Hazmat fees

Having only just recently gotten into reloading, I did not know that components and ammo are now subject to hazmat fees. I ordered 3 1000-unit boxes of primers from an online vendor and the hazmat fee-which I didn't notice until after the order was completed--upped the price by about 10%.

Back in the 90s I ordered thousands of rounds of ammo, delivered through the mail or by parcel carriers, and never had to pay a hazmat fee. My question is, who is responsible for this debacle? Government, or just the shippers? When was it imposed?

No question primers & powder are hazardous. Right? Somewhat surprising (to me anyway) ammo isn’t also considered hazardous.

Bet if you asked most citizens they’d be amazed that any of this floats around like it does. Ignorance is bliss.

So, I’m just happy I can get it shipped to my house and don’t have to drive to Utah.

I don't pay a hazmat fee for loaded rounds. But you will for powder and/or primers.

Our locals are Cabela's and Sportsman's Warehouse. No discount over internet prices but I don't have to pay shipping or hazmat for powder I buy there. But it's a crap shoot, as to whether or not they'll have what I want.

A couple of weeks ago I looked at the Cabela's web site and it said my local had Win 231. I drove the 18 miles to the store, only to be told that they didn't have it.

I buy my supplies local. And they are cheaper than online vendors too.
I went to the indoor range Saturday. I was pleased to see primers on the shelf. Looked at the price tags and was horrified: $95/brick for Remington 1-1/2’s!! I decided I would pass, went and emptied two boxes of 9Mak and went to pay for the lane - and the Remingtons were gone! Somebody or some bodies cleaned them out in the hour I was shooting. I guess $95+tax is a pretty good price.

Yeah, it's crazy now. Loaded ammo is no bargain either.

Remember the days when you could buy all the MilSurp ammo you wanted, for 10 cents (or less) per round? I have more 7.62 X 39 than I'll ever shoot.....not to mention 30-06 and 7.62 X 51.....

It’s gone up, too. Almost one year ago it was $20 and now it’s $23. That’s more than a 10% increase within one year.

Maybe the fee will stop going up for a bit? Maybe it will continue the trend and raise in price during the upcoming year again? One thing I’m sure about is that it won’t go back down.

I want to say it was imposed under the bill clinton 1st administration or it was increased don't remember which
Hazardous Materials Transportation Act (HMTA) became law in 1975...Gerald Ford was president

The law requires training and certification for companies who handle hazardous material. Companies which ship powder and primers have to pay for yearly renewal of the certificates to handle their shipments.

The HazMat fees added to your order is the company a portion of their cost to your order. Back when supplies of powder and primers were abundant, it was not uncommon for vendors to advertise Free Shipping and/or HazMat fees. A few years ago I remember a powder order with fees normally amounting to shipping of $20 and HazMat of $20, but this would vary with vendors.

That's why you try to get as much on one HazMat order as you can...I normally order primers in lots of 10k and powder in two 8lb jugs

I got primers shipped in with no added shipping or hazmat, just www sales tax.
I was leery of a scam so I only ordered 1000 but they came right in.
Poorly packaged, 32 lost in transit.

Indoor range? Didn’t figure you’d do that but don’t know why.

My range sells everything BUT components. Used to have Hornady section.

Similarly doesn’t appear high price slows sales.

I don’t mind paying for highway safety and don’t think it’s highway robbery. When I see a truck wrecked on the news I wonder what stuff was onboard and how much the insurance claim will be and why it didn’t go boom.

I used to double up on hazmat sales too but then the shortage hit and just bought what I could when I could regardless of costs.

Still love the Cabelas ship to store option the best. No fees and no prying eyes.

I always would wait until a vendor had what I wanted in stock to fully max out the weight on an order and either free shipping or HasMat or both. I dream of the day this happens once again but the prices of primers and propellant dropping are a good sign of things to come. Thankfully I had enough put back that I have not had to buy any for the last 3 years or so.

I just bought some powder online that was shipped with a 10% discount, free shipping and no hazmat fees. Not sure how some of this works, but glad it does.

You paid it, just was factored into the price.

Buying primers local is the same, they have to pay hazmat. Just that they buy in large amounts so the fee is absorbed.

I never understood why folks get that upset about hazmat. Just buy as much as you can or the place will allow Just the way it is.

Availability is my nearly sole concern.
