I live in Seattle. I sure wish my carry permit was more like a credit card than the fragile piece of paper it is. I always laminate mine, but after a couple years in my wallet, they are hammered.

Really?

They don't do a card that looks like a driver's license?

Bummer, man.

The ones I've seen from the places I've lived all looked to be durable -- basically just like a DL -- easily up to normal wallet wear and tear.

In TN they are made from the same thing as drivers licenses. My permit number is even the same as my DL number.

Virginia does the same thing. They print your license on a desktop printer then cut it out with scissors. Mine looks like a five year old went to town on it.

In Michigan, individual counties are in charge of issuing the permits. The cheap counties have a paper permit that they laminate with a portrait glued on. Other counties have a one-piece plastic driver's license sized permit with a digital photo printed right on them.

Mine looks like it was made in a basement by some 14 year old kid. It's over-sized and won't conveniently fit behind my DL. The paper actually hangs out of the bottom of the plastic a little. I'm slightly worried that if I have to present it at a traffic stop out of state, the non-Michigan LEO will think it's fake.

Fortunately, Wayne Co. upgraded their equipment so when I renew next year, I'll get the new style.

Until January of this year, Georgia's used to be a regular sheet of paper that they folded, cut and laminated. Saying it looked like a 5th grader made it in study hall would be severely overstating the case.

A hard plastic 'license' is definitely better, but I wouldn't want one that's tied to my driving license any more than I'd want one tied to my beautician's or horticulturist's license.

Well, it should be coming down the pike soon. Here in Oregon, for years, they'd issue some cheap paper with a pixelated "photo" that'd probably want to be laminated. Now, it's all fancy times.

I always wondered why they just don't combine the DL and the CHL on to one card. Here in Texas are CHL look pretty much just like are DL do.

Or do you think I could get away with using just my CHL for a DL because it has both license numbers on it and all the same information?

Just like a DL here in WV. And with a handy list of states on the back that honor our permits. Unfortunately, it's out of date and only lists 19 of the 31 states (32 if it was issued after 6/18 for Wisconsin) that recognize our permits now.

The old PA ones were paper as well, and they'd laminate the picture YOU gave them on the back.

At my most recent update, they've updated to high-speed credit-card type printers right there in the Sheriff's office. Made while you wait!

The WA permits are oversized too, so they won't fit where a credit card or a license will. :( Whenever I'm issued a new one I very carefully fold it and trim as much off the edges as possible with scissors without trimming off any writing. I also radius the corners a bit. Then have it laminated at Kinko's (FedEx Office, whatever). Ask them to put it through the heater deal a second time after it cools down, this makes a huge difference! I trim the laminate so there's at least 1/8" of clear all the way around and radius the corners so they don't cut through my wallet over the following years. Mine have all held up really well and I'm active and relatively hard on all of my gear.

In IA, you pay $50 for a paper permit of $55 for a hard plastic credit card sized ID. My only complaint is that the picture wears off fast.

Guess us Arkies aren't so bass-ackwards after all...my CHCL is similar to my DL and uses the same pic...but I still had to get inked.

I paid the extra to have mine laminated. You can always DIY laminate it.

I'm from Oregon, moved to Washington a couple of years ago.

My Oregon permit was pretty cool. Looked like a DL, and even had a nifty 3d holographic anti-counterfeit thingy that looked like an NAA guardian.

My WA permit by contrast was a simple piece of paper that they used a typewriter to input my info onto. Very low-tech. On the bright side the WA permit was easier to obtain than the OR one was (not training requirements)

While living in Telluride, Colorado, I briefly worked at an office supply store that also did laminating and reproductions, etc. It was located two doors from the courthouse. Every now and then someone would come in and ask us to turn on the "card size" laminating machine and say they'd be right back. I'm pretty sure someone at the courthouse told the applicant how to do this. Sure enough, ten minutes or so later they'd be back to get a CCW permit laminated. I was amazed at how many people carried guns, or were at least permited, in that liberal hippy town. The Colorado permits are like the drivers license now.
