No reply yet. They are decidedly anti-gun so there may never be any inquiry.

Word your request in a way that sounds like you want the manual so that you can find some information to turn in your gun-toting neighbor.

Well, I've got two phone calls so far. One from a clerk of my congressman and another from a clerk of one of my senators. They both basically said they couldn't find it. The one from my senator said she was requesting it and would let me know and the clerk for my congressman wanted to know if "Firearms Examination Procedures Manual" was the actual name. He went through a quick list of records he had and then told me I should maybe contact a gun store. I think he thought I was just looking for info on how to operate a gun or something. I didn't push it and just told him thanks.

Either way, please give me another day or so. I'm waiting to hear from one of the legal guys on what the next step should be from your end. I don't think they anticipated anything so frank.

Interesting Update!

Today I got a phone call from Sen. Carl Levin's office. Apparently the person with whom I had been corresponding left thier position and the person who took over called me to see if she could close the inquiry. She confirmed that it was the *CRS* that could not find the referenced document and wondered why I wanted it. I gave her a brief outline and asked that she send me an email to that effect. We'll see if I actually get one, having tipped my hand to the purpose of our effort...

Phone call from clerk...

"Why are you requesting this?"

"Because I don't want to be in violation of any laws or regulations, and I need to know how such determinations are made."

"Oh, well, we'll get back to you..."

Instead, there is an entire library of materials to guide and assist BATF officials in this area.

Wow. An entire library to be read, interpreted, understood, misunderstood, ignored, endorsed... As my teen-age daughter would say: "What ever!" What a great world for a BATF agent! Do anything, arrest anyone, shoot someone...

How groovy! An entire library at your disposal to validate your claim.
