I've been doing some checking on shops in MS, but with few exceptions I seem to be finding small, one-man stores with little inventory.

Do any MS THR members have shops they'd recommend as being "quality?"

where in ms.

i live in lucedale we have a few nice ones ones here but they are small. thats the way i like it. we are on first name basis and all friends and neighbors, if i want something they dont have couple days the order comes in and voila its here, and for a coupla bucks over cost why not?

gunshops in Miss.

Im not sure where you are located, but there is a Guns and Ammo shop in Southhaven, Miss. Southhaven is about a half hour away from Memphis.

Some places near Jackson

I really like Discount hunting and fishing, though they don't have any of the cool guns or HDR's in stock usually they can get them and fairly competitively priced, I really like them, aand a good selection of pistols. Also Surplus City is ok, and very big.

Don't forget the "Big Gunshow" I can get the date and local if you want.

Tupelo boy here. The best ones I know of in the area are not in the are. Memphis has several, but its a 1.5 hour drive.
yes, my location is NW AR, but I spend more time in Tupelo than an Irishman in a bar.

For a sporting goods store, Big Buck Sports in Hattiesburg, has a pretty fair collection, but no used guns. The only stores I've seen with more guns are San Francisco Gun Exchange (defunct now), Martin Retting in the Los Angeles area, and Bass Pro's main store in Springfield, Missouri. (That's not to say there aren't a lot of bigger stores out there, I just haven't seen a lot of stores; but those are pretty well known.) Service is good and quite friendly, so far as I've seen knowledgeable (and accurate). Their prices seem just a hair high to me, but I'm cheep and mainly buy over the 'net. FFL transfers are $20.

Well you have several good gunshops in central MS. I live right outside of Jackson. The two I use the most are Lakeland Discount Hunting and Fishing in Brandon, MS. They have good inventory and good prices and will get you what ever you want. Then there is Surplus City in Clinton, MS which has a good inventory but the prices are a tad higher than Discount Hunting but again they can get you whatever you want and they have an indoor range also. Then there's a couple I've been in but never bought anything. Mean Mallard in Jackson, MS seems to have more rifles and shotguns than handguns and there are several more around the area. If need be I can look up gunstores in the phonebook for ya.

Thanks for the replies. I've talked to Big Bucks Sporting Goods, and they're now listed on my site. Guns and Ammo said they'd think about it. I wasn't aware of Lakeland, though. Mean Mallard is on my callback list.

I always felt that Meanmallard was a bit high. Am I wrong?
I'm also supprised to see so many Ms THR members, anyone shoot IPSC or Highpower (I do IPSC)?

Yeah I think they are a tad on the high side which is why I've only been there a couple of times. Which part of MS are you from mcooper?

I'm from Jackson, now I'm at Starkville attending MSU.

I compete IPSC, and I'm going to start IDPA ASAP since there is apparantly a group that does it here (in starkville).

Highpower will have to wait, I'm not the best rifle shot (300yds 80-90% torso hits with M1A off of bench). I need practice and more instruction here.

I'm also in Kosiciusko a bit (I think I spell it wrong though)

My major is undeclared, but right now I'm looking at chemical engineering, though I may go law or something else (I guess that's why I'm undeclared).

Well if they are pro-gun, let me know, I'm looking to start a pro-gun campus organizaton, maybe.

Small world it is. One of best friends just graduated from state this spring in mechanical engineering and works at Tri-State brick now. Of course I know other people that attend MSU. I live in Brandon right outside of Jackson and really need to get out and try some IPSC.

I live in Hattiesburg. I have obtained a few new guns from Big Buck Sports, but I also have acquired some fairly good deals on used guns at a couple of local pawn shops.

I live in Clinton and shoot at the Surplus City range a bit and they tend to have a good selection to look at. Discount on Lakeland and Van's in Pearl tend to have the best selection but high prices, esp. Van's.

I've had the best experiences at Great Southern in Pearl, even though their selection is spotty at best, they will order you just about anything you want, are good about doing transfers, and offer the best prices that I've found.
Good luck,

IDPA in Starkville, huh? Anybody else got IDPA in MS? I've only found IPSC locally, oh, and the weekly matches at Surplus City.

Hands Down...Van's Deer Processing

Monkeyleg,

I live in the Jackson area (Byram) and have been to Surplus City and have purchased some guns from Discount Hunting and Fishing but, by far, prefer Van's Deer Processing in Brandon (they are officially in Brandon not Pearl). They easily have the largest inventory and variety and I usually am able to spend from $25 to $50 less when purchasing handguns from them. They have always treated me fairly on trades. I know Van and his brother-in-law Johnny, as well as, Ken, Chris (Johnny's son), and Brad after having done a good bit of business with them. They can get you about anything you want if they don't have it in stock. They have almost completed a huge expansion to their store so there's no telling what their inventory will grow to now? Their phone number is 601-825-9087. Don't be surprised if they initially put you on hold when you call. They stay very busy, especially with the store expansion going on. The best thing to do is to just go in and see what they have.

I really like Todd at Discount Hunting and Fishing and he has always been good to me. However, he doesn't make the final decisions where trades are concerned and have to admit to having been taken advantage of on one occasion. That was, ultimately, my responsibility but still don't appreciate the attitude of one person there (I won't give his name) who made the final decision on what he would give me on a trade. As a result, I've sort of decided to restrict my gun purchases there for now. Also, their inventory appears to be dwindling more and more after each visit. However, I would recommend you go in and meet Todd and maybe establish a good relationship with him. He can get you whatever you want.

Surplus city has a fair number of guns in their inventory but they lost my business the first time I went there. Their attitude (collectively) had a lot to be desired and I could not get anyone to take an interest in me as a potential buyer. They have an indoor range, as well, and lo and behold was their sign which specifically forbade any CCW holders from carrying in their store or to the range. Only police are allowed in with their weapons. Also, they clearly showed a bias toward the police whenever one walked into the range or store. Never showed a bit of interest when I walked in. Never smiled or greeted me or asked if they could help me (I was peering through their glass case for 15 mins.).

No sour grapes. Just the facts as I saw them.

Hope that helps?

Greg

I've shot IPSC there before and am A member of that range, If I don't sleep through my alarms this time Intend to be at the IPSC match this coming Sunday.

It's a fairly nice range too.

If any of you know the owners of Guns and Ammo or Discount Hunting and Fishing, and know them well, please PM me. I have a small favor to ask.

Thanks.
