Has marketing taken over?

I'm all for ground blinds since I fell from a stand 2 years in a row. First year I had no harness and fell 12 feet into mud and landed flat on my back. No real injuries...pure luck. Second year, same stand, same tree, had a harness on and went to sleep trusting the harness to protect me from myself...woke up when I face planted the tree and thought I had done irreparable damage to my groin. No cell signal, can't reach steps for ladder....hung around until dark hoping my family would come looking for me if they saw my truck, but they were out of town for dinner. Pulled knife, cut harness, fell again. Not an experience I'm willing to repeat. I will pay what it costs or build my own. I can build a bunch for 4 grand.

I guess that for me, knowing that I can get equal effectiveness for a heckuva lot less money, the word "silly" comes to mind, bringing a head shake and laughter. It's not the price; it's the actual value that's important to me.

Lotsa "stuff" that I could easily afford, but I wouldn't feel that I was really getting what I believe would be my money's worth.

But if somebody has fun making something like that stump and can find a sucker to buy it, fine by me. :D

You can ascertain a lot about a person just listening to them talk about money and how much things cost. Good and bad. I just find it very interesting the attitudes people have towards things they cannot (or would not) "afford". Proletentiousness is something I don't care for but notice quite often.

Carry on.....

I did not know what Proletentiousness meant, so I Googled it. Couldn't find it. All that came up was pretentious. One definition for that was.....

pretentious
Trying to sound intelligent by using long, complicated words, even though you don't know what they mean.

Big difference between cannot and would not afford. If those with enough pocket change that $4000 for a ground blind is a realistic buy, and are as intelligent and wise as you claim, then they would pass on that blind also. They could see as easily as most of the other posters here that the blind is too small to swing a rifle easily in if one was following a deer or turkey with it and the windows are too small with too much space in between. While it's pretty as all getout, for 4 grand one could get something just as esthetically pleasing, but much more practical. Even for folks that can afford one, it is not really worth what they are asking. While they certainly can afford one, they probably would not buy one. A subjective opinion, but based on years of experience of hunting and using blinds. Deer, Turkeys and any other game animal I have ever hunted or even seen hunted, cared little about how much a blind looked like a tree. All they cared about is that it blended in with the surroundings, did not appear out of place and had been there for a while. Plywood boxes in the woods work just as well as blinds made completely outta brush. Not an opinion based on income, but outta using both. How many of us have parked a truck on one side of a field and then hunted the other side thinking it would spook the animals in our direction only to watch deer/turkeys feed around the vehicle far outta range?

That blind was designed by those that know little about hunting for others that know little about hunting. Has nuttin' to do with net worth.

I had to laugh when I read this. SEVERAL times I've come back to my truck only to have it surrounded by doe feeding on acorns. It was one of those "you've got to be kidding me" type of moments.

I know people that pay $2500 for an enclosed stand that I could build for $300 in materials.
I personally think it's a good idea. Would I buy one for myself? Heck no! Would I buy one to give to a friend that is getting "old" and has trouble climbing up a ladder to hunt? Probably but just because it would be a hoot. Last year I paid to get a squirrel mounted for a "special" occasion so I can't make fun of people for spending stupid money.
There are plenty of people out there that can drop $4k on this and not even think about it. I have hunted in blinds with heaters and recliners. In the 70s and 80s I routinely hunted on a 2x4 between two trees and sat there for hours. Up until 5 years ago I usually hunted from a climber but rarely do that anymore. Those enclosed stands have a lot going for them.

"Reverse snobbery".

As in, when folks feel the need to poke fun at things that cost more than they would be willing to pay. Folks that look down their noses at high dollar items (cars, guns, houses, anything) and assume a position of moral superiority. All the while claiming to be smarter and shrewder than those with more money with phrases like "more money than sense" or "folks with money they don't know what to do with". It comes up on these forums all the time, whether the discussion is about custom grips, custom guns, engraving, fancy finishes or anywhere else and the discussion is about expensive cars, houses, furniture, etc., etc.. It's generally followed with rhetoric about how something somebody built or some cheap item somebody bought is "just as good". How their Hogue is "just as good" as Fishpaw. Or how their Stevens is "just as good" as a Purdey. A used Savage is "just as good" as a Cooper or Dakota. Or that their old Chevy is "just as good" as a Cadillac/BMW/Mercedes, etc.. Or condescending use of words like "pretty". I've had more than one person use the "more money than sense" comment about my three reloading presses, with room for several more. My response is, "no, I have more money than time".

I just see crap like this as no more productive than Obama's class war. Just another way for one person to judge another without regard for the content of their character.

I reckon the guy in the Mercedes looking down on the guy in the old Chevy is being a snob; but the guy in the old Chevy looking down on the guy in the shiny new Mercedes as "having more money than sense" is just doing his civic duty. I see no difference between the two.

Sorry, I didn't mean to interrupt the party. Please continue judging & alienating people. Just try not to think about who might be laughing loudest. Carry on.....

Once again we are back to George Carlin's driving example...

"Anyone driving faster than me is an idiot and anyone driving slower than me is a moron."

Caliber corollary
"Anyone using a bigger caliber than me is an idiot and anyone using a smaller caliber than me is a moron" (as applied to hunting a given animal or set of animals)

Gear corollaries
"Anyone spending more than me is an idiot and anyone spending less than me is a moron."

"Anyone with more gear than me is an idiot and anyone with less gear than me is a moron."

"Anyone with more gear on their rifle than me is an idiot and anyone with less gear on their rifle is a moron."

The list is endless, right. We tend to judge people by the standards to which we hold ourselves because we know what is right, only the failing is that what we 'know' to be right might be right for us, but we fail to realize that what is right for us isn't necessarily right for others.

Does it really matter to you what somebody else paid for their gear? Does that affect your life in some way? So what if somebody buys a $3K blind. Granted, if you put a few of them on your property, you will look like Hobbitville, but if that is what somebody likes for their hunting property, does that affect you? Why do you care?

More money than sense? Really? You never bought something because you liked it? Not because it was the cheapest or most effective, but because you liked it. Sure you did. You probably make such biased decisions numerous times a month. That would make you having more money than sense.

will fool even the keenest eye, human or wildlife
Hmmm, I don't know about the rest of you, but a plastic tree stump big enough for a hunter to sit inside complete with windows isn't fooling my eye. I think I'll pass, regardless of the price.

I don't think the blind is a waste IF you can afford the thing. Some of the people at the range lose more money on the depreciation of their cars than some people earn in a year. I can't afford those kind of and number of cars myself.

I dunno Craig....I can't see much of difference. Maybe the old garbage can wasn't such a bad idea.

buck460XVR:

Say, buck460XVR, PM me. I got $5,000.00 what's burnin' a hole in my pocket, an' I wanna buy 'hat trash bucket for a deer blind. Do me a favor, an' add a spritz o' black, brown, green and white spray paint, an' I'll kick in an additional $1,000.00 for your efforts. Just cuz I'm such a nice fella, I'll give you an additional $20,000.00 if you will deliver 'hat trash can, an' set-it-up on my deer plot. :neener:

For 3900 bucks, the blind had better be elevated, have metal stares, not a ladder, be insulated and sound insulated so I can fart and not scare deer, be big enough for 2 and maybe a cot for naps. :D

Actually, I've not seen many NICE elevated blinds for more'n 2500 or so. I'm sure there are some out there, though. There's a local guy that sells just the base, you build your own box on top, for a couple grand. Don't know what happened to that pic of the guy shooting from a hot tub. THAT was the ultimate stand. :D

I see nothing new here. People have made their livings for generations selling other people crap they don't need by convincing them otherwise, and this is simply a continuation of that.

You mean like more guns and ammo? If we only bought what we needed, we would not have a lot of things. We buy a lot of what we want, not just what we need. Funny how we will often justify what we want as things that we need.

Yep, that is a really nice ground blind. Gave me a great idea for my very own redneck ground blind though.

Been wondering what to do with my numerous 6-10 foot sections of plastic 42" diameter sewer pipe. i'll make an entrance door and shooting windows, put a top in the thing and apply camouflage paint.
