I'm looking for a cheap but decent bolt action rifle that isnt the famous cheap mosin nagant.

I would like a rifle under $250.
Can I get anything for that?

Sometimes the Vz24 or M-48 Mausers still go for less than that, or did not that long ago. (Think I paid $139.)

Or you could check your local big box store circular -- some of the Stevens or Marlin low-end bolt-action rifles might hit the sales at around $250 sometimes.

Sure used to be lots below that price range. These days its tougher to find stuff that cheap.

Personally, what I'd do is plan a day to hit every gun shop in driving distance -- maybe 10-15 of them, say, with the intent of scouring their used racks. There are still TONS of old deer rifles from the good old days which will shoot just fine (not "Sub-MOA Guaranteed or We'll Wash Your Truck for a Year," but plenty accurate) which are collecting dust on dealers' shelves 'cause they aren't the latest and greatest thing in .338 SuperUltraMagnum. Dont' expect to find a vintage Model 70 for that money, but a sporterized Enfield, Mauser, or Springfield maybe. Maybe an old Savage. If you aren't looking for something specific, there are lots of great old guns that need homes.

the mossberg atr can be had at wallmart for 249.00. a savage axis 267.00. like the one poster said a used stevens good be had for 250.00

I have seen used Savage 110's in pretty good condition for just under $300. I don't need a deer rifle right now, but if I had I'd have bought one of them!

If you can save another $50, yes. That is less than 1 tank of gas. If your budget is too tight to come up with that little difference, how you gonna afford ammo.

So 300ish for a savage rifle?

I'll go look around I just want a paper puncher

Yep, something like that. I've seen a couple 30 '06 Savages in that range. If you're in the centralish part of PA I can probably even direct to you one at a local store right now.

Yes, the stevens 200 parts are compatible with the NON accutrigger savage 10. Same barrel nut, same threading on the barrel, same recoil lug, literally the same freaking action as the savage 10 non acutrigger. If I had the money, I'd do a bench gun in it just for kicks... still will run 1k to do since a good barrel aint cheap. An after market trigger is readily available. So are stocks (there are 2 or 3 configurations though so make sure you know which one you will need). R.W.Dale built a .3 moa 7.62x39 stevens 200 based gun. He put in a SSS recoil lug, a choate stock with bedding block, new barrel, and new trigger. You can find details here, as well as a couple of other places under the name Krochus on the net with pics, etc.

stevens, marlin xl7, handi rifle,

cdnn has:

smith i-bolt for 300
howa 1500 for $350
thompson icon for 400

the modern rifles are going to run you a little more up front, but they're already tapped for a scope, ammo is plentiful, they have warranties and better triggers.

Visit a couple of local gun stores (gun shops, pawn shops, etc).
I've seen a couple of sporterized Mausers for ~$250-$300 around here.

The Savage Axis is one heck of a gun for the money ( if you are dead set on a new rifle) also I saw some surplus Steyr M95's on JG sale for like 179.00

I am actually currently looking for a US made mosin nagant from remington or westinghouse.

If I can find one of these puppies I gotta snatch it up!

If you like classic Mausers, SAMCO's prices ranged from about $180-$230, just one minute ago.

Lots of buyers recently complained about the time for an order to get processed, but have been pleasantly surprised with the quality of many of the Yugo 24/47s.

Does your preferred price exclude shipping and FFL costs?

Purchased one that I returned to the dealer because of a bad barrel. I traded and paid a little more for a better yugo 24/27 and it is a good rifle needs to be glass bedded and shot more. In in the sentiment of the old Zula proverb this weapon needs to be fed and to eat.

American made Mosin Nagants get a premium today. ~$300-$400 ranging on condition and where its been (Soviet Union or Finland).
