I'm 37. I was born in 1970 so I didn't really see alot of the originating actions that occured to get us where we are now. I think though that it has alot to do with the More is Better idea that the collective consious has at times. It started with the GCA's to control the crime gangs during the depression era. back in the day, from the histories I've read, you could get a Thompson or a BAR relatively easy. Not quite as easy as going to the local store, but you could get one.... Then later on it was expanded upon(if that was good, then doing X, Y, and Z also would be even better). THen we had a rash of well publicized and world changing executions that brought the public eye to people who probably shouldn't have been allowed to own or possess firearms in the first place. If mot by law, then at least by common sense of family and friends around them. So came GCA'68. Then after the cultural 60's, 70's and 80's ideas of "ME" and who are you to tell me I am doing wrong(even if I am) began to further our rush down the river of fecal demise. Political correctness spread faster than any epidemic plague or cancer known. It has rotted our constitution, and our society as a whole. Those with the courage to stand up for what is right and speak out against the wrongs with this land are now looked upon like a fascist or conspiracy nut and relegated to the fringe. We need therapy to deal with every day life we have allowed our inate couping mechanisms to whither on the vine.

I won't continue this now, it's becoming more a rant than the simple answer I had originally invisioned....

But then again.........I could be totally off on the idea.

It's all just Rock 'n' Roll: "...change the world, rearrange the world...", "...don't go along with the program jus' 'cause ever'body say its right...", "...imagine all the people living life at peace...", "...soldiers are shooting us down...", "...put a flower in your hair...you'll find gentle people there...", "...give peace a chance...". Not that I am agin RnR, it's the soundtrack of my life, but I think the many pacifist, nihilist and socialist messages contained in many of the hits played a larger role than generally acknowledged in the general spine-ectomy of the boomer generation.
Having grown up in the 50s and 60s ... arguably the hey-day of rock-n-roll ... I don't consider ANY of the songs you cite as being rock-n-roll songs.

while watching pinocchio (i hadn't seen it for at least 30 years) with my daughter, it came to my attention that even kid cartoons from fifty years ago promoted the right to bear arms.

It was just a cartoon. Get over it. Otherwise, you have to recognize the fact that such cartoons also promoted witchcraft, sexism, racism, interpersonal violence, cheating, shooting one another, terrorism and a whole host of other behaviors not considered to be positive. Otherwise, they were chalk full of good American values.

And news reporters can't (or don't, whichever) distinguish between PEOPLE and THINGS.

Examples:
Any time you hear about a car chase or traffic accident, reporters will say something like "An SUV crashed into a street light," or "a small compact car was trying to get away from police."

Um. Well, no. The DRIVERs did all that. Not the cars -- I've never seen a car drive itself into a tree or try to make a getaway.

I've noticed this myself.. and it's frustrating as all Hell. Can't say it any better than my fellow Texan has..
