The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is asking the White House budget office to approve an emergency request that would require dealers to report sales of two or more high-powered rifles to the same customer within a five-day period

Meaning; the targets (whatever the "group" is they hope to "thwart") will simply buy their "two or more" every SIX days instead of five or less. Net result? ZERO. Net effect? ZERO.

So who are the real targets of this?

No, the ATF are not that stupid; they have someones in mind here. And why? What is coming down the pipe that many hitherto unarmed Americans might suddenly decide to rush out and buy rifles for their family and friends by the twos and threes?

The weapons are favorites of Mexican drug cartels

Are there any weapons not "favorites" of Mexican drug cartels? Rifles? Handguns? Machineguns? Grenades? Knives? Bombs? Machetes? What isn't?

What is the favorite cologne of Mexican drug cartels? Is it Armani? Halston?

What about sneakers? Which ones speed the way of the evil feet to the death of innocents?!!

Where do Mexican drug cartels buy their groceries?

What is their favorite car?

Toothbrush?

The ATF must be a favorite of mexican drug cartels; they haven't even made a small dent in the trillion dollar drug trade.

But everyone likes a big show.

Even multiple sales of a 22 handguns within 5-days require a FFL dealer to complete and submit the multiple transfer/purchase form.

Its pretty easy to circumvent this, just make you're two purchases 7 days apart

Or you buy from different dealers.... which I consider the great flaw in the multiple handgun reporting form from a "gun control" point of view and renders the whole practice useless. Certainly the NICs check could be utilized, but that would require retention of the records for 5-days.

Around 95% of all law in this country is made by unelected, unaccountable government agencies in the form of "regulations," rather than by our elected representatives. This is just one example among thousands of these regulations that are promulgated every year. And to think some people still believe we live in a Republic! The USA is predominantly an administrative state. However, our elected reps do have the power to take the authority away from administrative agencies... but it never happens.

I am of the belief that just about all of these so-called regulations are an illegitimate exercise of authority and do not deserve to be obeyed.

I completely agree that no one has a responsibility to follow laws written up by the same branch of government that will be enforcing them. This is a blatant violation of the separation of powers.

Big crimes are happening SOB because both countries thirst for illegal drugs. Maybe we should accomodate a little. Look who goes into a gun store to purchase 10 AR's at a time? Most people wouldn't except crimminals.

I'd hate for Texas to become one of these states with one firearm purchase a month with a two week waiting period.

The definition includes such cartel favorites as the Remington 740 and Browning BAR that come in calibers larger than .22, are semi-automatic and have magazines. It would also cover the Ruger Mini 30, but not the Mini 14 unless the rule includes .223, which is technically larger than .22 caliber.

Please also note the BATFE has asked for OMB approval prior to the seating of the 112th Congress. Congress can, if it wishes, override the proposed rule but it's worth remembering the Republicans control only the House of Representatives and they are 43 votes short of a veto-proof majority even in the House.
