Ok, I'm sorry if this has been covered before. I did a search but it came up empty.

Lots and lots of posts talk about many different aspects of self defense. Just read the posts; which gun should I get, which ammo is the best, Best CCW gun, best stopping power, Bad guy this and bad guy that.

Has anyone here actually used whatever you do carry or keep at home to shoot another person? No need to get into gory details, "just the facts ma'am". What was the situation and what was the result (phyisically, psychologically)?

Guys, while this question has been asked before, this is The High Road, I suggest you either answer the question or simply hit your back button.

As for the question, no, I haven't, but I have had to shoot at the ground in someone's general area. One shot was enough to scare the idiot away...

Just a quick recap of the previous threads on the topic:

Question gets asked.

An immediate series of "IBTLs".

Then folks jumping on the OP demanding why he wants to know.

Then some wordy "Scarred warrior with a past" types pretending to be insulted by the question...

...which go hand-in-hand with the "We don't talk about that sort of thing here, son" posts soon to follow.

Throw in a couple of dumb jokes, a handful of extravagant lies from the 13-year-old contingent, and one or two actual attempts at providing information, and you've got yourself this week's "Have you ever shot anyone" thread.

HTH!

no ive shot several people with a red ryder and also lodged a bb in my own finger with a "triathalon" 15 years ago 450 fps

In before The Lock, and I got an IBTL in too!
It basiclly means you're really cool and love to post about the original question in the thread. If you get a lot of them, it means you spend a lot of time on a forum.

Well, I follow the rules of gun safety. assume a gun is loaded, never point at anything you don't want shot.

So.... never wanted to shoot anyone. Hope I never have to.

I shot some one in the head at 30 yards, blow gun made with a section of copper pipe and an acorn........does that count?

OP, while I don't have a problem with you asking, I do doubt you will get many affirmative answers, and those that you do will probably just be "yes" and that's it. Using deadly force against someone is a hard thing to talk about, especially off the cuff on an internet forum. If I were you, I would phrase your question maybe more in relation to books or other sources that have the information you need. A book or other publication will probably be by someone who has come to grips with the situation and is OK with talking or writing about it. I'm not familiar with Ayoob's books, but perhaps someone here can recommends one that speaks about situations where people have had to fire their weapons?

As for all of the IBTL, I think it's kind of silly, as the OP said, that we talk about every other aspect of firearms and their use, including in self defense, but refuse to talk about what happens inside you after the fact. Using a firearm in a real life situation is not all about penetration statistics, state laws, and knowing a good lawyer. We talk about that stuff every day. I know that the psychological aspect of shooting another person is touchy, but for a website that prides itself on being informative and accurate, why is an entire realm of discussion off limits?

Maybe an extention of that question should be are you mentally prepaired to shoot someone if you have to. I relize nobody can answer that question truthfully unless they have been in that position. I would like to think I would not hesitate, but who knows.

look around for the story of the older gent from Louisville Ky (I believe) that was attacked in one of his rentals.
There are videos around of his interview too.

He was very disturbed by being forced into a situation that required him to fight for his and his wife's lives.
You can learn from that gent.

anyway, what one should center attention on is the avoidance of any situation that would force you to make that decision.
Taking a life is serious business and will scar the person forced to do so irreparably for life.
It will destroy another person's life and family forever too.

Using a firearm is a last resort, not a first reaction.
Don't put yourself in harms way and remain alert of your surroundings and you will never need to find out just how devastating protecting yourself may become.

oh yeah...IBTL

Unless BB/Paintball/Airsoft guns count then thankfully the answer is no.

One of my friends and my neighbor growing up were both veterans of war (friend in Iraq and neighbor in Vietnam) who had killed in the act of war. Neither would talk about it much and both had some pretty big mental problems as a result. My friend was able to work through it and seems to live a normal life. My neighbor wasn't so fortunate and he committed suicide apparently over grief/guilt around 12 years ago or so.

I did a search and I don't know why but it didn't come up with anything. Thank you to those who have offered some accounts. I apologize for the post if it appears to be distasteful. Maybe I should have phrased it differently but I meant no disrespect and the question was not asked lightly. I realize that the effects and aftermath of such an action can be devastating. I wasn't asking for details just for a basic overview of cause and effect. As someone who often contemplates the possibility of having to actually use his weapon in defense of his life, I would appreciate some insight and perspective from people who have walked in those shoes. I realize it's a heavy subject but I think it needs to be discussed from time to time without going into details that would be legally risky. I think that too much talk about hardware without talking about "software" is unbalanced. State of mind pre and post incident is such an important subject but nobody wants to discuss it. I realize that you get all types of yahoos on message boards. Some are very serious and some are not. I don't know as much as many of the people that post here but I am serious and the question was not just an attempt to go fishing for some gory stories. I can see why people don't want to talk about it though and for those reasons I apologize.

Thankfully no

I had been in situations twice where I really wished I had a gun, I was able to run like #$(* to get out of said situations.

Now I have a bad back, so running is not a option anymore. Thus, I will be carrying a gun.
