Hazmat fees

Not really—contingency planning, preparing for future possibilities—that’s all. It’s how/what got me loading in the first place.
Interesting how times/situations change one's perception.

When I got into reloading, I was smart enough to buy powder in 8lb jugs and primers in multiples of 5k. When I got more into competition shooting, buying in multiples of 10k seemed pretty natural. I was pretty happy until the local Reloading Club I joined had a guy questioning if he should up his primer stash from 50k to 100k. I couldn't even imagine where I'd put 50k primers...I was mainly using Federal SPP at the time. This was back in the days when sales usually involved free HazMat and/or Shipping

During the current times, I'm down to 25k Genix SPP and 10k Federal and trying to figure out where to put an additional 50k if the prices fall much further. The nice thing about my purchases of Genix SPP is that the vendors I'm using include HazMat and Shipping in the prices they are advertising

I’m at comparable numbers but hadn’t thought about going higher till recently. Prices coming down and gun show coming back have me thinking.

I was advised early on to buy more than I thought I’d ever need but I of course had no point of reference.

Today, living in my tract home suburbs, I use a refrigerator in a nondescript backyard shed to store powders and primers (little bit indoors too). So my limit is fixed by physical capacity and what I’m comfortable with.

There is a Bass Pro near my work. If there is a powder I want to try that the LGS doesn't have. I seach BPs website, if they show it in stock online. I order it and have it shipped to the local BPS. Free shipping, and it's reserved for you. I would think Cabela's would do the same since they're basically the same.
BassPro bought Cabelas. Or rather same hedge fund owns both I think.

I used to do ship to store also, but then they stopped during the pandemic shortages. When they brought back powder ship to store, they didn’t do it for primers. Yet anyway.

I did not know that ... primers ... are now subject to hazmat fees

.....And while I agree someone would like to get into that business, only Elon-type money could buy the planes and other delivery vehicles necessary to do the job.

Bezos paid others to transport & deliver until he could buy his own......
Planes?! C'mon, man! This is the 21st century. Delivery drones are the ticket. Electric, of course, to make the greenies that don't know where electricity comes from happy. ;)

Well certainly no one would be concerned with drones flying around loaded with primers or ammo—seems to be working fine in Ukraine.

Actually saw drone passenger taxis will be ready for village transport at 2024 Olympics.

My way of dealing with the shipping and hazmat fees is to order the max amount that the vendor will ship in one box. Powder Valley will ship powder and primers in the same box and will ship up to 50#. So I get together with a few shooting buddies and order up to 48#. I divide the shipping and hazmat cost by the number of units that we order, i.e., pound of powder/sleeve of primers, ect. The last time I ordered I think the shared cost added about 50cents to each unit.
Hazmat is the same price for 1# of powder as it is for 50#. Divide and concur!

Group buys is a good solution to reduce HazMat and shipping charges.

During the "Great Component Shortage" of 2012 that lasted several years, I had a list of reloaders with preferred choice of powders and primers. As "unobtainium" powders and primers came back in stock, I quickly texted/called for confirmation with the prices and ordered the group buy (Often, items would sell out within 20-30 minutes). Depending on the order, HazMat and shipping charges got reduced to few dollars per person.

Great solution. The NRA range is having a reloading class in August. I’m going primarily to meet like minded souls most of whom are underground in these parts.

That's a good idea. I'll look into it.

If you use Win 244, it is on sale for $25/lb. The cost per pound is higher if you choose the 4lb or 8lb jugs

You'll need to order 6 one pound bottles to get free HazMat
