Hi i just registered to these forums, but ive browsed alot. My question is that i want a rifle that is decent for not that much money. I know doesnt everyone. Ive been looking and came across this rifle. Is that an okay rifle to start with? thanks. Oh and also is the cheapest ammo the ones from walmart. Thanks again -Alex

A bolt 22 is a decent place to start. I am not much on combo's, but at the 22 rimfire low end of recoil, the scope ought to last.

22's are always a good start. Cheap to shoot with no recoil. The next rifle will be one that will fit your needs, deer or varmet hunting.

I'll make 3... the .22 is a great way to start off. I also think your choice of rifle is fine.

Welcome to THR. Enjoy.

22lr is a great round that is cheap everywhere and yes it's probably cheapest at Walmart. The rifle is also nice and should be a great first timer.

When you start looking into centerfile rifles (if you do) then the cheapest well made rifle that handles many roles is an sks or ak (preferable the self converted kind) for me but i'm sure people will chime in that i'm wrong. It's really open to interpertation.

It's a good way to start. You have a good idea. I would, however, suggest that you look at a Ruger 10-22 for about the same amount of money. With that 10-22 you could slowly or gradually accessorize it according to what you want or need done to it. That way when or if you go with an M-4 or AR-15 you'll have an idea of what you'll eventually need or like. To top that off, the 10-22 is a semi-automatic which can give you faster fire if you would ever need it. Starting off with a .22 LR is a very good idea. Either one of these will work but the 10-22 has much more going for it over all.

Yeah, start with a .22LR......

Make yourself run it a couple of times each week.

With consistent practice you'll be better than most people here in no time.

welcome to THR its a great place

Except accuracy
hahaha +1:neener:

You picked a great gun as my name and sig implies I like savage.:D
If you want a semi-auto id also recommend marlin 60 they can be bought cheap, last forever, and are famous for shooting any brand ammo accuratly.

The Savage Mark II is an excellent choice. I just bought one myself and am waiting for it to come in. I didn't buy the combo though, I bought the Mark II FV and plan to put my own scope on it.

Great pick for a first rifle. I'll only add that as an avid plinker:D I've always had more fun with semi-auto .22s personally, so don't rule em out (and lets face it, .22s are all about having fun)

Oh and welcome to THR!

Sure, the Savage would be a fine choice, but I have to agree with the ironically named Savageshooter, and also suggest you check out the Marlin
60. I believe it's been the biggest selling .22 for years; reliable, accurate, and you'll probably have more fun with a semi-auto than with the slower bolt action. Wal-Mart has the stainless version for under $200.

If that's your budget, it's a good choice. CZ makes some really fine .22LR bolt rifles, if you can stand a bit more money. Czech them out:p. www.cz-usa.com and what you're looking for is some version of the CZ-452.

okay, now im very confused lol. i def cant get the cz because right now thats just too much money for me to justify using it on. I'm leaning towards the Ruger 10/22. Does anyone know of a sight and maybe stand for this gun thats price is decent?

IIRC, that rifle was named most accurate, AND best buy in Outdoor Life magazine. First time the same rifle earned both awards.

I'm leaning towards the Ruger 10/22

just so you know, the Ruger is not an accurate gun, as a savage mark II out of the box, you can make them very accurate, but that takes quite a few more dollars.

my vote goes for the the Savage .22lr Mark-II or Savage 64 Semi, because is more accurate then a ruger and i own one :D

Savage Mark II-F for $151.88

if you want a semi .22lr get a Savage 64 for $115.50

another option would be a SKS for $200-$210 from classicarms.us
SKSGUN09-B.jpg

they are great rifles but they kick more than a .22lr (same round as the AK47)

and on the other hand we have the Mosin Nagant 91/30 or M44, cheap rifles but very very good, ammo is cheap (surplus) but they kick more then the SKS.

M44 (smaller than a 91/30)

sarduy, is that first picture of your actual gun?? What extras do you have on it? also how much were those extras. Thanks again sorry for all the questions.

Go check out your local Walmart for that Savage Mark II. They sell them there (it's where I bought mine) and you can get great prices on them. FYI... I LOVE the gun. Had it for years and it's flawless. It was my first too so I have to agree that it's a great place to start.

I never did like the savage 64 or the ruger 10/22 standard. The triggers on both sucked and so did the accuracy. You'll be wanting upgrades soon. You can try buying a used 10/22 to get some modifications for cheap. The accu-trigger on the new Savage rifles are nice.

I just started shooting this winter. I wanted to get a savage, but I couldn't find one in stock anywhere. I went with a Winchester Wildcat instead.

When you are learning to shoot, you don't want to be wondering if your bad shots are because of you or the rifle. It just makes it harder to improve. For that reason, I would go with the savage.

.22lr is a great choice. You can move on to something bigger after you've had thousands of rounds of practice with the .22, for example, I just bought an AR.

I eventually want to get a semi-auto .22 sometime and I might even get a 10/22, but I'm glad I started with a bolt action. It forces you to slow down and think just a bit between shots.

But most importantly, get what you want! A big part of shooting is that it's fun. If you're shooting a rifle you don't want, it won't be as fun.
