I'm going to have to say neither and buy a steel framed pistol like a 1911. It's nice to have a Glock with a high capacity double stack magazine with 15 or more rounds but in a combat situation where sand and grit can get in the magazine and jam it up, you will wish you had a single stack magazine. The weak point on ANY semiautomatic pistol or rifle for that matter is the magazine. It may be less rounds but if you have lots of rounds and cannot fire them and the other guy can you got a problem on your hands. I didn't mean to make this sound like a lecture or anything, and I'm sure Glocks are great pistols, but I just do not like polymer framed pistols or any DAO pistol for that matter. Why would I want a double action only? To me, if you're spending all that money why not get a gun that fires in single action also. I like a gun that has an exposed hammer and a hammer safety or a decocker option like the newer model CZ pistols have. The Czechs take their pistols very seriously and if I was going to buy a good moderately priced handgun I would look at a CZ 85 type pistol because its totally ambidextrous and i am a lefty. It all depends on what YOU need in a pistol. Don't buy the first gun you see or the first brand. Try a variety of pistols and see if you still want a Glock 17 or 19.
Pistolero, you will find very few people that discredit Glock magazines. There aren't a lot of after market mags for Glock simply because the factory ones are so good. Besides, 1911 single staxk mags aren't flawless, and in fact people make their living building after market mags to correct the issuea. Certainly they are more delicate than Glock mags, even if only by a matter of degree.
I had a G26, sold it didn't like the small grip even with a Pearce extension. I don't like the G19 that much either, right now I have a G17 and G20 which are better handguns than either the 26 or 19... my EDC is a Springfield Ultra Compact in 45ACP... Get the G17, much better handgun than the other 2
I CC a 17 and have found the 19 and 26 just too small to fit my hand well.
I actually have looked hard at the 19, I really want to like it. I even considered cutting a 17 grip down to 19 diamensions just make CC a bit easier, the 19 grip just never felt right.
I voted 19 as it was behind by a few why not get both? I need a 26 to complete my 9mm glock family. The bonus is I have all kinds of spare/backup parts for my glocks and none are over used
I was in the same mode. Looked at 19 and 17 every chance that I got. Held many at gunshows and dealer counters. The 19 was sure nice, but the 17 was just as nice. Ran across a range that had a gen 4 17 and rented it. Just perfect for me. Ordered one the next day, no regrets.
Planned to change out the sights, but the factory sights are working well for me, so not sure if I will get around to that or not. Put about 1500 rounds through it and ammo cost is all that kept the count down to that number.
It will not replace the 26 for carry or for night stand duty, must it does get shot more.
I wasn't a Glock fan until I fired the 17. My wife is a novice shooter at best, and she shot it very well, commenting how comfortable it was while shooting it. The concealed niche is covered with the 26, go with the 17. I plan to buy one soon as well.
Actually the 19 is much closer to 17, there's only 1/2" difference in length each way. 26 is much smaller than both.
If you can comfortably hold 19 go for it for added portability, but otherwise the difference between the two isn't worth any discomfort. They are just too close in size.
I voted for 17 because the 34 wasn't a choice. G19 is an AWESOME comprimise and a great gun if you are going to have only one, but if you already have the 26 for CCW, the 34 is perfect for HD, OC, or range/ competition.
I can't stand full size Glocks. They just don't feel right, don't really balance, blah. I love my compact G23 and almost bought the subcompact. I vote the G19
I would also suggest the 34. The 26, as you already know, shoots exceptionally well. You aren't losing anything from the shorter grip, and you can always get a few 19 magazines and some sleeves if you decide you'd like to embiggen your 26 here or there.
Don't get a bunch of different carry guns, when you've already got an ideal one. Add something significantly different, but similar enough to gain all the benefits of familiarity and parts commonality. G34.
Hi Guys - thank you so much for the continued responses and advice.
Would it be crazt to go for a G23 and just buy the conversion barrel? I'm thinking this may give me a lot of bang for the buck... then give me an excuse to buy a G17 or G34 later
Haven't been able to give it much more thought as I'm currently focusing on our puppy who has parvo... so we will see if there is even any $$$ left for a new Glock after this nightmare to begin with.
But, the pup is a little fighter and kicking ass so far
