Ok, I just applied for my FID card and a pistol purchase permit yesterday. (I live in the PRNJ) I'm relatively new to firearms and would appreciate any help anyone can give me. Before I buy I do plan on firing a .45 ACP 1911 to make sure that is really what I want but at this point, I really like the history of the gun, the aesthetics (not my main reason but it helps) and the ergonomics. (I have an airsoft version right now which is supposed to be a 1:1) I have a friend who has one so I'll have to see if we can setup a time to go shooting to make sure the .45 ACP is right for me.

That said, I initially discounted it because when I was looking at them, I first saw prices of greater than $1k... a little out of my budget. I then stumbled upon the Springfield MilSpec and GI model which seemed to be more in my price range. I was thinking something in the $600-$700 range though could probably go a little higher if there was good reason to. (But I'd rather not go above $900)

I'm leaning towards the MilSpec because of the high-profile three dot sights. I know from shooting my airsoft version that the old style sights can be a pain. I also figure the polished feed ramp and lowered and flared ejection port wouldn't be a bad thing to have either.

I also wouldn't mind tinkering... I have a general tendency to take things I own apart and fiddle with them and I have a feeling that I would probably do the same with this. The one thing I was thinking of trying was to fit a beavertail grip safety on it. Think this is do-able for someone with no metal working experience? (I've read that I may have to do some filing) I've done woodworking, just no metalwork.

So does this sound like a good plan or should I choose something else as a beginner? Should I look at another 1911? I'm open to suggestions and from what I understand, I may have about a 4 month wait to make my decision. :banghead:

And yes, I know, I know... I should get out of NJ... I'm working on it.

I own 2 mil-specs and think they are a great value and a great gun. There are semi-drop in beaver tails that do require some fitting. I had no experience either and pulled it off. Just do some research online first.

I also recommend the Springfield because of their warranty. If you like to tinker and take things apart the mil-spec is perfect. Buy an armorers video or just look up the disassembly instructions online. All you need is a flathead screwdriver and a punch.

Ascetic. I don't think this word means what you think it means. :D

The aesthetically pleasing 1911 is always the right choice. You mention good sights, all the mil-specs I've seen used GI sights. Hmm.

Anyway, in your price range I'd recommend.

Colt or a Kimber Custom II (their base model).

If you want to tinker and learn, try for an STI Spartan or Rock Island Tactical models.

D'oh... spell check got me.

Well springfield has a model they call MilSpec that has what they call "High-profile 3-Dot sights." It's the model just above their G.I. model.

Thanks for the other recommendations, I'll look into those as well.

I left NJ, come on down to SC!!! I moved two years ago and will NEVER move back...( i am a born and raised jersey girl)

i have the taurus 1911 with crimson trace laser grips..love it)

I recently purchased a Mil-Spec and couldn't be happier with the fit, finish and overall quality of the handgun. It's also been 100% reliable so far with WWB ammo.

45s...

Like you, I've been lookin for a 1911 but tryin to stay in the $500-600 range... And basically from all I've heard/read the best choices NEW, seem to be the SPRINGFIELD (GI series) and the TAURUS (1911B)... Held/shot the Springfield, and like it... a basic gun (under $500) but sights are kinda poor (I'm used to CZs and SIGs)... Haven't held/shot a Taurus... But from what I've found I think the 'edge' is toward the Springfield for qualty, customer service and reliability. Keep us posted on your search. Lookin to shoot a Taurus some time soon.
Thanks

I recently picked up a GI and love it. But, if I could do it all again, I'd go for the Mil-Spec for the 3 dot sights, the old style sights are tough if the lightning isn't great and pretty much worthless at night.

I ended up going 1911 after I fired a friends Colt, and my GI is everything his Colt was (in my opinion) minus the sights. Just as accurate and reliable (for me).

You can't go wrong with a springer I've never owned one I didn't like. I'm feeling like a STI fanboy tonight so I have to say check out the pistols from STI. Great value for the money IMHO.
