Have you ever felt like you have too many firearms?

Ironically, I mainly buy now BECAUSE of the anti-gun movement, and concerns about not being able to buy as easily or affordably or even at all in the future.

In my lifetime, we've been told we can't own high capacity magazines and certain rifles and shotguns, there have been import bans on certain guns and ammo. Gun prices have spiked a handful of times to treble their previous prices, and supplies gone to zero for magazines and ammo at times. Face-to-face transactions have been eliminated in a number of states, putting a premium on those guns I've previously purchased face-to-face (now it requires a bit more hassle and cost - previously the transaction was local and 5 minutes at the parties convenience. Now it's a 30 minute ordeal, $25 added fee, and only when you both can meet at an FFL - so business hours only).

Sure, many of these laws were (barely) repealed or sunset, and some may be changed in the future.

But I am extremely pessimistic about gun rights perpetually in the balance, so I buy and rarely part with one unless it's a trade. I put a personal premium on anything falling into the "ban" category like military style weapons, steel core ammo, and high capacity mags for these reasons.

Yes, but after a few minutes the feeling passes..... after all, how can you have too much fun or money?

While I don't feel I have too many, I do see that I don't get to shoot enough to get to all of them...even on a yearly basis. That is bothersome. I mean, you (we), can't take all of them to the range every trip! :D I'm in a no win situation. and my wife has noticed. I have heard the dreaded "you only take two to shoot! Why don't you just sell all the others?" :what::eek: So I started a chart to see who gets the "field trip" and who doesn't. Sad to say...she may be right...but it AIN'T gonna happen! :neener:

I have more than I could ever justify needing, but nowhere near what I want.

But to answer your question, no. That has never entered my mind, ever.

I don't know if I have enough but I have enough so as at times I dig around in a safe and find one I forgot I had, I guess that's a good thing isn't it.

Not "too many" per se but certainly I have unneeded ones that just take up space. I could sell them, but there's always that "eh, maybe someday I'll use this" voice in the back of my mind. I don't actively seek to increase the number.

I think the line is crossed when you are unable to care for (or properly store) your collection and it begins to take harm that wouldn't happen if you had fewer to care for. Of course that can be a changing target as life throws curves our way.

I haven't hit that point myself, but if I thought it was a possibility I'd start selling.

Thanks for the replies. I'm sure many of you wouldn't consider my numbers as "too many", but it just seems like I have more than I should. Just 6 rifles and 9 pistols [as soon as the Glock 43 comes in].

In my case it is just the opposite. That giant sucking sound you hear is me paying for a wedding, finishing a basement and mancave project and long other overdue home projects.

I keep telling myself that maybe later this year I'll have the money to feed my gun habit.

Guns, no. Reloading stuff, no. Ammunition oh dear lord yes. 5 gallon buckets of 357, 9mm, 30-30, and a bucket that was half 7-30 and half .270win, plus box after box of factory ammo and reloads packed into factory ammo trays. Stairs become the enemy very quickly. I'm still looking for a good source of 3 gallon buckets. Then, after that goes the 600 pound monstrosity of a safe....at least I only have 1 safe, and in my next house I will have a vault.

You're just getting started. IMO that's far far far from feeling like one is even approaching too many.

For instance, any starting reasonable collection should have 5-10 guns just to have the basics covered (shotguns, rifles, and handguns).

A lesson I've learned which applies to June 2015. Buy them now because guns have never been cheaper versus the value of the dollar than today.

ARs are $600-700
AKs are $400-600
New and lightly used handguns are in the $300-600 mark
Magazines for common guns are in the $10-20 range

This has also caused the floor to fall out of the price of used guns

I can't see how prices could go lower.

Obviously the question is clouded in my case, after having presented many of my firearms to friends and relatives (one just does not sell his prized possessions) there are only 150-200 left in the safes for my enjoyment. But to be honest i have aspirations of sharing quite a few of the stash with friends in an effort to have the enjoyment i experienced passed on to others before my days become shorter. Firearms and 55' Chevy's have shared a great part of my life, who could ask for more in the way of toys?

No.

leadcounsel expressed about half of my motivation, because of totally irrational politicians who would ban most/all imported guns, ammo, and most of the domestic varieties. Most of mine are bolt action rifles, no ARs, AK sporters etc. I've sometimes considered an AK clone, merely to Spite the more rabid east/left coast elitist politicians.

My only self-loading sport utility rifles are two SKS and two Garands.
The motivation in buying surplus Makarovs and the CZ-82 (maybe soon a Polish P-83) is partly to have a good long-term selection of handguns with solid, compact construction and reliability, but also staying a step ahead of the politicians who are anti-US Constitution.

I have felt that feeling at times, but it passes. I certainly have guns I don't need for my present usage, but I bought them for a reason and that reason may rear its ugly head again. I am not actively buying, but I do still get the urge from time to time. Knives help keep my firearm acquisition feelings at bay.

Nope. Almost. When I start forgetting what I have I may stop.
I was looking at a 6" 686 the other day and was pretty sure I already had one at home:evil:. I knew I had an 8 3/8" and two 4". Lucky I didn't buy it because I did have one.....maybe I should go back and see if it's still there.
Then I could find another 8 3/8 and have 2 of each. But then I would need two 2 1/2" to have a complete set. :p

I never felt like I had too many guns! But due to arthritis I now have a lot of guns that I can't use due to the strength in my hands and the fact that the large caliber guns hurt my hands too much. So I'm selling off my big hand guns(44,41mag, etc). Also due to arthritis I no longer am able to deer hunt so I've sold off some of my rifles, not because I have to but because I would like to put them in some one's hands that will use and enjoy them as much as I have. There are a few that I will never let go of, my wife will have to deal with them when I'm gone. I've also sold off most of my excess brass and I'm working on my reloading stuff. My problem is that I bought up a bunch of supplies during the shortage and Now I have a over abundance of primers and no way to move them.

Ed Ames, . . . . I don't know, I just feel like it is a lot, . . . but I suppose it's a matter of perspective.

Well, I am becoming more selective, especially with the shotguns and rifles.

I purchase most of my firearms with an activity in mind, usually hunting. Also, shotguns for clays etc. I do not really collect historical firearms.

The gunsafe is getting pretty crowded for the long guns. I need to purchase a quality sporting clays O / U next.

There is always room for another pistol, my pistol count is pretty low.

I guess another gunsafe could be purchased?
