Emu in carbondale a few months ago and now emu in granite city. I never understood the need for a car rifle but with this recent outbreak of southern illinois bird attack... :D

After Lawdog's experience with Emus, I don't blame the cops for shooting first...

Dunno why they didn't find a guy on a horse to just rope the emu...? :D

Neither do I know what emu meat tastes like, but I've tried ostrich and didn't like it. Nor would I want to raise them - I would think the smell of burning feathers when you brand them would be awful :p

Here in middle Tennessee; the emu market busted, the slaughter plant
went belly up; and the owners of the now worthless birds often loaded
them into trailers and drove out somewhere and turned them loose.
These birds could make a living in the wild; at least in the warm months.
Catching one of them is impossible; also they can kick your head off.
So we are used to seeing them running down the roads. Best to shoot them
and leave them lay; as the meat stinks.

Did adding lead to bird-meat qualify as making an emu-lsion?

I've always hoped to see one of this things while deer hunting. Same in Arkansas they got released and are out there just waiting to kick your head off. Watch out.

I'm with Jeff50 where are the details??

--officers shot and killed the emu --

What caliber, how many rounds? Was it a one shot stop? Head shot maybe?

Did it run around like a chicken with its head cut off (the old dead chicken EMU-lation)??

    Rheas

Used to live in South America and the landlord had a rhea (In the same class as the ostrich and emu.) that had the run of the place. He had a thing for my wife's green swimming suit but other wise made no trouble. We just had to look both ways for rhea traffic before crossing to the pool.

I am not sure about the emu's ability to kick, never seen them do it, but they can sure scratch real well.

The meat actually is a bit like beef with a slight nutty taste in my opinion.

Every recipe that you will see for emu meat will generally contain the phrase "simmer for three hours". If you do not do this, it is a lot like eating rubber bands.
