1 qt. Mobil 1 synthetic : 0,5,10W- 30W, do not use a heavier than W30 - ONLY (Mobil one: NO other synthetic.) **no ester based synthetic**
1 pt. Marvel Mystery Oil
1pt. STP
1 pt. ATF ( they prefer FMC synthetic or Mobil synthetic)
Mix well and store - you get enough to last a large group a very long time.

Just reviewing this recipe and I can certainly understand why it won't wash off easily. It's got one high film strength oil product, one oil film thickening product and two high detergent oils. No solvent action at all.

Wiping it off to remove the fouling with the excess would be hellish. But it would certainly form a protective barrier.

Personally I like the "Ed's Red" better as it works far better as a flushing action cleaner. With that Marine Frog Snot recipe "flush" becomes more of an "ooze" situation.

Now if that MFS combo was used to replace the "simple" ATF portion in the Ed's Red I suspect we'd have the best of both sides. A very liquid flushing cleaner combined with a strong film strength tenacious protecting oil film left behind once the solvents evaporate.

hmmm...Red Frog Snot...you may be onto something...:scrutiny:

adjective

adjective: clean; comparative adjective: cleaner; superlative adjective: cleanest

1.

free from dirt, marks, or stains.
"the room was spotlessly clean"

In the end hot soapy water will do the job as well as anything and better than most! lead and copper fouling need something else but for dirt, gum, powder residue the old way is still the best and cheapest.

Hoppes #9 to clean, BreakFree CLP to lube. If bore & cylinders are very fouled, Wipe Out, or Blue Wonder, or Sweets, or Butch's Bore Shine.

You bumped a five month old thread to ask that question?
Do a search for WD-40...you will find enough threads to keep you busy for the rest of the week.

Thanks for the input, but I did do a WD-40 search prior to my posting, and it came up "...no matches ".

Sorry if my question offended you .:)

Maybe someone else has a positive answer. I believe that's what THR is about.

Orion...

That would not be project orion would it ? The nuke powered spacecraft ? Okay..I digress..

One of our members did an awesome test of some 40 various products in regards to protection, friction, cleaning ability, etc. Normal WD-40 did not score very highly though WD-40 special did

The sticky thread is here
http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=751408

I do want to say, I am a believer in WD-40 however; the proof of what's best is in the testing

I went with the Frog Lube which scored like #2 in every category.

Also, if you look at his most recent update, you will find, the thinnest amount left behind as possible yield the least amount of resistance So some of these goopy homemade recipes might be good for storage, not for shooting.

Enjoy the review

Thanks ! Now that's what I call a good review.:)

I am a big fan of Ed's Red minus the acetone as a cleaner. I use a very light application of Militec-1 grease as my lube. If I want to use an oil on smaller or hard to reach parts, I use a 1:1 mixture of ATF and Mobil-1.

What I think ohbythebay meant was, why bump a 5 month old thread to ask a simple question that could have been asked by starting a new thread. Your question was sorta connected to the original thread but not really.

I have three cleaners/lubes that I use on everything. I use Hoppes and non-chlorinated brake parts cleaner to clean. For lube I only use Valvoline(Mobil 1 is good too I'm just a Valvoline guy) full synthetic 0w20 motor oil. It meets or exceeds all requirements of gun lubes and a quart of ot costs the same as six ounces of normal gun oil.

I've been oiling with it for over ten years and won't ever change.

Maybe my thinking is wrong, but I didn't want to clutter THR with a new thread, when there was one there already. As it turned out, posting # 34 gave a sticky thread that was exactly what I needed.

Just so you know, sometimes when a member of the forum opens an old thread they will leave without going through the whole thread again. The person who has the answer you're looking for might never see you question. In a new thread many more views will happen.

Hey do what you want, just some advice...
