Buy a .22 basic target pistol and learn to shoot it first. Forget about all of that "you need the have....". The best thing you can do is get really comfortable shooting, then every other gun will just be a matter of learning the nuances of its particulars (think about learning to drive, automatic trans vs. manual, once you have the basic concept of driving down the difference between the two is minimal).
I would suggest a CZ. They are very comfortable, point well, built well and are not picky about ammo. I have a CZ 75BD Police 9mm and I love it. You should be able to buy most of the CZ's for under $400. Good luck.

I've found the the only guns I've ever gotten rid of are guns that I bought because they were a deal. I suggest spending the extra money (around $600 for the 239) and getting what you really want. You only pay once for quality.
