Help me design my next 1991.

I don't like the idea that my only serious defense-caliber sidearm is in Ted's shop. So, I am seeking your input for a new weapon to be built after I get my other girl back. This is a defense-only pistol but that doesn't mean it shouldn't look good - much like a samurai sword.

The only constraints are that it must be a Series 80 (for work) and that it needs to be stainless. A chrome finish over stainless would be great, but a stainless foundation is important to me.

So far, I'm looking at a Caspian slide and frame w/o forward serrations. I also like the Liebenburg slide lock lever with that raised pin look. That's all I have right now, so pitch some ideas if you've got them.

Projected cost = $1200.

Good sights will be in order as will be a barrel. Hook those two up with some other parts to make the link complete

HankL, unfortunately, I didn't realize how bad the local smith would butcher my weapon. I didn't have any choice but to ship it off to a QUALIFIED smith for emergency surgery.

Ted Yost is working it up right now, but I'd like to make something from scratch instead of buying a used $500 Colt and replacing perfectly good parts, like the barrel, with new parts that might not be noticeably better. I have a real hard time throwing something away before it is completely worn out! There aint no sense in replacing a thumbsafety/gripsafety/sight/pin that is in spec and working fine.

Why not start off with a brand new Caspian frame/slide and go from there? I really like the looks of that Recon rail slide Caspian came up with for CQB Products.

The weapon has to be reliable and any mods would have to be practical. For example, the Dawson Precision screw-on accessory rail is more practical than a frame with milled in rails on a thickened dust cover because the TRP-Pro type of frame isn't compatible with most holsters. That's my thinking but I'd be glad to hear more about it.

Titanium isn't an option because I can't see the benefits. Super-light, but in a full-size 45acp? What's the point of all that added felt recoil? Stainless, ya. Chromed and Black-T'd, sure.

I would go with a ramped barrel, quality parts well fitted, wolf springs and I would leave the frame to slide fit slightly loose. You will lose little in accuracy and will improve reliability. My defensive .45 rattles just a little when I shake it and I trust it 100%. I can't remember the last time I hade a jam or FTF. Quality melted night sights are a must. I'm glad to hear your going with stainless steel, as after it is done you will most likely slobber on it whenever you pick it up.
