Have you ever shot anyone?

No. I've asked this question before and got about the same responses. Mods must be sleeping today if it's not locked out yet.

It's not a good subject to talk about on THR. An actual shooting is a messy situation very few want to relive.

Hmmmm

24 years Infantry retired; 'nam 65-66, so my answer is yes.

As a civilian, no; would I, in a heart beat to protect my family and/or myself. Do I want to, no. Do I carry, every time I walk out my door, I have a handgun on my person, locked and loaded!

Now to apologize, being new in this forum, I do not understand the IBTL terminology. Someone please explain, thank you!

"In Before The Lock".

Shorthand for "I have nothing to contribute but I'm not going to let that stop me."

WHY do YOU want to know this information?

I thought the OP explained that very well in his post.

I am also seeing that this thread (or at least this re-incarnation of it) has actually be handled very tactfully, and ( if we're not careful) we may actually learn something before it's through.

This is my personal opinion and I hope it doesn't offend anyone.

I suspect that the " brooding, scared, man-with-a-past" types are more looking for attention than expressing their angst over taking another's life if, indeed, they ever have.

W/ the exception of the example I gave, I'm not hearing that anyone particularly enjoyed the experience. I'm hearing more that they did what the circumstances dictated and dealt W/ the aftermath to the best of their ability.

My apologies to those of you who have had objections to my thread. I never intended any disrespect or to make light of a very serious subject. But it is because it is so serious that I sought the experiences and wisdom of others here at THR. I explained from the start that I wasn't interested in gory details. I was only interested in whether or not you had an experience and how you prepared for it or handled it after the fact. Yes, it is a deeply personal issue and people handle it in different ways. If it is too painful for you to talk about it here I understand and respect that. There have been others however, who have shared accounts here or who have sent me PMs. My sincere thanks to those who chose to share their experiences with me. Their words have been very valuable. My idea of being prepared to defend my life doesn't just mean "lock and load". I am trying to get some perspective on whether I am ready mentally and morally. In theory, yes. But the time to think about these complex issues is now, not when I have a gun in my face. Thanks to the Mods who have let the thread go so long. I hope what I have been trying to gain here is not in conflict with the standards of THR.

No, thank God, but I know of people who have in the MILITARY and in police work.

Military - shot and wounded and shot and killed. You could include the USN and Air Force not only Marines and Army in that section. Killed using ALL kinds of military weapons in 'war'. Regular service, Guard and Reserve people. My late husband was a Vietnam Veteran (USN) and later on in the Air NG Fighter Wing along with his NON government job. He served for over 20 years. I have had many friends/relatives in the military - deceased and alive. Retired and still active although most of them are my age (58) and older.

I hope that I NEVER have to USE a gun in a self defense situation but if I need to STOP a crime aka defend myself, my loved one, a friend, a dog if I get another one and/or against a domestic or foreign enemy... I would choose to Stop the Crime for being in FEAR of losing my life or being severely harmed - beat up, knifed, raped, kidnapped, shot or left for dead on the side of the road.

Using a FIREARM for self defense sure beats hitting someone with your high heels, jogging shoes, house slippers and/or in my case against a bigger person.

If all else failed - some used pitch forks during the Revolution!

Nobody ever raped a '38' as the old saying goes.

Sam Colt did make us equal for sure. God created men and Sam Colt made them EQUAL or some such quote!

Discussing one's use of deadly force when the lawsuit window is still open, is a very bad idea. Let's keep in mind that there is NO statute of limitations on murder, anywhere; manslaughter may vary. A person may even be cleared by a grand jury, but a second grand jury can still review the case again, and reach a different conclusion. Because grand juries do not determine innocence or guilt, this is NOT double jeopardy.

Having said all that, anyone who really searched a bit on the internet would know why one of my sixguns is not for sale for any sane amount of money.

Colt - Thankfully I have never been in a situation where I have had to use deadly force. And I certainly realize the intent of your question and that you're not a goremonger searching for details - one thing you have to keep in mind IMO (whatever that's worth!) is that if you are not prepared to use deadly force to protect yourself, then you shouldn't draw your weapon, or even carry one if you have a CHL permit. If there's a bad guy coming at you or wanting to harm or kill you, they won't think twice about it. If you draw your weapon and have doubts about pulling the trigger - you're in big trouble.

So I have no problem with you asking the question because I think it is a valid one when speaking in terms of lethal self defense. Whatever you have to do to erase those doubts is great, and I'm glad that a few here have PM'd you with their experience. I think many out there THINK they could pull the trigger, but since they have never asked themselves that question, maybe not.

As for me, when I took my CHL course, I questioned it - I had never truly thought about it before. But when it comes down to it, if some (nicely put) jerk has no respect for my life, or the life of someone I care about, and feels it is their responsibility to cut my life of the life of someone I care about short, then yeah, I'd be able to pull the trigger, because nothing disgusts me more then some thug who has made the decision that my life is worth less than my wallet, or my car or whatever. I'm not going to let some idiot make that decision without consequences...and that's how I personally have come to that realization. You need to find your own reasons, and until you do, leave your gun locked in the safe.

I pray that I never have to draw my gun, because I know what the next step is. Im not sure if they arcive online but within the first couple pages of "American Rifleman" they have a section called, armed citizen. there are some really good articles there. You will not get the first hand emotional side of the story, but you will get a general idea as to how the situation was handled.

no I have not had to pull mine on anyone but I have thought about it and wether i would be able to pull the triger:banghead: but I believe if you carry a gun the question is always in the back of ur mind and my answer is yes if it comes down to it protecting my loved ones and myself is my top priority and i feel sorry for the one that hold the value of life so low
