Heckler & Koch P2000 growing pains

Finally took the recently purchased Heckler & Koch P2000 9mm out for it's test run and overall, I'm very pleased with this pistol. Extremely accurate, comfortable to shoot in terms of ergonomics and recoil using various ammunition, and a dream to clean up (easier than my Glock). This pistol really impressed me, but there's a few things that are nagging at me. P2000 owners, please chime in.

First off, the slide wouldn't always lock open after the last shot. I've read that replacing the mag springs with Wolff springs does help, but I'm disgruntled with it being a brand new gun and of H&K quality. Anyone else have this issue?

Secondly, there were a few FTE's on the very last round where the casing would get caught up at a weird angle and not eject, causing the slide to seize and subsequently needed to be cleared to be ready for the new magazine. I was using 115 grain Remington UMC ammo, so I'm not sure if the lighter load was the issue or if it was the pistol itself. Overall, it flung brass religiously and never had a failure during the firing cycle, but only on the last round in the magazine. Mind you, this wasn't all the time, but my girlfriend had three FTE's so I'm not sure if she was limpwristing it or not. I'll try this pistol out tomorrow with different loads, but it was frustrating to see this from an H&K pistol.

Lastly, it seems that a weird wear mark has started on the right side of the barrel locking block where it mates with the ejection port, directly under the serial number. While I understand wear will occur as part of the lock up and mechanics of the slide as it mates with the barrel, this concerns me because the pistol is new and only had 126 rounds run through it. The wear mark has reduced the finish down the side of the locking block and even though it doesn't affect function, it's just irritating to look at. Anyone else have this issue with their P2000? If it's normal, I won't worry about it. While I do believe my pistols are meant to be shot, accelerated wear - especially in the infancy of the pistol - is less than desireable. I'll try to post pics if I can get a decent close up.

Overall, this pistol is great. Lightened LEM trigger, night sights, and good leather make this quite the handsome carry package. It's been a bit since I've had the 'wow' factor from a pistol, but the P2000 left me with a smile on my face and a target with a gaping hole punched out. The issues mentioned aside, I'm very happy with it and am strongly considering the 45c as my next purchase.

I know, I know, what's a post without pictures. Here's a few of my new fascination with Heckler & Koch pistols, fresh from the range without a bath. I look at it as a new sibling for my P7.

I don't recall what kind of stoppages I had, but I had a few in the first 400 rounds. Nothing since (over 4,000 rounds). Some posts at HK Pro suggest hotter ammunition during break-in, such as M882 (U.S. military 9mm) but you can't find it everywhere.

I've had no problems with the slide not locking back. Make sure you're not inadvertently hitting the ambidextrous slide release. It's easy if you use a thumbs forward grip.

P2000 is a great gun. Mine has never had even one failure of any kind. It is very accurate, as accurate as I am anyway. I feels great and is small enough to carry concealed with no problem. Capacity is fine too. I believe the wear mark is normal. I use WeaponShield to coat the metal after cleaning and I think it does well. You probably have already seen to this but be certain your mag is assembled correctly. Someone years I had a problem with my USP.45c in that it would not feed the last round or two. Someone told me to load the mag full and let it sit for a couple of days. After that, I had no problems whatsoever. Probably didn't make a bit of difference but try it. I have several magazines for my P2000, P30, HK45c, and my USPs and have never had one problem with any spring. I did have to use hotter ammo with my P30 to get it to settle down and eject as it should. I used a couple of boxes of Fiocchi. S&B also is a little hotter. I never had a lot of luck with the UMC. I like Blazer Brass but it didn't eject well at first. It does fine now, just not as strong ejecting as the AE. Oh yeah, clean your magazines too if you haven't. Good Luck.

Nice photos. I have been extremely pleased with my P2000 and did not have any problems like you described. But P30 can have similar problems happen with the UMC ammo (see www.hkpro.com). Per HK USA, these guns are designed for hot rounds (+P, +P+, etc) and their extractors are tuned accordingly. Switch to a hotter ammo (Fiocci and the like) and shoot 300-400 rounds. After that, your P2000 will shoot anything.

And this is why I love this forum. Thanks to all who replied back. Hotter ammo sounds like it may be the key.

Storm, it's a piece of mountain bike innertube. Cut to the shape of the grip, then take a paper hole punch and make three holes on each end of the sleeve. Heat with a hair dryer and slide it on. I like it better for this pistol than the Hogue grip because I didn't want to mess with the ergonomics and it doesn't affect grip size whatsoever. Cheap, too.

That little wear stripe under the serial # is perfectly normal. All USPs (the P2000 is a modernized USP) have this wear. Many have it before even being sold.
