Frisco... unfortunately...
What are the stupidest things you've heard someone say about guns? This is a follow up to the other thread, which had me in stitches. Here's my two.

"Oh yeah, the desert eagle. Thats the one that fires 3 times at once, right?"

"Yeah, the M60. Gotta love those .50 cal machine guns."

jeeze...

I knew a gunsmith who built up an Ackley Improved '06. He swore he could hold on a deer's back at 600 yards and hit the heart. He got mad when I asked how high he moved up for the second shot which actually hit the heart. :D

Or the guy who came to my uncle, complaining about the sight-in on his scope. He'd missed a deer at "300 yards". He got plumb irate when my uncle sat down at the 100-yard benchrest to check the rifle: "Yeah, that's 300 yards!" Yes, well...

And the oldster who'll tell you, "Aw, you can't hit anything with one of them Colt Ottomatics!"

:), Art

I was at a gun shop this past weekend and while waiting for the dealer to get on with my paperwork there were a few people to my right examining an AK. The person examining the rifle, about 5'5"-5'6" 225-250#, made the comment, "Do these kick as bad as the AR? Cuz I know them things will knock you on your (butt)."

Had to think about baby seals being clubbed to keep from laughing.

Girlfriend: "Guns are bad".

Me: "How can guns be bad? They are innanimate objects. Only sentient creatures can be either good or bad. Why do you think guns are 'bad'?

Girlfriend: "Because guns are designed to kill people".

Me: "So do you think swords are bad too?".

Girlfriend:"No".

Me: "That doesn't make much sense now does it"?

Girlfriend: "FASCIST!".

--------------------

I think I'm slowly winning her over!

If calling you a fascist is progress, I'd hate to see where she started at. :uhoh:

Anyways, lesee here...

I once had a fellow insist that, while in the Air Force, he learned to hit targets at three hundred (300!) meters with the Beretta 9mm pistol. No, I'm not making this up. Also talked about how he thought it was ironic that the military issues a handgun that has more stopping power than the issue rifle.

Uh...5.56mm is no powerhouse as far as rifle rounds go but it beats 9x19mm 124grn in my book. I also asked him about the elevation required to hit a target at 300m with a 9mm round with a nominal muzzle velocity of 1150-1200 fps...

Well just to give you an idea. The Beretta 92 has a barrel that is slightly tipped downward. If you aim at a target 200 yards out and level the sights the bullet will hit the dirt halfway out.

(Just by coincidence I tried this yesterday :D )

I'm still trying to find load data for the .357sig plus-plus-P-plus-plus, that certain LE agencies apparently use.

Closest thing I can find is called "double charge".

Man... I though I read an article where most folks in the Air Force 'qualify' by shooting either a 38 Smith, a 1911 or an M9 at 25 meters... As I recall, they had to get about 6 shots in the 10 ring out of 25 shots.

And I've done a fair amount of shooting my M9 wannabe Taurus PT99 at 50, 75 and 100 yards and believe you me... that 100 yard target is a heck of a challenge... even for someone with quite a bit of experience of 100 yard pistol shooting. I think at 300 meters, it would have at least 50 ft/lbs of energy remaining or just barely enough so the target might realize he was hit with something. :p

I have met a fair number of shooter that don't seem to know the difference between feet and yards. Makes me wonder how they ever hit anything past 100 yards with a shotgun slug.

Woman at gun shop, "I want a small gun because it has less recoil." While looking a a full sized Glock to a Compact Glock, both in 9mm.

Over heard at a fast food place:
Guy number one, "So what caliber is an M60?"
Guy number two, "M60, well that would be a 60mm."

After watching me shoot the Poly-Tech 762 for a while, the infamous "What does anyone need one of those things for anyway?"

My pat answer is the old, "If I have to explain the 2nd amendment to you, you won't understand anyway"

Adios

I shoot trap and ipsc for my local gunshop and I'll show a few guns now and then to customers and one time this rather tall man came in about 6'4" 250lbs african american, and he said "yo, I wanna glock 9" I said "ok sir, do you have a specific model you want?" he replied "nah man jussa glock 9, like dat one!" (pointing to a kimber 1911) before I could think of something to say about his ignorance he then pointed out one of those mossberg shotguns with the pistol grip and the air cooled 18" barrel and said "aw man I want one uh those" and asked if he could hold it, before I could react one of the employees at the shop asked him if he was a felon and he replied "yea man I just got out for assault with a deadly weapon and aggravated assault" the employee quickly asked him to leave...

it amazes me how ignorant and apathetic some people could be. and then to have the nerve to call a kimber a glock! ....people these days....:banghead:

"Desert eagle never made a 357 and never will the Germans would never stand for it"

Overheard at an indoor range. About 3 of us stepped back to see who was saying this all holding our mouths.:barf:

The lady wearing a leather jacket that said to me its wrong to kill animals for humanistic gains.

I did not challenge her, it would be against my morals to have a battle of wits with an unarmed person.

I heard this on The History Channel, they were doing a history of the guns of WWII and they had a vet talking about the Colt .45. He said that most people couldn't shoot the 1911 very well because they shot it from the hip and the right way to shoot a .45 is to "come down on your target. Yuo can't miss". What the heck does that mean?

I have seen this vet before on other History Channel shows and he never sounded stupid before. Just because he was a Ranger (or whatever) doesn't make him an expert on everything.

Did anyone else see this guy?

He wasn't sounding dumb. He was just a man of his times.

"coming down on the target" mean to sweep the sights down across the target, settle the gun and aim, and then pull the trigger.

That used to be a fairly common theory and practice for target shooting, that you got a steadier, more natural hold if you dropped the gun down onto the target instead of bringing it up. Supposedly the muscles used to stop the descent of the gun did a better job of holding the gun than using the muscles that controlled the rise yadda yadda yadda...

So no, he wasn't sounding stupid.

If you go to a match with some older (even some younger) shooters, you'll see some of them using this technique.

yea I saw that guy, it sounded wierd to me at first but he knew what he was talking about... I clarified it with my grandpa who is a koren and veitnam war vet.

Coming down on the target:
My father does the same thing. He was in the Air Force between Korea and Vietnam. He'll let the muzzle slowly drop across the target, then squeeze. Not really my style but it works okay for him.

full auto AK and Vietnam vet...

I was looking at AK's in a Califonia gunstore before they got
banned and another customer walks up and starts talking about
his AK47, he says his was converted to "FULL AUTO" ! then he
says he almost got shipped out to Vietnam but by the time his
unit was ready to go the US started pulling out of Vietnam.

I noticed there is always some jerk that starts saying his gun is
Full Auto? must be an undercover BATF agent trying to make a
conversation? I hear this bs all the time at gunshows. :cuss:

I work with a guy who claims to have been in the Navy and to have shot the "military version" of the 5.56. Apparently it's different than the civilian version, a 95gr bullet or some crap like that. Same guy also claimed to have jumped from the deck of an aircraft carrier into the water while at port.
