I bought a shotgun off a forum and when i got it it had a live round in the chamber.I took it out of the case and opened the action and out popped a 12ga turkey load.

Years ago I went to an auction that had several firearms for bid. A bidder was checking out a firearm and racked the slide. guess what came out. You bettcha. A round was in the chamber. When me and my buds get together we allways check out the gun to see if it's unloaded

I just remember something from awhile back, didn't Henry ship out some rifles that were still loaded from test firing, and some of these were found to be loaded and chambered on the gun racks at some Walmarts?

I always check an unknown gun that comes into my hand of course (and assuming it is at a gunshop, appreciate when the clerk checks before handing it over).

However, I don't stick my finger into the action of locked open firearms for two reasons:

1) I wouldn't trust the "feel" to tell me anything anyway; I guess my fingers are fat, but they aren't likely going to fit into any chambers. Certainly nothing smaller than a .45 casehead.

2) If the slide/bolt catch lets go while your finger is in the way, your finger will likely then be in the chamber whether it fits or not, and will be staying there for a while.

I want to see two things when checking a firearm: Light through the magwell, and no casehead in the chamber. I don't "trust the extractor", but as far as I'm concerned my vision is much more trustworthy and safer than sticking a finger or other foreign object into the action.

However you choose to clear a firearm is fine with me. In aviation we are taught to both look and touch. The theory is that with repetitive tasks you can over look something. But if you use two senses (visual, and tactile) you won't overlook it. All I can say is it works well for me.

I was in a sporting goods store in Upstate NY over the summer, and I spotted a used 45 in a glass display case, along with about 20 other handguns. Right next to to the 45 was its fully loaded magazine! There was no lock on the gun or the display case, and NO employees anywhere near the area. And this in New York!

Wait a minute, Upstate NY is NOT New York.
