Gun cases - cutout foam - any good ones?

What is a good rifle case that has the 3 layers of foam so that I can die cut my rifle into the middle layer and have some accessories cut out too?

I see the Pelican 1750 looks nice, but I am having a hard time finding big pics of it. Is it 3 layers or only 2?

I have a Browning Travel Vault #5115. It is of the three layer variety. I did the same thing you are mentioning. It is a two rifle case. Waterproof, floats, has wheels for toting. It also has an air lock to break the vacuum should you travel to a different elevation and try to open it. You could run over this with a truck and I doubt you could damage the guns inside. Was about $200 6-8 years ago. Very well made and worth the money.

I have a couple of the Starlight cases. They sound pretty similar to what DMShepard describes. I have this model, which has a 5-part foam system (1 thin sheet, 1 thick, 1 thin, 1 thick, 1 thin, in that order). One could actually fit four long guns into this case, provided that each was no thicker than 1½" or so, so that they could fit into the thick layer without overlapping. I also have the high-density foam, which doesn't compress, and holds the guns very firmly. One cuts out an outline of the gun in the thick foam, and fits it in.

These cases will float even when fully loaded - a plus if Katrina II happens to come along!

I have two Pelican 1750's. They have the three layers of foam.

Pelican also stands by their products. I loaned a case to a friend so he could transport his rifles on United Airlines. United trashed the case on his return flight, but the rifles were just fine. Pelican replaced the case at no charge.

ETA: The rep at Pelican mentioned that United Airlines was well-known for trashing rifle cases.

They had to work at trashing that case. For what Pelican's cost it should have come with a harem or at least a Bahamas cruise.

Well I got the Pelican 1750. Seems like a good case. My Winchester is about as good IMO interms of quality, but not for airline use. But I really like the die cut for the rifle more than pressure like most cases.

Any experience with the SKB cases? Midway has a two rifle case with foam cutouts that looks nice.

That looks nice, but this one I get to cut my own shape rather than a pre-sized one. I don't know, I am sure its a great case though. I just want a really snug fit.

I've been issued several Pelican cases, my last one came new and cut out for the M4+M203 and M9 had slots for 12 rifle mags, 4 M9 mags, little circle cut out for an Otis cleaning kit and a few other little spots for misc items. My first experinces with Pelican was for the DMR, and that thing got tossed off the back of a 5 ton, then thrown into the back of a cargo hummer, Rifle still had a perfect 300 yrd zero, after surviveing 12 weeks in 29 palms and never haveing to re-zero, I was pretty impressed. The throwing of my rifle was when my back was turned, btw. If a Pelican case is Marine Proof, it's good enough for everyday life.

I have a 1750, I picked it up new off Ebay shipped for $215, think it was called the "box store", they're out of the LA area in CA I think, the guy cuts some great deals, it's a second job for him.

The Pelican warranty reads somethink like, 'guaranteed for life, but not against shark attack, bears and children under 7' LOL, I got a kick out of it, never had a problem and thier worth thier money in my opinion.

Can you buy the materials to mix your own closed-cell foam? That would be very handy. Mix it up, pour it into the case, and then cut the shape out after.

Lucky, almost as good, you can order pre-cut-to-size closed-cell foam from here. Also, some manufacturers (e.g. Starlight) offer foam "refills" as needed.

Adequate foam on the cheap

Every sewing supply store I've been in has sold large sheets of both dense and light foam in thicknesses from 1-5 inches. I've used the dense foam (green in both the chains I've been in) as the middle layer in cases.

It's inexpensive enough to slice up and experiment with. It's also good if you want a "form-fit" case that will fit more than one rifle.

Isn't the stuff at sewing shops open-cell? I understood that it would trap moisture and rust your rifle?

I couldn't resist, and bought some egg-crate anyway though. Good for camping.

One of the nicest cases I've seen come from ICC. http://www.icc-case.com/ I ordered their heavier gauge aluminum case and cut my own inserts. Sportsmans Warehouse carries sleeping bag sized sheets of the foam (smooth & egg crate) in their camping department.

Depends on size and thickness of aluminum.....been a while, think mine cost around $250-$300.

I'm all about the Pelican 1750. It's damn near indestructible, and their warranty is the best you'll find. I know a guy who bought a broken Pelican case for real cheap, then sent it in to Pelican and they replaced it for free (minus shipping).

I like the 5014 double shotgun case by SKB.
There is the long rifle case with layered foam as well which comes with 2 layers.
