Aluminum is also a bad idea. Aluminum oxide is very hard and abrasive--it's the same material that "ceramic" sharpening stones are made from.

Anodizing is a chemical reaction that changes the surface of aluminum. The anodized surface, depending on the process used is between the hardness of ruby or sapphire.
+1 on Aluminum being a bad idea. It doesn't have to be anodized to scratch a steel barrel. The reason Aluminum doesn't corrode is because the surface layer immediately oxidizes and "seals" off the interior from further oxidation. This oxidation layer is aluminum oxide and is an abrasive. I never use aluminum cleaning rods anymore for this very reason.
