it back.

I should think any quality small revolver, (D frame Colt/J frame Smith) would be good choices, and over time I've had good luck with the old original Charter Arms Undercovers. The Undercovers are cheaper than the others, but still, in my experience, very reliable..

I think a holster with a strap and snap retains the concealed firearm choice better than just a snug fit custom holster.

If you have a Seecamp or other small pistol, you can use a similar holster and that will work too. (See photo below).

Just a suggestion as how to hide your firearm in your vehicle, but this method as worked for me for decades.

Best Wishes,

I wouldn't worry about the theft issue. Don't leave any radar detectors or Garmins out in plain sight and you'll be fine. Every car I owned has had break into me written all over it and I never had a problem.

What school are you at in Tampa? UT and USF are both in not the best neighborhoods. I went to UT and always had my gun in the car. I may remember carrying to night classes but my memory is fuzzy on the subject.

Its tampa. The local leo's say its ok in the car. I didnt see a no gun in car policy. I really like the bolt lock box to frame idea though.
