I bought a model 10-5 snub a couple of weeks ago and I love it. I was on a football site I frequent a couple of weeks ago and a retired NYPD officer offered to sell me his old model 10-8 duty weapon for $75 bucks. I jumped on that. He said he carried it for 10 years when he first went to work with NYPD until they transitioned to the Glock. Unfortunately the dealer he took it to for transfer was a shmuck and he charged him approximately $125 to transfer and ship it to my FFL. He would only ship UPS overnight and he decided he would make a chunk on the transfer. He offered the guy I was buying it from $200 for the gun when he was trying to get him to transfer the gun and the guy told him he had already sold it to me and that he just wanted it to go to another law enforcement officer, so I guess the shmuck decided to make his money the old fashioned way, just steal it. Anyway by the time I got it transferred and paid my dealer $25 bucks for the transfer down here I had $225 in the gun. I bought a pair of Smith wood grips for it for another $25 so I still think I got a pretty good deal on the gun. I cleaned it up and aside from a small amount of holster wear in the usual spots it's in good shape. Shoots good too.

Thanks for sharing. Having first been weened on autoloaders in the 80's and 90's, as I round the corner into my 40's, the only things out there now that really peak my interest are revolvers, with the older S&Ws leading the way. :)

A guy can't have too many...

That's great !......I have a 5" M&P (1948),a 10-1,10-5,and a 10-7 2". I'm always looking for more. ;)

just something about model 10's that make me feel nestolgic.....and they are wonderfull shooters and a joy to look at and fondle ;)

nice one :)

Nice looking gun! While you were throughly reamed on the transfer, the overall price is still not bad for such a nice gun!

IMO there are a few revolvers you just must own if you consider yourself a "revolver guy" and the M10 is definitely one of them. You made a good find on that revolver for sure... Thanks for sharing the pictures!

I'm thinking the dealer was so nice to you maybe someone from BATF should visit him and do an audit. I'm sure he wouldn't mind them checking all his inventory for a week or so, but only because he is such a nice guy..
(not that anyone would do something like that to such a nice person ;) )

On the upside of the transaction, I would like to point out there's a lesson to be learned here if you do distant transactions much:

1) Unless the seller has a cheap transfer agent he knows at hand, YOU find the transfer agent. GB and AA keep lists, and asking for recommendations on state and regional gun forum boards is even better.

2) Call around, find someone who is going to be fair - $20/$25 for the transfer and $20 for the USPS flat-rate box shipping.

3) You pay them directly with your credit card.

I've used this pattern successfully a number of times to avoid the pit you got dragged into - it's a shame he went to a jerk.

All that said - nice gun, and you were still OK on the price when all was said and done. These are, like said above, almost "must have" guns for a real revolver fan. I don't think any production revolver, on average, shoots more pleasantly than an S&W 10.

Next time you get the urge for another one, see if you can find a pre-1948 one with the "long action" trigger. Even more pleasant to shoot I think.

Agree with you all.

I started with handguns with a Single-six and then went on about a twenty year auto binge. When I turned 40 revolvers became important again. I have a soft spot for Model 10's, Ruger Six series and anything with a snub-nose and my Blackhawk .45 is hands down the finest gun I own. I really love the wheel guns. Blue steel and sex appeal.

Is there a state law requiring an FFL to send the gun? Federal law allows an individual to ship a gun to the transfer dealer in another state directly.

Nice revolver. Even though the total cost was about $250 I believe you got a good deal considering what they are going for now. As stated earlier the Model 10 is one revolver anyone who is serious about guns should have in their collection.

about 40 as well when I fell back in love with wheelguns(I started with them), not that I dont love my semis but I have gone S&W nuts in the few years....and never looked back, just when I think there cant be another one I want.....another turns up and follows me home :)

That's a nice lookin' 10-8, and you got it for a good price, even with all the add-on charges.

funny how someone with benefits paid by tax dollars declare another making a legit profit as a rip off artist.... gee 120 minus about 50.00 usps overnight for a pistol an 70.00 for a transfer/pack and ship. While not cheap I don't think its a rip off. NY costs are higher than most etc. Insurance ffl fees etc property taxes etc but then again what would a civil servant with some of the best benifits know about actually paying for those things. They just gripe when others charge so they can have benefits too...

btw your paying so little was ok even though you know it was too little- afterall the poor retiree on the fixed income knew what he was doing-

yer just a whiner

tallpaul,
The max allowable transfer fees charges used to be $25. Several years ago the BATF raised the Max allowable transfer fee charges to $50. Since he charged him $125 I would think $75 (not $70 like you posted) is slightly over $50. That's assuming it was really $50 to ship, last time I checked it was closer to $40. IMO they dealer went to the Max and then-some and probably because he wanted the revolver and couldn't get it. Of course that's only my opinion and you have a right to yours just as I do.

SO your saying that since someone has a good benefits package with his profession its ok for a ffl to screw him over because he couldnt buy it first?

Also whats wrong with friends on a website selling things for under market value?
I bought this from a friend for 60 bucks and it was only a couple months old.

Did I rip him off... NO! He gave me a deal because we are friends in an online forum. I dont know the guy other than what he says online and from when we occasionally meet at club events.

I do like how you go on about his not paying for his great benefits (which by the way, I have to figure out what dept he works for because I still pay for mine) and then call him a whiner.

Mr. Tellpaul

Yeah I am a civil servant and yeah I have pretty good benefits, they could be better and should be better but they are better than most in the private sector except for the rich who own the private sector. I am not a whiner I just don't like for people to take advantage of my hard earned dollars. I suspect that your a one issue voter and probably on the wrong side of the health care issue, that you don't believe in labor unions or peoples right to negotiate a fair wage and by fair wage I mean a wage that is per capita not 400 to 1 CEO to employee. I got taken a little on the deal but came out ok. I suspect you have been taken all your life by your own ignorance and will continue to do so...so I believe in the long run I am a lot better off than you. Some of us sell brains, some of us sell sweat...it's not my problem your short on brains.

And another thing

tallpaul,

I had a little trouble understanding the last part of your post as it was so poorly written. So I will answer that. I told the guy when he wanted to sell me the gun for $75 that it was worth at least $250 in it's condition. He stated that he knew that but that he wanted to sell it to a law enforcement officer and a Jets fan so that was his choice. I would have gladly given the money to him, I just did not want to give it to his Schiester dealer.

The problem is that the Seller is in an area where guns = mud. It costs a fortune for the FFL's there to be in business and more to stay in business so they are basically forced to act this way by a useless system. Welcome to Government regulation and oversight.

I don't understand those charges, because in Texas there is plenty of choice and latitude on these issues. Not so in NYC and surrounding areas.

marano35 - This is The High Road... That name isn't an accident. Let's refrain from personal attacks and keep OT comments off the board.

Tellpaul's comments could have been taken a lot of ways... Our mods have thousands of comments to read per day + trolls and spammers to keep off the board. Let's not make life harder on them.

Good buy on the model 10... I never find deals like that. Xavierbreath also seems to have good luck picking up things at pawn shops. I guess some people have the gift.

marano35, wrong side of the health care issue? Show me where in the constitution that heath care was a right?

AS far as max allowable transfer fee-= BS they can tell ya a minimum but other feess can be added such as a handling fee etc... no one has the right to tell me what I can charge maximum for my services- the market can but if I don't like someones prices I go elsewhere instead of whining about it...

Your right.

Tallpaul is right. I would suggest that nobody ever consider doing business with a place called Benson's gun shop in the State of New York.

I wanted to purchase that exact model gun at a store here. They wnted 400$ with the original S&W holster. I should have purchased a handfull of these when they were like 150! I WISH I could find one for 250$ arround here anymore in good condition.
