Gun Snobs????

To me, a gun snob is the guy who refuses to accept that there are affordable alternatives to his mega buck guns. Sure it'd be nice to have a stable full of $1-2k+ guns, but that's not realistic for a lot of us. To look down on lower priced alternatives is sheer snobbery. I have a few high dollar guns, but still choose to defend my home with a Ruger pistol.

Don't forget the optics snobs too. I think there's more of them than gun snobs, or at least I run into more of them.

a gun snob seems a lot like a car snob...insisting that theirs is better, or will only use a certain brand/type. everyone has different wants/needs

My girlfriend calls me a gun snob because I correct all the inaccuracies we see on TV (He totally couldn't have fired 40 rounds out of a moving car at a stationary object with only one handgun!!!).

But then again, when I see Star Trek I'm quick to point out that faster-than-light travel isn't possible and that there isn't any sound in space. Perhaps I'm just a technical accuracy snob.

I think I am a little snobbish or should I say prejudice?

I'm a 1911 fan and don't really care for certain models of guns, not that they are a bad gun, I just don't care for them. When I hear the owners of other models going on and on about how great their guns are I tend to look down on that person. What works for one person may not work for another.

I do try to offer suggestions and teach people the differences between models and let them make an informed decision.

Do a search for a thread on THR about Hi-Point handguns. You'll see some gun snobs there for sure.

Preference versus snobbery.

I have a strong preference for 1911 pattern handguns. A snob would say that anything else is junk, not worth the money, etc. There's platform snobbery (real shooters use wheelguns), brand snobbery (Brand X is good, everything else is junk), gadget snobbery (I've got all the hoo-hahs so I must be a better shot), etc. Refusal to admit you A) might be wrong or B) are in a different situation than someone else can bring you up on charges.

There are some things, we'll use safety as an example, that are not open for debate. Firearms, gear, tactics, training methodology, all are open for at least some debate.

There are many snobs of different flavors everywhere. Whatever. The ones I'm confused about are those that have rooms full of guns that they've never shot, and who maybe show up at a range 4 times a year.

IMO, there is confusion on two different characters.

A Gun Snob would typically be a person that only likes high-end firearms and believes that prices is the sole factor in determining performance.

A Fan Boy would be someone who only purchases firearms from one manufacturer, rabidly defends that company and feels they can do no wrong and are above all others.

A snob can actually be quite an accomplished shootist. I'd say a snob in shooting would most likely have that character trait anyway. It could be a tupperware shooter, a high end 1911 shooter, or a fellow brandishing one of rhe German whizbangs. Gad I own all of the above in my 34 handgun collection but, I often carry a simple CZ40 as a carry gun. But, most of the time I have my Sig 229 or HK P2k hidden in a Wild Bill's No Such Agency holster. Gad, I guess I am a snob. Oh well.

The "snobs" I've met are generally people who know nothing about firearms, and either A) play counterstrike 26 hours a day, or B) run a business that sells firearms.

They act like what little they hear from other people who are oblivious is fact, and discount anything you have to say, because "who are you?".

I get that all of the time at the gun shops cause I'm young.

Know that one all too well ;)

Hope not

I hope I'm not a gunsnob - I'm attempting to purchase one of each type (not one of everything). I do get tired of those who believe that their firearm is the best/only - their education obviously needs to be enhanced.
Each has a different function & limitation so I don't see any point in arguing over which is best, as none are the best at everything.
Oh, and by the way - there is ONLY one 1911 & that is manufactured by Colt.

Taurus, Hi-Point and Kel-Tec threads really bring the snobs out of the woodwork. The sad part is that most of them have never had one, but can tick off all kinds of (usually old and outdated) 'I heard' reasons not to get one...Go to Rifle Country and confess to a desire to alter a milsurp in any way and watch the carnage...

The "gun snobs" I've met are generally _new_ shooters who just started shooting for a _couple_ of years and think they know it all. These are the types that believe their gun brand is the best, etc. These folks may have gone to a few local competitions where they are top dogs, but they have not gone to any major competitions.

As the above types of folks shoot a few more years and get more exposure, they will become humble and realize the following:
1. Placing 1st (or even near the top) at a major competition is hard
2. There are more than just pistol shooting waiting for you to try out there
3. Becoming a more well rounded shooter means trying and competing across different shooting disciplines even benchrest :)
4. Come to appreciate all firearms even a hipoint (well, maybe the hipoint appreciation will take a few more additional years)

A gun snob is someone who looks down on my Ruger P97 because it was so inexpensive, especially when I tell the snob that I got rid of my Kimber because the Ruger shot better, was far more reliable, and was not nearly as fussy about the brand of 45 ACP I put in it.

Snobs are folks who see their gun, their car, their SUV, their cell phone, their PC, their camera, their wife, their girlfriend, etc. as being superior and therefore far better to whatever anyone else has. They did the research, they read the reports, they did their homework, they know all about all the others, etc. And, money is always better spent by them than by anyone else. Yadda, yadda....

snob (snŏb)
n.
One who tends to patronize, rebuff, or ignore people regarded as social inferiors and imitate, admire, or seek association with people regarded as social superiors.
One who affects an offensive air of self-satisfied superiority in matters of taste or intellect.

a snob is just that...a snob. It could be a car/house/education/pet/religious and or guns. People with inferiority complexes. We all know the guy who knows very little about weapons...the guy who, after a little bit of internet info search, goes out and purchases the most expensive weapon he can find...then suddenly looks down on every other weapon brand/caliber/experience etc., and of course, they would never own, fire or even experiment with anything else.
