So I have a Security Six that I bought inexpensively a while back because it has a few very nasty rusted spots.

So I'm thinking of using it as a project gun. No serious mods or anything. Just refinish, melt job, recrown, trigger job, subtle things.

I want new grips for her. I hated the way the Hogues and pachmayr rubber grips felt on the gun.

I see that I can get Sile grips pretty for pretty cheap (around $15-20 delivered from CDNN) and I can get NOS Jay Scott grips on eBay for about $30ish.

Any commentary about how well either of these grips would fit on the gun? I just want to be sure I won't get something all warped up, uneven, etc...

I've seen........

.......parts kits on Gunbroker. Everything but the frame, barrel and grips. There's also a guy on there that goes buy the moniker of mets2redsox0 that has a lot of grips for the old Sixes. You can get grips and a parts kit for under $100.

I had two sets of the Siles from CDNN. The finger groove didn't feel right to me. like my fingers were cramped in the grooves. But I like the regular target ones.

I have big hands and I felt the same way. I still think I have them in my box of "extra" gun stuff. 19-3Ben, if you want to try them out for yourself I will make you a VERY good deal. PM me.

Ruger has some oversized replacement grips for the Security Six on shopruger.com for $20. Click on "attic treasures". They are the RLG model, made of walnut. There are 2 stock #s, but only the packaging seems to be the only difference. I recieved them last for mine. They look and feel good. Much better than the factory ones. I'll post pics when I get home.

Thank you, texagun. I'm new to posting on forums an couldn't get my iPhone to post the link. Those are some beauties in that pic!

Ruger Grips

I just bought a pair of these grips from Ruger for my S. S. They are perfect for this gun.

Does anyone know of a similar grip that would fit the Ruger Redhawk guns? If I could get this same grip for my Redhawk I think it would be an improvement over the original factory grips.

Ditto on mets2redsox0 for older grips. I bought a pair of Speed Six grips and a set of Victory grips, and they were both exactly as described and perfect for a project.

Just buy some oversized, cheap wood grips like Sile or Jay Scott, etc, and sand down and shape to your satisfaction. If they are loose on the frame, use acraglas, or even some cheap plastic wood, or some other solidifying "bondo", etc, to fill te slight gaps causing the misfit. You won't see it on the outside, and if you take care in shaping and finishing the outside, they'll look just fine.

PS, you might even be able to use bondo in filling the pits, and then use a bake on gun paint/finish to give the gun a nice exterior finish.

Marc Morganti at Gemini Customs (www.geminicustoms.com) specializes in Ruger revolvers. Send him some pics and ask his advice. He might even be willing to take it on as a custom project on the cheap, but if not, he'd certainly be able to point you in the right direction to do things yourself.

Ruger never made a "target grip" for the RH. Eagle offers grips for RH's. ( http://www.eaglegrips.com/guns/Ruger-Redhawk-Series.html ). There is not a picture of a target grip on the RH but on one of the Ruger Forums some time back there was posted a pic of a RH with Eagle grips and trigger shoe as I recall. Also, Herrett's offers a number of grips for the RH one of which might be what you are looking for such as the Roper.

RugRev -

Thanks for the heads up on the RH grips. I looked them over but as you say, Eagle does not have pictures of RH grips.

I think that I may have run across the thread / picture of the RH with Eagle grips on it that you refer to. Looked like rosewood, IIRC. Appeared to be a nice set of grips. I'll try to find it again.
