Gun Companies to avoid.

I had a star firestar plus 9mm. It worked, looked decent, and was inexpensive. It was a good gun at its price point.

...except that Hi-Point gets good marks from real-world testers, as a cheap and excellent tool. It's not a collector's gun, or a competitor's, but it works.

the Walther P1's are among the absolute best surplus pistol deals going

A highly-underrated gun. I got one in excellent condition and it shoots quite well. I just got an aftermarket extra mag for it, but haven't tried it. I can report back. At least 2 manufacturers make new magazines for the thing now. Holsters are harder to find, but not impossible. Mine came with a military flap holster, but it smells funky from longterm storage.:)

Yes, it's only good for 8+1 rounds, but with California's 10-round magazine limit, I don't mind that much. If I could get a 17-round 9mm easily and legally, it'd tip the balance a bit, perhaps.

So is Llama a crappy company that just made one good gun once by accident, or a good company that just made one crappy gun once by accident? Or somewhere in between?

From what I gather, they make good guns only by accident. Besides the experience I've had with mine, I once saw a clerk at Academy Sports tell another customer not to buy a Llama .45 from them, because he'd only end up bringing it back. The clerk advised the customer to save up and buy a S&W 4516 that they had instead. Good advice indeed.

"If this thread runs long enough, you're bound to see every firearms maker"

Naturally, but there's another reason for this. Most folks probably only own one gun of any brand. There's no garauntee that the gun they own is one of the good ones made by that company. Its very possible, as noted earlier, for a good company to make a bad gun, and a bad company to make a good gun. Few people will have enough of any gun or brand to find what's what.

Glad someone said something about Vulcan ARs. Probably saved me a buncha hassle.

Anyone heard anything about WesTek ARs?

WARNING

Even though I'm sure most of you know how bad guns made by Jennings Firearms, Bryco Arms or Jimenez Arms are, I just felt I had to say it!!! (I think B.L. Jennings Inc. and CalWestco Inc. are in there to somewhere but all the same company) When you see the words "Saturday Night Special" Jennings/Bryco guns should come to mind. They are dangerous and have hurt people. They have so many lawsuits against them it isn't funny. That's why they change names so often.

I may be wrong and I'm sorry if I am but I've been told these guns are very dangerous so do yourself and anyone you know a favor, don't go near these guns.

I had a Bryco, it would shoot less then a clip snap off the firing pin, they sent me a second one and it did the same thing, they sent a third one and by then I'd bought a Taurus .38 snubby and put the gun away.

My cat found it and dispensed his displeasure on it.

The gun dissolved.

I have a RG-14, yes the infamous RG-14, it works just fine. I will not say it has anything approaching accuracy, I think that's a foreign concept to it but it functions and shoots and at very short range will put it in a man sized target.

I've never owned one, but The Vulcans I have seen were far worse than the .25 Ravens, Incidently, I love my Star BM..........Essex

I'd avoid any new S&W revolver, and S&W as a company.

Their customer service can be nothing short of appalling, like something out of a Monty Python skit.

Back in June, I sent them a gun to have the forcing cone recut and the barrel set back. They returned the gun to me damaged without comment. They put deep cuts in the side of the barrel. When called on it, they first denied it, then minimized it, then wanted to grind the crap out of the barrel as a fix. I've been going 'round and 'round with them since June without resolution.

If you go to www.smith-wessonforum.com you'll see a full account of this, as well as those of a guy who bought a revolver with the barrel bored off center, and a guy who bought a very expensive Customer Center 952 on which the hammer dangerously follows. There are other examples as well.

In all these cases, S&W were disrespectful and condescending regarding problems THEY caused.

Try and avoid Hesse firearms. They are now called Vulcan, as someone posted above, but they have a pretty bad reputation for poor quality and almost downright dangerous firearms.

I've been considering one of their rifle kits. Do you have personal bad experience with them you might care to share?
Thanks,
Bruce

Agreed, such as S&W will get mentioned in relation to the Sigma, when as a company they don't warrant inclusion.
S&W's customer service is ghastly.

I sent them a 29-2 to be repaired and they ruined the barrel. They refused to replace it and wanted to grind the crap out of it and "refinish" it instead. They didn't even have the integrity to TELL me they'd damaged the barrel before they returned it to me. Then they tried to deny they'd done it, when they were the ONLY ones who COULD have done it. I had to replace the barrel at my own expense, for which I have yet to be reimbursed. There were NO new barrels available, so I had to replace a damaged barrel with a finish worn barrel, which they will not refinish, because I wouldn't let them grind the crap out the barrel they damaged.

Whether you like their products or not, as a COMPANY, they're the pits.

I am not going to trash talk Iver Johnson's and H&R's but hope that others will so that the average price per handgun falls below $50. I will then buy them all up.

I cast my vote against Firestorm 1911 knock offs. Many parts aren't standard and can't be swaped out,

I believe the Firestorm 45's (1911 model)...

From what I recall from when Llama Max I and IIs and the FireStorm labeled guns were sold here in the US, they never were said to be 1911s, just 1911-styled or -like or-type guns. They never were said to be interchangale in whole or in part with the 1911. Never had or wanted one myself.

Star BM

My Star BM is a great gun. I use it for bowling pin shooting, and can beat everyone but the .45 guys. The guys I've beaten were using Glocks, Kimbers, Berettas, S&Ws, Colts, etc. I paid less than $200 for the Star.:D

I will never own another Rossi. I bought one years ago and had nothing but trouble with it. Every few rounds rfired through it and the cylinder rod would unscrew itself. I tried lock tight and that didn't work. I ended up trading it in towards something better.

Remember though that even junk guns can be deadly, I believe John Hinckley used one of their revolvers to shoot Ronald Reagan, and Brady of now anti-gun infamy.

Yes, but he failed at his goal. Had he used a better gun, he might be sipping margaritas with Jodie Foster right now.
