Hello folks,

I read here almost every day, but rarely post. I do need to get some info specific to me though this time.

Given the climate of things recently, my wife and I are even more motivated to move out of NJ. I'd like to get some suggestions of states that are friendly toward RKBA and homeschooling. Would be nice to find someplace with a reasonable cost of living and some open spaces - hopeful that we could own a piece of!

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Maine is Friendly to both, but I would recommend NH as salthouse did... nice seasonal weather, easy access to Boston, New York and Maine as well as a friendly state to shooters and hunters.

NOTE: Land prices is rural parts of NH and ME are pretty low for the North East.

I'd say
Vermont
New Hampshire (free staters)
Montana
Alaska
New Mexico

Maybes (could use some conservatives to offset the California influence)

Colorado
Arizona
Wyoming (free staters)
Tejas

Those are in no particular order

Just down the road and across the western border, PA, just don't act like a City folk and you would blend right in.
PA is just like the US in miniature, libs on the left and right and a few in the south central and conservatives in the middle.

Alas, I also have to recommend kansas:p Although my wife and I are considering Arizona for a change of scenery... my wife and I were both homeschooled and we both have siblings who are still being homeschooled. It is nearly painless to homeschool your children in Kansas (well...I wouldnt' say homeschooling is painless lol) but all you have to do is register your homeschool as a private school with the state. No updates, check-ups, etc.

We have CCH and it requires a 8 hour class + $150 fee, fingerprinting, and 60 day waiting period after applying. Kansans are fairly active in the RKBA movement.

I'll vote for PA -- as our RKBA situation is pretty outstanding and my wife and I are homeschooling our kids.

PA isn't the absolute best state for HS, mostly due to still having some state control or oversight, but the issues are easily worked around/through. In practice, we've had no problems at all.

And, did I mention the outstanding RKBA environment?

Close, too.

Virginia.

RKBA: VA is pretty good for rkba. Open carry is allowed without a permit; a concealed handgun permit (CHP) is relatively easy and inexpensive to get. Face to face transfers are allowed w/o going through an FFL. No waiting period for buying a gun, but you are limited to 1 gun per month unless you have a CHP.

All of the above rules apply all over the state, but Northern Virginia is crowded, full of liberal yuppie imports, and the prevailing attitude (but not the law) is pretty gun hostile. I live in No Va. I love it, even while disliking what it has become.

HOMESCHOOLING: I don't know the homeschooling situation personally. All I know is that there are a lot of folks who do homeschool, so I assume the rules and regs are reasonable.

Doesn't sound real RKBA friendly as far as the CCH goes....while the 8 hour class is probably a good thing, the rest sucks. PA's is a $28.00 fee (varies between counties, I think), 2 references, and usually takes about 2 weeks. Some are quicker. No fingerprints.
Many years ago I moved from Susquehanna county where the wife and I both had permits, to Bradford county. The county sheriff wanted fingerprints with the application, and I objected. Susquehanna didn't need them, so as far as I was concerned, Bradford didn't either. The authorities have enough copies anyway, (military and civilian security clearances, etc).

Or perhaps the $150 covers the cost of the 8 hr class?

Do what we are doing and move to Wyoming. For your two criteria, it is hard to beat.

WHAT?? you're moving to wy, kentucky??? dude!

don't get me wrong... i love WY too. but my daughter's been homeschooled in TN for the past 6 years, and the only two bad gun laws are just about to be fixed. plus, no state income tax

After looking at the HSLDA, I don't think any other state can beat Idaho.

They have absolutely no home schooling regulations, open carry, cheap shall-issue concealed carry, and plenty of wide open spaces.

The only factor is if you can find a job there. I'm going to be looking at moving to Idaho in a few years provided I can find a security / law enforcement job somewhere.

I know, I know, I am probably 6 types of crazy. Cold winters, strong winds, but the wide open spaces really appeal to me.

TN does have pretty good homeschool laws, my wife was homeschooled here (I was just across the state line in KY.) Wyoming doesnt have a state income tax either, and sales tax is 6% vs 9.75% here. Have two job offers to choose from right now, we are probably gonna know exactly where we will land by the weekend.

I do wish that I would have been able to come out and shoot with ya'll more. I have a feeling I would have been able to learn a LOT about long range shooting from you...

thanks for the input

we have HS friends in NH and visit them often. Many times have thought about moving up there. We keep thinking though that getting off the east coast is important for many reasons.

Believe it or not, NJ is about the top of the list for HS... no oversight, no registration as a private school. No inspections. The law just requires that we provide an 'equivalent education' that they would get in public schools. Well duh, that's not much of a standard, now is it?

on the 2A stuff, it is almost impossible to carry. NJ maintains a list of its own assualt weapons criteria. Any AR type rifle has to have a fixed butt stock and pinned comp, or plain barrel w/ no threads.

We are members of HSLDA and I have done some research on the various lists. I was looking for some 'personal' recommendations....

Kentucky, that is some sales tax! Ky was one of the candidate states. So is Tenn. and Montana. Jobs are certainly an issue too.

I was looking for the HS and 2A criteria, and, less populated, maybe a Red state, warmer climate (in case of civil unrest and the utilities go out, it would be nice not to have to worry about heat in -20 winters!), affordable land - timber, crops, hunting or ranching, water and maybe some solar.

Basically, I just want it all. This is Amerika. is that too much to ask? :)

As others have said move across the Delaware. Getting a LTCF. is easy. You can carry in Bars and banks etc. If you are driving by a gun shop and get a jones to buy a pistol you can be in and out in about 40 minutes.

You can also ride a motorcycle with out a lid. House prices are lower then Jersey too. I made the move 6 years ago and am very happy.

My game plan is to move to KY when the wife gets out of college..
Rated bottom of the list by the brady gun ban bunch..

I would recommend Arizona, but you might have trouble finding employment in some areas.

Education: There is a lot of home schooling in rural areas, but in Arizona we also have a strong and growing Charter School system. Charter Schools are private, not public, with less red tape and more parent imput. They don't operate with a government style budget, but they do get the same funding per student from the state that usually goes to public schools. More choice and the way funds are being distributed has really shook up the public systems, and as a general rule, Charter School and home school students do better on test scores

RTKBA: Arizona is great. Even out-of-state visitors can get concealed weapons permits, and if you want you can own a machine gun. We are very proud of our -F score from the Brady Bunch.

I would suggest making a list first and defining what is important to you and your family - aside from RKBA and home schooling. Then work through the previous suggestions to see what's the best match.

I'm from WV, so obviously I'm biased toward the "Mountain State". :)

I can tell you that the homeschooling movement is very organized and large here. It's legal to OC, and CC is easy to obtain. Private gun sales between individuals is just that - PRIVATE.

If you're an outdoors person, WV has plenty of 4 season activities, from world class white water rafting, to some of the nation's best mountain biking. Of course there's an abundance of the usual...hiking, camping, skiing, fishing, boating, golf, etc.

Like I said, evaluate your priorities, visit some different prospects if possible, and the right state is going to be the one that "feels" like home.

Good Luck!
