Gun Control Groups Prepare for 'National Day of Protest'

(CNSNews.com) - Gun control activists have declared Tuesday, Aug. 28, a "national day of protest to focus attention on the scourge of illegal gun trafficking."

The Brady Campaign, along with its Million Mom March chapters, said it will join the Rev. Jesse Jackson's Operation PUSH Coalition at demonstrations in cities across America.

Jackson's group chose Aug. 28 because it marks the 44th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.'s historic march on Washington.

As Cybercast News Service reported earlier, Jackson has attended a series of recent protests at a suburban Chicago gun store, which he blames for gun crimes in Chicago.

Anti-gun activists have confirmed more than twenty events so far, including a rally at a park in Newark, N.J., near the schoolyard where four college students were lined up and shot in the back of the head. Three of them died. Six people, two of them in this country illegally, have been arrested in connection with the case.

Activists also plan to protest at a Maryland gun store "that is responsible for the most crime guns found in Washington, D.C."

Other Aug. 28 protests and vigils are planned in the cities of Phoenix, Birmingham, Minneapolis-St. Paul, San Diego, Philadelphia, Dallas, Houston, Seattle, and Raleigh-Durham, to name some of them.

"The August 28 rallies will focus the public and push leaders at all levels of government to take action against the illegal gun market and to keep guns out of the hands of dangerous individuals," the Brady Campaign said on its Web site.

In addition, gun control advocates said they are launching a statewide letter-writing in California to build support for a crime-fighting "microstamping" bill being considered once again by the State Legislature. (See Earlier Story)

"We can't achieve Dr. King's 'dream' of what America can be when we lose 32 people every day to gun murders," said Brady Campaign President Paul Helmke. "Dr. King's focus on civil rights and non-violence should lead us now to ask each other and our leaders, 'What are you going to do about gun violence?'"

The Brady Campaign argues that if tougher laws make it harder for criminals to get guns, there will be fewer "gun violence victims."

But Second Amendment groups say criminals who want guns will always get them. They insist that tougher laws will affect only law-abiding Americans who have the right to defend themselves.

What am I going to do about gun violence? Buy more guns and shoot back!:D "32 people every day die from gunfire"? 70% of gunshot victims have criminal records, 64% have been convicted of a crime, each having an average of 11 arrest's, and 73% know the assailant.:D For more stats and facts to debunk this garbage, see www.gunfacts.info. Whoooooaaaaaaah.:D

71% of 32 = 23. So this represents 23 criminals shooting each other every day. I really don't care if criminals want to shoot each other, the more the merrier. I would guess that suicides represent another 2-4 death's every day. So this leaves the actual number of accidental firearm death's at around 3/day. Drowning is the second leading cause of death, far beyond firearms.

Its so easy to refute these lies.

By the way, "gun violence" = non-sequitar. Evil human's commit crimes, guns do not!

70% of gunshot victims have criminal records,

Seems to me that they shouldn't have been doing what they were doing.

At least this article gave a little space for pro-gun analysis.

If those statistics are true that is solid proof that there is nothing wrong with peaceful citizens from owning firearms. The other half of deaths commited with firearms are suicides, and we all know that banning firearms won't subside suicides.

Changes in THR structure to facilitate those goals:
Legal forum is now for legal issues only. When giving advice, please endeavor to provide links or references to original documents, laws and other relevant resources. Please keep the topics related to guns and RKBA.
Political topics go into Activism Discussion forum -- provided they are accompanied by plans of action. Mere griping is no longer appropriate for THR. If you want to discuss an injustice or a political development, propose a remedy!

If you have a plan to do something about it, repost in activism. If there is a legal question regarding it, this is the forum. If you just want to complain about it, wrong place.

I'll leave the thread open for now so people can discuss what they plan to do about it - not so they can rant about it.

Let them have their say, then we'll have ours. It's as simple as that. These baby boomers are will soon realize that we no longer live in 1992 and these simple theatrics and slogans no longer have any weight with the American people; especially younger folk like me, who have a general distaste for that entire generation. What I mean to say is that I believe young people, on the whole, are (or will be) more conservative than the boomer generation which continually spouts this nonsense. As a result, I think Jesse et al, will not have the desired effect. So let them have their say, then we'll have ours.

Prince, Another good post. You know if they were "really" only protesting ILLEGAL gun trafficking like the article says then we should be agreeing. Enforce the laws we have instead of creating new ones. But I suspect this isn't really what it will be about. More like what they think "should be" illegal.

Buy a gun, buy ammo, buy something that will annoy Jesse

I plan on taking delivery of my new Puma '92 16" SRC in .45 LC with a large loop lever tomorrow at my local Chicago area gun shop. Take that Jesse and Father "Flaky" Pfleger.

Don't "need" it, don't have a "legitimate hunting use" for it, (as the grabbers might say) I just wanted one for a long time.

Probably comes from an ill spent youth growing up on old John Wayne movies, The Lone Ranger and the Rifleman.

Maybe, if I'm very lucky they'll show up to protest while I'm picking up the Carbine. (Tempting as it may be for the media, if they show up I will not "twirl" the carbine in public.)

Of course Jesse better go somewhere other than Chuck's Gun Shop here tomorrow. They already have him indicted and a trial date set for November for his trespassing charges there. If he shows up there they might re-arrest him for aggravated trespass and hold him over with no bail.

He was more than just a little insulted last time because they actually held him (overnight I believe) for bail (paid for by Operation PUSH - just keep donatin' folks - pays for his child support too) and did not immediately release him on his own recognizance for the media waiting outside.

I expect Prince "Y" hit the nail on the head.

This kind of protest is old hat to most folks, including the media. It doesn't draw the crowds it used to (witness the MMM last few debacles and their dismal showing on their quickly cancelled Big Pink Bus tour).

You know you are on a losing side when there are more counter protestors and news people than actual protestors. That's why you will only see tight shots of Jesse and his buddies, no more than three or four people in the frame. They do not want you to see the empty streets behind and next to them. Kind of like a baseball game at the end of the season with no one in the stands. They only show tight shots of the pitcher and try to never show the empty stands. Same goes here.

If Jesse really wants to hold an "illegal guns" protest, why not have him march through Englewood here in Chicago and go door to door asking citizens if their sons are involved in gangs and searching their rooms together with the parents? Now that would make great TV footage!

Nah, he might actually get shot doing that. Protesting honest law abiding folks int he suburbs is a lot safer for him than actually confronting the problems in his own back yard.

I will not be surprised though if he gets himself and few others arrested tomorrow on purpose for trespassing again. It's the only coverage he's had this entire election season since the media corps all fell in love with Barrack Obama.

70% of gunshot victims have criminal records
Well, let's assume a CCL owner is attacked by a criminal and shoots the guy, that's one more "gunshot victim with a criminal record" - what should this number prove? That CCL owners are good at shooting criminals who wanna kill'em? Or that criminals spend most of their time killing other criminals?
Doesn't sound as if any law abiding citizen has got much to worry about.

Our "permit to acquire" law in Missouri expires at 12:01AM August 28th.

At 10:30 AM I am picking up my PT1911 with VZ 320 grips.

Sorry Jesse... Now go pound sand!!

Any active counter-protesting scheduled? A bunch of pro-2A'ers showing up to counter protest and get into each and every television shot of the er, "mainstream" media would go a long ways...

If this were the heyday of gun control, I'd say a counter protest would be in order.

Now, though, I think their events will get much less media coverage. Staging counter protests will only increase the media coverage.

May be a "Jambog" IIRC, but who am I to talk? I bought $100+ of ammo earlier, but forgot about saving something bigger for TODAY!

However, I fixed up my bills yesterday and will also be mailing off some small contributions to the NRA and SAF and CCRKBA today! :D

If I had ANY idea that there were protesters here locally, I'd go by and listen to them. Then tell them, "The owner of this establishment needs to come out and shake your hand - YOU just sold me *insert gun-related product here!*" - and then go in and make good on my statement! ;)

Monkeyleg has it right.

Here is what the Illinois State Rifle Assn. suggests ...

ISRA suggestions for Tuesday, August 28:

Ways to show your support for the Second Amendment
As you know by now, the Reverend Jesse Jackson, with assistance from some anti-gun organizations, continues his misguided attack on your right to keep and bear arms on Tuesday, August 28, with some protests in selected cities in the United States. Jackson has called for events in 25 cities, it looks like there might be about 15, including two in Illinois.

In Springfield, the Illinois Council Against Handgun Violence is going to stage a protest about the Virginia Tech massacre by lying on the ground. This in spite of the fact that in the months since the event, Federal and State legislation has been passed that would prevent a mentally unbalanced person, like the shooter in the VT incident, from buying a gun.

In the Chicago region, Rev. Jackson and Fr. Michael Pfleger are going to protest in front of DS Arms in the Barrington area. There is no connection from top shelf rifles made for the law enforcement and civilian markets to criminal activity in Chicago.

In past activity this summer, ISRA has called for counter-protesters. In hindsight, ISRA has seen that liberal media air time of Jackson's protests is greater when there is a perceived conflict. This could work in favor of Jackson and his agenda to take away your right to own firearms. Realizing this, ISRA has not called for counter-protesters since then. ISRA then saw that when no one shows up to oppose Jackson and Pfleger, the story does not play for long in the press, if at all. For Tuesday, August 28, ISRA is asking you to show your support for the right to keep and bear arms in one or more of the following ways:

1. Be the Voice of the People: Write a letter to the editor of your local newspaper in support of the right to keep and bear arms.

2. Support your local gun shop: Visit your favorite store on your lunch break or after work and make a purchase.

3. Exercise your rights: Visit your local range after work, sharpen your skills and your resolve.

The worst thing you can do to an ignorant loudmouth is ignore them and laugh at their expense. I expect about 15 second of TV time tonight or on "the week in review" news Friday with a short tape of Jesse speaking. No major coverage.

Seeing as I'd love to walk by some of these clowns into a gun shop and purchase some goods, it's unfortunate there are no protests around here. But today looks as good a day as any to finally get that recoil pad installed on my Remington 1100.

Are you saying you have to get a permit to exercise your 1st amendment rights?

Missouri's expiring "Permit To Aquire" only applied to handguns. It was an old Jim Crow law enacted primarily to keep undesirables (read black) from legally buying in the white market. We used to have to apply to the Co Sheriff, pay for a permit, and wait for permission before we could take possession of a pistol. This applied to private sales as well as from dealers. I know for a fact that most people in Mo. who were involved in firearms didn't know that every time they bought a pistol from their neighbor they were committing a misdemeanor.

After the NCIS system went into place, this system was pointless. It's only taken, what 13 years ? for our politicians to realise it.

I will take action to further the first of Dr. King's focus--civil rights including the right to self defense. That should affect the second in a positive manner.

In Springfield, the Illinois Council Against Handgun Violence is going to stage a protest about the Virginia Tech massacre by lying on the ground.

And here I thought that the the anti gun crowds were not going to take gun violence, lying down. :)

a protest about the Virginia Tech massacre

...because you know, the VT murders really have a lot of supporters, and it's important to show that there are at least some people out there who find mass murder to be a bit gauche.

Well, it looks like, thanks to the overwhelming numbers of protesters at rallies across the USA, Tuesday, August 28th, 2007 will go down in history as...

uh... 8/28/07.

And for me, the day I finally finished putting my A4 HBAR together.:)
