Have a Pistol Under Your Pillow?

I have never kept a gun under my pillow, too dangerous. I do always have one within reach though. Things had to change a little when we had the baby, I have to keep the gun out of reach of my 3 year old now. This means I have to roll out of bed and stand up to get at the gun.

For those without children I would recomend a cheap holster attached between the headboard and the mattress that would allow easy access without the prospect of accidentally hitting the trigger in your sleep.

I keep the Mossberg on the side of the mattress along the wall, chamber empty and my Makarov holster strapped to the bottom of my bed parallel to the mattress, takes two seconds to reach under and pull the gun out and it never points at me.

I live in a studio apartment, so I sleep in the same room as my only window and my front door -- and no dogs -- so instant access is mandatory...

I keep a loaded pistol in a GunVault on my nightstand. Takes a couple of seconds to punch in the code. I've got a sheathed Ka-Bar under the pillow, plus bats/batons beside the bed.

My dogs are eager guardians, and my house has a pretty decent alarm system. The layers allow me to not have to keep a loaded pistol under my pillow.

IMO under pillow is not a good place.

I have mentioned before and still say same . best place for me is on the floor ... almost but not quite under the bed .... oriented so that muzzle points to foot of bed and grip is presented for an easy pick up .... simply by dropping arm down side. It keeps gun out of sight pretty much and it is only there when I am. On getting up it goes back in holster.

When I lived alone in a studio apartment I had my matress on the floor in the back part of the studio. It was actually like a tiny 1 room apartment in a way. I just kept my 38 in a holster between the bed and the wall. Now I'm married, I keep my 45 in the top drawer. It's only about 3 feet from me. I have 3 dogs so if anyone breaks into the house I will be alerted. My big dog might even take of the problem before I get out of bed. He doesn't take kindly to strange people in his house. Thankfully I live in a low crime area.

I toss and turn way too much to have a gun in the bed, not that I would want to anyways. I got a CZ-52 in a holster attached to the bed frame on the side and a BHP in the dresser drawer about one foot from me. Other guns in the closet and a baseball bat and SKS under the bed. Couple of flashlights in the dresser and cell phone on top of the dresser.

I keep my S&W 629 right next to my pillow. It is loaded with .44 Special Gold Dots. I can't sleep without my gun nearby.

Under the pillow? No way, I move around too much, so there's one in the night stand and one in a gunvault in the closet 4' away. I have slept (such as it was) with a holstered sidearm in a flapped holster or sholder rig with thumb-break, but that wasn't 'normal circumstances'.

I 'come to' pretty quickly when I wake, but even under the best of curcumstances, I think having to make a few conscious, deliberate, but simple moves to get to your gun makes things a lot safer, at least for me (and the cat):D

Hello everyone, very new here and glad to be. Now I'm not saying what this guy did was right but,I do rember sleeping with my rifle all the time when I was in the army. I never carried a pistol but I know many who did. I had my rifle tied to a dummy cord attached to my belt not that I got much sleep when I was in :) I bet there are plenty Fine American troops right now sleeping with there firearm.Ok all I'm really tring to say that it is possible to do without getting shot.If you get down to the nitty gritty of it the man that got shot or anyone that gets shot with there own weapon while sleeping has a detail of the story the never tell;) Hey its great to be here!

I'm a little late to this thread ( as usual, ah the joy of working nights!) but, IIRC some time last year there was a thread on GT about a gal who was attacked in her sleep. She reached over and grabbed the gun that was under her husband's pillow, the rapist was on top of her trying to bite her chest, and she was able to get a quick shot off. She wasn't sure if she hit him or not as he left quickly after the shot. I will try and find that thread as it is a very interesting read. Anyway I just thought I would throw this out , certainly in that case having a gun close by and ready probably saved her life.

Pillow gun

I have a holster that has a tab that slips between the box spring and mattress. That is where my S&W 25-5 (45Colt) is kept. I used to keep it in the night table about two feet away, then one night my dog woke me up, she was looking at the bed room door her hair was standing on end and she was growling, not very loud, as if she were trying to warn me.My blood actually ran cold. I couldnt get to that gun fast enough!.....Well I wont bore you with the rest of the story,Ijust wanted you to know why ai keep my gun close. Mike

Yes. Something along the lines of Thefumegator's setup.

However, I'm single, no dogs, etc. The only creatures I have around to warn me of intruders are dust bunnies, and they're pretty quiet, no matter who's here.

For later in life when I'm married (I guess that'll happen one day....), I'll probably switch to the holster-by-the-headboard method for easy access for both. For you folks who do that, how, exactly, do you do that? Do you have a holster screwed to the headboard, or is it attached some other way?

Used to keep a shotty over the door on the inside of my closlet, but now that I CCW (well most of the time, I work for the USPS. ) it's either on my hip or on the floor next to the bed, but never under the pillow.

I keep my shotgun leaned against the wall next to the headboard & a handgun in the bed stand drawer. If I were to sleep with a handgun under my pillow sooner or later I'd be using the gun AS a pillow & that can't be safe.

Movie quotes... uh-oh...

"Tell me, James... do you still sleep with a gun under your pillow?"
-Tomorrow Never Dies

And also one from Desperado with Steve Buschemi criticizing Antonio Banderas for such a thing saying "One of these days, you're going to lay down too hard and blow your head off."

As for me: Used to, but before I knew better and with a BB pistol. Now, the shottie sleeps under the bed. The AK is in the corner.

Not me, toss around WAY too much. Usually am looking for my pillow in the middle of the night.
Besides, wife would use it on me and think I was nuts.

Have a 3 yr old so don't feel comfortable w/ it in the night stand w/in reach of little hands.
Have a key-pad safe mounted at eye level in the closet and make it a habbit to keep the safe unlocked when home/asleep to speed access if needed.

I sleep with an Uzi sub gun under my bed, a Glock 19 with M3 light on my bedstand, and a Remington 11-87 Police in my closet.

No. I toss and turn so much it wouldn't be there when I needed it in the middle of the night.

An Army MP friend had told me that some US army troops in hostile locales sleep with their weapon under or in their rack and in hand. I couldn't swear whether he was jerking my chain or not - I'll bet there are a number of board members who can verify or dispute that one.

If you are in a hostile fire zone your weapon doesn't leave your side. It does have to be cleared before you enter buildings though.

To illustrate it, below is a picture of my old unit 1/293 INF out out Indiana having church in Iraq.

Greeting's All-

I used to sleep with the .45 caliber SIG-SAUER P220A
under my pillow; but its been moved to the night stand.
I really never had a problem with weapon location; cuz
my sub concious mind always knew where the weapon
was! :uhoh:  :D
