Any recommendations?

What I'd like- one powder that produces little SD in velocity and will make major in both 180gr 40 and 200gr 45ACP and doesn't smoke a ton with moly bullets. I think a good answer is VVN320, and I'd pay for it, but I can never get my hands on it so I'd like to limit it to common easy to find stuff.

My history so far-

Win231- still have some, couldn't get anything near consistent loads. FPS would increase as I shot, EVERYTIME. I could load 100 rounds and then randomly pick 8. The FPS would increase as I shot. I blamed it on too much case volume and position sensitivity.

Haven't tried in 40 yet, don't really want to bother because I'd like to use 1 powder only.

Titegroup- consistent. Temp sensitive. I just shot a match and did not make major due to temp variation between my testing and theirs. I will add .1 gr and live with it, but it's annoying. Also a little smokey with 200gr moly bullets, probably even more with the 40's from what I have seen. Gun gets HOT.

So far I am looking at WST and Solo 1000. Anyone know if Solo is temp sensitive? I believe WST is inverse temp sensitive which scares me because I live in Minnesota. I emailed Accurate with some questions about solo but I won't hear from them for awhile. Any suggestions?

Titegroup= too hot for moly. Yea, it will work, but there are better options. Smoky right?

Try AA #2 here. It will work in both.

American Select is another good option. (powders with little or no nitro= good for moly)

Solo 1000 is an excellent powder. it works just dandy in .45, but have never used it in .40. It is real clean burning at low pressures.

N320 will do what you want if you can find it.

Thanks for the reply. Are AA#2, American select and N320 temp sensitive? Is there a good site that explains the drawbacks to powders?

I am getting a little sick of experimenting, or buying powder and later having someone tell me, oh yeah that one's real temp sensitive etc...

It looks like powder valley has N320 in stock. I may have to look into some kind of group buy.

IIRC AA#2 and VV320 are a little hot (fast) for the 40. I think AA#5 and VV 340 are a little slower and more in the recommended speed range for the 40 S&W. I can tell you that Power Pistol shoots good but does not burn completely in the 40 and smokes a little too much, that is unless you like the cool James Bond effect.

WSF is a good choice in the medium burning powder range. It is a bit more efficient than AA #5.

N340 gives to much recoil for the velocity in .45.

I really like Universal Clays in the .40 and it works pretty well in the .45.

AA #2 & N320 will push the .45 as hard as he needs. I believe it will do the same for the .40. Major, just not screamer loads.

Unique. 5.2gr in the .40S&W, 6.0gr in the .45ACP. Its amazingly clean in the .40S&W, on the dirty side in .45ACP but is a "sooty" dirt that comes off with little effort.

On the safety side, a double charge will overflow the case leaving no place to put the bullet shoud you fail to notice the powder falling on the floor :)
