Gun Fashion Question

I'd be leaning toward something classic, maybe a deep blue USFA 1910 Commercial copy with aged ivory grips in an El Paso Saddlery retro holster carved in Celt patterns.

I suppose i could address this on SHOOTING GALLERY, being as my ancestor "stacked the damn English around him like cordwood" on Culloden Moor before he was finally brought down...

Of course, McBane plaid is some of the most butt-ugly stuff I've seen!

When I'm in a kilt for a formal affair, it would be a Colt 1903 in a classy, tooled leather shoulder holster (concealed under my dinner jacket).

If you're wearing a Utilikilt, or similar modern kilt that uses a belt, carrying is really no different than with pants. Any good IWB or OWB holster will work fine, with the normal consideration for cover garments. Carrying a smaller gun in a sporran is also a solution several of my pipe band acquaintances use.

I never really understood the idea of thigh carry, though. Seems to me that carrying a pistol on the inside of the thigh would be really uncomfortable.

I thought about carrying a converted '58 Remington sheriff's model in a CS marked flap holster
Does that sound acceptable?
would a gun belt be considered along the same lines as a sword belt? in earlier times the rule was one for your kilt, one for your Sporran and one for your sword in regards to belts. Thus no undue weight would be placed on the belt holding your kilt up.

What to Carry

I know we've all offered ideas. I especially liked the idea of the Browning BDA, a hi-power, or the Colt 1903. Your Remington `58 wouldn't be bad, but I don't know that I could bring myself to carry a single action. Maybe one of the new S&W Top Breaks? I can't find a picture of one, but they are remaking several variances of these.

I seem to remember hearing that clansmen used have a holster somewhere on the inside face of their targe. Don't know if it's true, but it would be quite the conversation piece.

Don't mind the philistines.

I'd say go with a small-medium single stack auto, worn IWB, in a tuckable holster if needed.

Bulldog

One of the British "Bulldog" revolvers might be appropriate. Or, of course, the Webley (I would choose the Mk VI). I have one cut to use .45ACP rounds, and while not up to the trigger pull standards of a S&W, it is reasonably accurate at short range. It is, however, a rather large revolver, so inside the sporran is likely not a wise choice.

One reponse I didn't see here to the "what does a Scotsman wear under his kilt?"

His shoes! If he has any.:D

Two questions, not one

I'm seeing room for a little creative rebellion here.

I have a fashion question concerning handguns.

What firearm does one carry when wearing a kilt?
Please note that the first statement specifies "handgun"
whereas the second specifies "firearm",
which can include long guns.

As concerns "handgun",
IMSO (in my Scottish opinion)
ain't no way in hell
that a semi-auto goes with a kilt. :p
My preference is here.
It'd likely be carried in a shoulder holster.

However, if long arms are to be considered,
then I'd suggest something relatively more ...
um, primitive, something that would open large holes in CQ,
and a nasty pattern of 8-9 9mm balls at 50 m.
(See user name for preference.)
I mean, really: doesn't "shotgun" and "kilt" just go together
in some mythical battle tale?

Of course, if the words "handgun" and "firearm" hadn't been specified,
I'd have listed my Ka-bar, a spike tomahawk
or an Angus Trim sword as most appropriate.

Nem, who is wearing a camo utilikilt as he writes this...

PS: welcome to THR, Jefferson.

Depends on the pistol, I think. Personally, if you've got a nice stainless piece (that's what you want when you're carrying open :p), you want black leather, period. Personally, I like either cross draw or strong side carry, but I can't think of an OWB holster which can accommodate a kilt belt's thickness. Speaking from personal experience, IWB with a kilt is a real PITA; with a leather belt of that size, it causes the gun to dig in quite uncomfortably, and additionally makes it less accessible.

A lot of these recommendations (USGI holster w/ 1911 or revolver) are good. Any good leather thigh holster would probably do the job nicely. Again, I like black. :p

You could also try thigh carry. But, IMO, that kinda defeats the whole reason for wearing a kilt (comfort) as it's really, really uncomfortable. Especially with hairy legs and warm weather (if you're Scottish you know about at least one of those) :p.

You could always try the Rob Roy approach: stick it (a large revolver) in your belt, gangsta style. It is, for whatever reason, a look which works.

.357 revolver on the hip with a modern kilt, in a shoulder rig with a Victorian/dress kilt. With a great kilt, probably black powder wheel lock built into a targe. A wood+blue shotgun would work with any of those. Also, don't forget the less-lethal options. Some folks like pepper spray, but I prefer mace. My favorite has a flanged head with a studded oak handle.

The Irish invented kilts and bagpipes. The Scots still haven't gotten the joke. ;-)

Kilt FAQ:

Is anything worn under your kilt?
Nope, it's all in perfect working order.

What do you wear under your kilt?
Traditional Scottish underwear. Boots.

Why are you wearing a kilt/skirt/dress/*that*?
Because they don't make trousers that can contain me.

You're a Scotsman, in a kilt, with a big knife....I don't think you really need a gun.
