I'm always surprised by the high transfer fees of gun shops. Right now I'm looking at maybe picking up someone's used Glock 26 -- anyone know what The Four Seasons in Woburn, MA charges for transfers? What is it up to now thirty dollars -- more than that?

Sorry, I can't answer your question, but I'm lucky. FFL friend and neighbor will do mine for $10.00 bucks. His prices normally beat everyone hands down, so I can use him as a one stop shop. I tell him, this is what I can get it for elsewhere, what's your price? He actually doesn't mind when he can't do better. I give him his $10.00 and get my firearm.

You're damn lucky -- I think I've found out it's $40 for the transfer. Can you believe it? What's more -- I don't know if there are additionally fees -- like purchasing a lock with it too and tagging on state tax. It's worse than buying a used car...

Mastro ... it does seem to vary - enormously!!

I am another ''fortunate'' .... my FFL does me $10 .. and has done so many times. I do buy quite a bit from him but reckon that is pretty good.

I must be fair in that it is not something we can expect ''for free'' and it does/can take time and paperwork .. and, time is money. However, I am of the opinion that in some cases people are really ripped off.

If I had to I could live with $20 ... £25 absolute tops. But when I hear of $40 and $50 then something seems a bit wrong. Even worse when a dealer wants to charge a % of the weapon value on top of that!!!!

The local dealer that I have been using just informed me today thay they are raising their transfer fee from $25 to $35 AND is now going to charge SALES TAX!

I am going to start looking Monday for a dealer who do it cheaper.

SportingArms.com north of Fort Worth only charges $15 and told me they are glad to get the business.

Matter of fact when I wanted him to order a couple Makarovs for me he said if I'd do the ordering all he would have to charge me is the $15 instead of the usual dealer markup.

Smart man.

He's made a repeat customer.

"You are all lucky, because the FFL dealer I do business with charges $65."

One45auto- Move your business! Where are you in MD?

I'm just wondering - How many of you who pay "sales tax" on your transfers have checked the state statutes on taxes.

I live in FL, and the state stance on "SALES AND USE TAX" is pretty clear. Not many people realize that they have to pay tax on items that they USE, not neccessairily purchase out of state and have shipped in.

Locally, one charges $10, another charges $20, yet another gets $35. One place used to charge 10% of the selling price. None charge a sales tax.
Guess which one I use? :D

45Badger,

I live in Columbia, and believe me when I tell you that there aren't any gunshops in the area - you have to drive to Severn, Reisterstown, Baltimore, or Silver Spring to find any decent dealers. :(

"...now going to charge SALES TAX..." That sounds like a State requirement. However, a gun shop is a business the same as any other business. The owner is in business to provide for his family the same as you going to work. You wouldn't expect a mechanic to work for free and you wouldn't either. The cost of everything goes up. Why would you expect a gun shop's service fees not to go up as well? Especially if you just avail yourself of this one service he provides.

my guy charges $25. He's the kitchen table type so it's really just a hobby and all he does is mainly transferrs. I'm very happy with him though.

Don't know about your neck of the woods but my favorite shop charges me $10 to sell/ship a gun (plus shipping of course) and $10 to receive a gun that isn't widely available. $20 to receive a gun that he can easily get for me.

No complaints... good guy, good shop, good prices. Shame more shops can't have the same attitude.

Well, I found two people near me now that do the transfers for $25. One guy is damn near down the street from me and still hasn't returned my e-mails. What is it with FFL dealers that they're so slow to respond? Looks like I'll have to call soon if he doesn't answer after tomorrow. :banghead:

Up here in the high country $10-$15 seems about averge. and I've never heard on taxes on it. Retailers collect taxes on sales and useage, not on paperwork. At least not around here.

Lennyjoe,

I followed your advice and called several of the FFL holders listed on that site. One said he stopped doing transfers over six months ago and cannot understand why he's still receiving calls, while four others have raised the stated prices. For instance one was listed at $20, but qouted me $35 plus ten for the background check. Another was supposed to be $30 but is now $40 - plus the additional ten for the check. Needless to say that's only $15 less than the dealer I use now, and I'd burn half that difference in gas just driving to and from the guy's shop. It's not worth my using an unknown simply to save seven or eight bucks.

I do appreciate your trying to help me, really I do, but I guess I'll just have to stick with my regulars and continue to pay them their $65. :banghead:

A dealer in my area does it free if he knows you and you have bought from him before.

Don't always believe what you read as far as transfer fees go. A local gunshop in my area (M&M Plimoth Bay Outfitters) lists their fee on Gunbroker.com (among others) as $30. I called to confirm this before having a rifle shipped to them, and the guy told me it's $30 only if the gun is under $300. Anything over, it's 10% the cost of the rifle. Plus tax. How would they know how much I paid, anyway? It burns me that they'd try to jack you for the same amount of paperwork regardless of the price of a gun. That's capitalism, I guess. But they lost some $$$ and I drove an extra 40 minutes for a much better deal.

Charge for transfer is all over the map in Central Texas - I've seen everything from $10 flat fee per gun to 10% of gun cost.

I use a guy in Florence, TX who charges $10 per gun and is glad for the custom.

It does mean I have to drive 20 minutes out into the Texas Hill Country.

Poor me!

:D

I've used the same dealer for all my orders. Initially, he charged $20, but doesn't charge anything now because I usually buy some ammo from him.
