I've noticed a change lately that the language we in the gun community use to describe whether on not we like or dislike a certain type of firearm, has started to use adjectives like love or hate.

When did this black or white type of thinking creep into our discourse. Personally I've never met a gun that I didn't like, ever the two that seem to get the most emotion going like the Glock or Mosin-Nagant.

Would we as gun owners be better off being able to use adjectives such as like or dislike. Or should we press on with Love, hate, basher, fanboy etc.

And please tell me why you feel the way that you do.

No, not really! :D
I don't have a clue how to text message, or how to spell any of the slang they use for words.

I would have to agree that I too have never met a firearm that I hated. I don't care for some and don't understand some others but as a whole I like 'em just fine.

It depends on how strong you have an opinion on the matter. While being civil is necessary, it does not reflect how you feel about the topic or weapon. Calling a product a POS or the greatest thing on earth, has more expression than saying it is all right but not for me.

Just an opinion.

Hyperbole is one thing, but I dislike members terms so extreme to have no real value.

I hate fanboys! Why would I actually hate someone that pitiably immature that they aren't open to other people's likes and dislikes?

I love Glocks/1911s! I think we all understand that "love" is hyperbole in such a case. Of course such terms are too often followed by claims of undying devotion and the rejection of all other firearms as inferior in a twisted and creepy hoplophile rant reminiscent of Shakespeare's start-crossed lovers pledging their love.

I understand, I've seen it before, "Haters are just gonna hate!" as an answer to an affront or even perceived affront to one's personal choice in firearms. Foolish waste of time. I try to put out information I have, and if someone else has a negative viewpoint that cannot be swayed, all well and good, there's a million handgun choices out there so everyone can find the one that works for them, be it Walther, Ruger, Smith, Colt, or Raven or Hi Point.

I prefer rational descriptions. There are guns I like better than others; however, few are truly "worthless." Describing shortcomings without getting too emotional is far more informative.

People that are insecure are always the ones to quickly point out your ignorance, and their massively superior knowledge or Tactical Ninja experience.

There are some firearms I prefer, and some I do not care to own (specific examples are only provided upon request).

If your list has different firearms in different places than mine list, that's OK with me.

I voted We need to be civil to each other.

I'm just a dumb southern boy, mentored and raised as I was. This being, one should be civil, polite, in all affairs.

There is an old adage: The easiest way for some to build themselves up, are to tear down others.

There are times when one is best to either shut up, or just walk away from some things. Do so while being civil and polite.

Re: gun arguments. In a 1955 Field & Stream, there was an article 6mm vs .243 The argument over these two calibers has continued over the decades.

Re: Anti-Gun types, especially those against firearms for personal protection.
The reality is, one cannot change people, places and things. The only thing one can do is change themselves.

Another reality is, it often takes a tragic event to someone, or someone close to them, in order for someone to change their attitude and perceptions about firearms for personal safety.

Further, what are adjective's and verbs?

I think I was in shop class refinishing a rifle stock or rebuilding a 50 Ford Stromberg carb when the teacher covered that stuff in the English class I skipped?

Or else I was sleeping through it from hauling hay 16 hours the day before?

I was raised to be polite and courteous, and I raised my children to be the same way. There's too much hatred and anger in society already. We should be above that.

Interesting that this has come up again.

I've tried in the past to address posters calling a gun "junk" or some more colorful but similarly derogatory term, noting that for some THR member that same gun is what he has and shoots and depends on.

I've also attempted to engender a general sense of respect for others.

But I've been ridiculed and shouted down.

I've had several guns that just didn't trip my trigger:) I certainly didn't hate them but I really didn't use them and eventually traded them off. I've seen several guns in very sorry repair that I declined to shoot, I sure didn't hate the gun because of it.

I have several guns I love, it's because of where they come from. Memories from my grandfather. It's not the gun I love but the memories. If I had a gun that I had bad memories of I would probably say I hated it. But in the end it wouldn't be the gun but the memory.

But in the end, in todays terms hate doesn't mean hate anymore. It just means I don't like it. And very seldom does love mean love, it means I like it right now. I love my 1911's and revolvers. It wasn't really that long ago I loved several modern auto's.

I never realized this Gun Forum was Only for gun owner's with Doctorate's in English literature. If some people don't spell to someone's standard's who care's they don't have to read anything they dont want to,Let them start the English Doctorate user's only version of a gun web page then they can B***h all they want about "proper english"!
