"He put the public safety of Canadians at risk"

Yes, Canada has restrictive gun laws... But they are actually slightly better than some of our own States, iirc, Canada isn't nearly as moonbat about firearms as the People's Republic of California.

That said, its not as if our Customs Agents and Border Patrol officers would react very nicely to someone coming into this country and lying about having a handgun in their possession. If he "forgot" that he had a loaded handgun in his car, under his seat, well... Then I've got even less sympathy than if he was trying to smuggle it in.

We've got the right to keep and bear arms, not to smuggle them in across the border. Three months, probably all "served" on probation back home in the United States, isn't all that bad considering...

(Incidentally, Michigan law doesn't allow you to transport a loaded handgun in the passenger compartment of a car, so he was breaking one of our laws too. If he had a CCW he could transport it up front, but then I have even more ire for him if he "forgot" where his weapon was.)

He unfortunately did the Canadian crime so he had to do the canadian time. Personaly, I don't know why anyone goes to Canada. Yeah I know there will be people who are going to say "What do you mean, I like Canada?" This is just my opinion. Course you people are few and far between, hehe. Canada doesn't even make a decent beer. My ex-wife is Canadian... that makes a bunch of strikes against em there. I think we ought to annex Canada and turn it into a giant wild life refuge.

well, as Cartman's mom would say...

"Blame Canada! Blame Canada!"

Maybe we'll get lucky and they actually will bomb the Baldwins.

all in good fun if not in good taste.

Canada doesn't even make a decent beer.

OK, you can bash Canadian politics, life, laws all you want. However, you start bashing Canadian beer, or hockey, and I start to take offense. Look up and see blue, man.

And at least we don't have to debate building a big fence with our northern neighbors.

I have no problem with Canada enforcing their laws. It's the penalty that I have a problem with. 3 months in jail for an old man with no criminal history due to .22 mousegun is beyond ridiculous. Confiscate the gun, fine him a $1000, and boot him back across the border with an invitation to never return. That's about as stupid as schools that suspend a kid for having a plastic pistol on a keychain. Idiocy.

I'm guessing that this guy knows what Canadian "prisons" are like and wanted to go on a taxpayer-paid four-star vacation. In his spare time there he'll enjoy some tennis, golf, some movies, excellent food, and maybe even get an associate's degree. Sounds to me like he knew what he was doing.

Funny how all you boys from MI have no problem coming here to Ontario to get our pretty ladies to grind their bare crotches and breasts into them at the "Windsor Ballet". ;) Or to blow loads of money at the Windsor Casino! What morally oppressed laws you have down there...

Seriously, I hate our gun laws (especially our handgun laws) but bringing a loaded handgun into Canada is just plain stupid. I need a license, registration, even a stupid piece of paper that is required for me to take a handgun to a firing range. (and I need to *ask* permission to take it anywhere else, including the border to visit the land of the free)

Believe me, on the flipside, the USA has some pretty stupid rules about just what can or cannot be imported/exported from the USA. Or gun laws that visiting Canadians ignore at their extreme peril. The rules are so complex even your authorities can't comprehend what the law even is. But its your country. Who the hell am I to complain about your gun laws as your guest?

:fire: Anyone else want to try and kick us Canadians while we're down?

PS you should also read between the lines in this article and understand there is a very real effort coming from the Ontario government to outright ban the civilian use of handguns. Of course it will do nothing to stop criminals from obtaining them. The border is so porous, its easy to smuggle handguns across as is commonly done in exchange for drugs, for which there is a huge market in the USA. Indian reserves spanning the border are also a huge smuggling point with no border control to speak of. Our politicians NEED to understand that banning handguns will send us the way of the UK (2x higher violent crime than USA) and will only disarm the law-abiding.

Welcome, mausermike. Believe me, I'm quite capable of blowing my money at Michigan casinos and strip clubs, I just like to do it in Canada every now and then :)

Just curious, what odd things do you have a problem bringing into America? I'm curious, I've never worried about bringing stuff in that I couldn't, as I usually don't bring much back with me.

Formerly real money? The US dollar is at par folks.

Well I don't tend to bring things in to the USA, but exporting is a bit of a problem. It used to be very easy to export guns, gun parts, ammunition, scopes, etc but post 9-11 its gotten to be very tricky. The chance of me getting stopped by US on the way out is slim but the penalties are very stiff. (read: jail, banned from US for life, etc)

As for the Canada haters, you should smarten up and realize that the battleground is here too. If we get a nationwide handgun ban, your own antis will be keen to follow.

Funny, isn’t it? Canadians are so quick to defend the severity of their own laws and yet so quick to condemn ours?

+2 absolutely true.

The big question is have our gun laws actually accomplished anything besides calming the fears of gun hating soccer moms?

Funny how so many Canada haters here don't know what the HE double hockey sticks they're talking about. The loonie (as mentioned before) is about par with the US Dollar.
It is impossible to get to the border without knowing you aren't supposed to have a gun. He knew he was breaking the law. He could have declared it and had the opportunity to return to the States.
We can't give Canada back to anyone because it is not ours.
We get a very large percentage of our wood and wood byproducts from Canada( lumber for our homes and lots of T.P.)

If the gentleman (I use the term loosely) in question had attempted to "smuggle" the gun into NY City what would his penalty be? Or Chicago? Boston?

I sure can't understand why some folks can be so "low road" here on the high road.

You’re too late, mike. The U.K./Australian gun laws already have our anti’s slobbering all over themselves in rabid anticipation.

The only reason we have for going to Canada is the extra buying power real money has there...

Get out much?

Not since Canada (who seems to feel it's vast ammount of open land is somehow more valuable than the comparitively small ammount of it here) decided to use NAFTA to force Michigan to accept it's F****** garbage...

BTW, the vending machines here still won't accept Canadian coin...

TORONTO garbage. Don't lump us all in with Toronto morons. Toronto shut down their incinerator and created their own garbage mess. Nobody else in Ontario would take their trash. That is, until Toronto bought the landfill close to where I live with a backroom deal. No worries the garbage is coming here soon not to MI anymore.

The question remains, did he really 'Put the public safety of Canadians at risk'? Sure he broke the law. Sure he should have known better, but the law on this matter needs doing away with. As do most of the umpteen gazillion gun laws on the books in both countries.

This type of rhetoric stinks pretty bad.

Its like an animal rights person who still eats Jello or gummy bears.

I worked with a girl like that. Claimed to be vegan, hated hunting, guns etc.
called her out on the jello thing "well I really like it"

some peoples "morals" stop at their desires i guess

sorry back on topic now.

guy obviously knew the rules or he would have claimed it, and wasnt made to go there--deserves the penalty in my book

what if in some country it was legal to have cocaine brought some and didnt "claim" it and got 20 yrs for it? would we say thats unjust. just follow the laws of what country you are going to or dont go

Perhaps if the old guy doesn't like the laws of Canada he should live in a free country like the United States.

He could even move to one of the good state like Virginia!

Oh, you say he was from Virginia? Well then why the hell was he going to Canada!
