Halloween costumes & open carry

So if we don't have expensive holsters and training we should not carry firearms? Would you like to make some laws? Run in the democratic primaries maybe?

No, if you don't have a retention holster and training, you probably shouldn't open carry. Like a lot of gun safety rules, shouldn't be a law, should be followed anyway.

how some guy dressed up as G.I Joe had his gun pulled out by a kid that ended up shoting himself in the foot (or worse).

If a kid that is young or dumb enough to shoot himself or others thinking a real gun is a toy can get your handgun away from you YOU DON'T DESERVE TO OWN A HANDGUN!

You guys sound like a bunch of overprotective mothers!

The way I see it this isn't much different from what you would see at a SASS match, or normal open carry. Practice the same situational awareness you should always have when carrying, don't do anything stupid, and you'll be fine.

There was a time when it was normal to see people dressed up like cowboys and packing real sixguns. Around here it's still not unusual.

Cool. I always wanted to go to a costume party as an german SS officer.
As for the gun, sure you can carry the real gun, just carry it without bullets, you can even carry it without the magazine. I dont think a kid or someone can shoot himself with a gun without bullets. I also dont think anybody on the party will have the ammo for your gun.

Just a very bad idea. :uhoh:

Holloween costume => mask + gun = bad idea
...says it best

And anyone who comes back posting that those of us who think it's a bad idea are antis, or hypocritical, or don't see that it's "just open carry," well as far as I'm concerned, your worldview is a bit narrow. Open carry is not a good idea when it can cause confusion.

"yes, it's real... no, it's not loaded... and NO you cannot play with it"

Some of us DO go to halloween parties that are adults only... I don't see a problem with it, I would reccommend that it not be loaded though. (although you could keep a loaded mag handy in a pocket just in case...)

I am generally in favor of open carry, that being said here are some problems I have with this idea.

1. Most Halloween parties that I go to serve alcohol, Guns+Alcohol= . Even if you aren't drinking, some one else could get drunk and think it would be funny to grab your gun.
2. Police deal with LOTS of wierd sh$T on Halloween and giving them one more thing to be freaked out about is just asking for trouble.
3. The confusion between REAL and FAKE. This is a time of frivolity, where people assume that what you are wearing is a costume and not real. Unless you are at a private party with other "Gun People" and every one knows that the gun is REAL and knows how to respect that, most people will see your gun and assume it is fake or unloaded.

Open carry on normal days it fine, people will see it, recognize it as real, and leave it alone. Open carry on carnival days is a bad idea because some people will see it, NOT recognize it as real and could act in a dangerous manner because of the that false assumption.

Unless you can ensure 100% weapon retention and plan to stay away from drunk/crazy people and police officers, then I would stick with a concealed weapon (out of sight, out of mind).

How many of you all dress up for Halloween, be it to take your kids around and trick-or-treat or to host/go to a party? My second question is how many of you pick costumes that allow you to add a firearm as part of the costume, and thusly allowing you to open carry w/o anyone thinking anything of it? (note: only to be done if there will be no imbibing of alcohol... duh)
Is open carry legal where you live? If not, Halloween doesn't make it legal.

I must have missed something. I have read the 2nd Amendment any number of times, and I seem to have missed the parts about training and retention holsters every time.

Could you kindly show me where those are mentioned in the 2nd Amendment?

Last Halloween my kids and I went out trick or treating- I was dressed as a cowboy, with a nice real cowboy action holster and a nice real single-six in it. The single six was unloaded. I don't know if I would go to a party dressed the same way, but for trick or treating it was just fine. I'll probably do the same this year.

I've got no problem with open carry, but I have to agree that I think doing it as part of a costume is a bad idea. If you did have an incident, it could easily complicate the situation significantly.

I suppose my daily dress would count for a halloween costume in many places ... ;)

(shirt & jeans, scuffed lace-up riding boots, straw hat, and DA revolver on my belt)

I don't particularly dress any different on Oct 31 (though it's colder then so I might be wearing a coat).

TallPine, you beat me to that thought. Gun or no gun, I feel like I'm out of character if I leave my hat off on Oct. 31.:scrutiny: :D :D

I got some cheap real imitation nickel plated cap guns when I saw them in the toy aisle of the grocery store. That way I have a cheap and quick, if not quite original, costume. Put on some of my Cowboy Shooting duds, and slip those 3/4 size plastic beauties into the leather. No one is going to mistake those for real guns, which is fine with me. I think they come across as playful and totally in the spirit of Halloween.

I've heard most of the guys who spin sixguns are using die-cast replicas. They're not hurt if they get dropped and they can't be made to fire. Unless they're like that one guy I watched at Mule Camp... he demonstrated both spinning and quickdraw trick shots with stage blanks.

Check local laws

First Check you state and local laws to find out if open carry is legal and if there are any restrictions for carrying on Halloween.

halloween georgetown dc

young fool went out as crocodile dundee. with real knife. as bars close brawl breaks out. fool's story is that as hes jostled in brawl he pulls knife and waves it to keep folks away. stabs a guy with kids in the chest and kills him.
neither guy was really part of the brawl.

if i was just going out with kids i would feel cool with open carry as part of costume. places where folks are boozing i'd be real careful .
