I just purchased my first 22, a Henry Arms .22LR/Short, and I was wondering what brand of .22 long this gun works well with. I found a deal on a brick of Federal .22LR champion target 36 and 40 grain, and a so-so deal on brick of CCI mini mag 36g high velocity and aguila 36grain.

I'm really looking forward to shooting it! Thanks

You'll probably have to find that out for yourself. All firearms, especially rimfires, tend to favor a certain load and due to slight variations in manufacturing tolerances no two are alike. Just try any brands you can find and see what works beat in your rifle.

One tip though, Remington Golden-Bullet bulk packs should be avoided. That ammo has a pretty bad track record for quality control. Other Remington loads (Thunderbolt, Yellow jacket, Viper) should be ok.

I've used CCI, Remington, and Winchester super X. They all worked well enough I suppose. The big box of super X I bought has had a few flawed ones so that might be something to look out for if you should try it. Everything I've used so far has been accurate enough for my needs. CCI has probably been the best quality stuff I've gotten so far but the super X is what I've been using for a while.

Edit: After reading the post below I should also mention I haven't had a misfire that I can recall with any of them. The "flaws" that I'm talking about with the Winchester stuff are dented bullets and the likes

I picked up a henry frontier rifle for my son's 10th b-day a couple months ago. He was given 5 100rnd boxes of the golden bullets from his uncle. After shooting through 4 boxes so far not one misfire yet. I really could not tell you for sure on grouping because the kids shoot it. I have probably only fired 5-6 rounds out of it but always hit my target.

here are your 22 ammo best bets, for all 22's;
anything- cci, feddy, winny , aguila, golden eagle, eley, (last 3 all eley products), wolf, american eagle red box(made by Feddy).
each of the above make several diff kinds of ammo types, so you have many
to test through.
Yes there are many other 22 ammo's out there; Dynamit, RWS, armscor, Fiocchi, etc., but if you can't find one, from the above list, and they are all very common , and inexpensive, and everyone carries them, then you got a real problem!!!!
Avoid cci bulk boxes, use any winny or feddy bulk boxes.
Avoid all remington ammo, as if it were going to give you the swine flu!
Remmy ammo is so bad , so stinky, so dirty, so poorly crimped, powder is measured with plastic spoons, and poured by blind salamanders, etc.,
it is just best to avoid remmy 22 ammo.
It's too bad really, they make some fine centerfire ammo...

I think its best to avoid all remmy ammo. I would not shoot core-loks out of any of my rifles if you bought them for me. However though not my favorite the golden bullets my brother bought for my son have shot well. I personally use CCI as a prefrence.

Start with a box of CCI Mini-Mags. All of my .22s love 'em.

And I guess I've been lucky, but Remington Golden Bullets are the best "cheap" .22 LR ammo I've found for my guns. YMMV.

Thanks for the info. I ordered a few boxes of federal, cci, aguila, and wolf to give a try.

I really don't want swine flu. I wasn't aware it could be transferred by low grade ammo, so I will stay away from it :)

As stated above all .22s have different ammo preferences.

I even have an old Marlin model 60 that preferences Remington golden bullets.

I have to clean it frequently...........it's the dirtiest .22 ammo made.
