Personally, I don't like COLD... Texas gets hot, but western Maine in the summertime ain't exactly comfortable, even that far north.... i can deal with extremes of temperature, but I'd rather not have to deal with BOTH extremes of temperature. Also, (gun issues and weather aside), I'd want to own LAND... for hunting. To that end, I'd be looking in western VA for something rural, with lower property tax/ real estate costs.

This is an interesting resource for the question. I should note that it is written from a libertarian standpoint, so they take things like victimless crime laws and economic freedom into consideration.

(FYI, New Hampshire was #1)

I don't like real cold weather, so given your choices, I'd choose VA. My choice would be further south than VA.
VT and NH are also to liberal for my taste and I would NEVER live in any "blue" State.

I sit in FL and do the same - without shivering all winter from the bitter cold
How's that AC bill looking? I'd rather put on a coat and gloves than hide indoors from that brutal FL sun.

Strangely, PA has very decent gun laws. I've never felt oppressed. You'll find a lot of open wooded space in the northern centralish part of the state along with a lot of "let me the hell alone" attitude.
But there are other attitudes that come along with that in some cases - people can be very small minded at times.
I also agree on the semi-auto hunting rule for PA though. It's rediculous and the people who support it are idiots. I oppose it every chance I get.

I don't get why you need a semiauto to hunt in PA. Especially when its only a two week firearm season. You can hunt with a handgun. It just can't be semiautomatic. The only hunting law that should change is to allow hunting on Sunday. The game commission does a very good job of managing the species so I don't see a drastic need to change things.

PA might be a blue state but that's only because of Philadelphia/Pittsburgh. The rest of the state is fairly conservative. But the majority live in those cities so that's how the vote swings.

There is also a very drastic difference in local taxes depending on where you live. As well as how close amenities/stores are. There are parts of the state where you will drive an hour+ to the grocery store. Then there is the south east where everything you want is within 15 minutes. Less public land for hunting but it does have the largest deer population which is reflected in the almost limitless doe tags.

Philadelphia is a suburb of New Jersey, Harrisburg is a suburb of Maryland, and Pittsburgh is a suburb of Ohio. The rest of the state rivals any other place in the country as far as the flame of liberty and gun rights.

Sam1911, are you comfortable sharing whereabouts in Central PA you live? I'm from Altoona.

I live near Gettysburg. Very gun friendly down here. Last time I was stopped by a cop(headlight out) we spent 15 minutes sitting on my fender discussing gun shops and shooting ranges. :)

I believe VT has the least amount of gun laws compared to the other states listed. No permit necessary for concealed carry. Nice!

The bad news is it is expensive to live there and it's not letting up. VT has high sales tax, higher real estate tax and high real estate prices. Keep that in mind.

But pretty much any law against guns in VT was enacted due to hunting. And there aren't too many of those.

A whole lot less than your heating bill, besides, I have a pool.........;)

I lived in ND for two winters, spent more time indoors because of the brutal cold and its dangers than I do here with the sun - noon means NAP time........ :D

VT does allow that "No Guns" signs have the force of law. Entering any place that is posted while carrying is automatically trespassing and can get you 3 years in jail or a $500 fine.

NH and also does similar.

In PA, no trespass occurs unless you are asked personally to leave and then refuse. In VA the signs only have force of law if posted in locations specified under the law.

Anchorage is not ND. ND is brutal summer and winter. My temps are moderated by the ocean. I don't need a pool, I don't need noon naps. I just go out and enjoy the wonderfull 65 and sunny Alaska summers.:)

I would double check, but i don't believe that PA taxes retirement incomes...another pluss. And as long as you stay away from Philly (shudder) you should be fine with your guns.

:) Even Philly isn't bad like some folks think. Carry is pefectly legal there, and there are several very active shooting/competition clubs nearby. (Even in the metro area!) Plenty of pro-gun folks around.

I was going to say the same thing. I don't think people that complain about Philly have ever lived there. Yes there are areas you don't want to visit let alone live. But overall it's not a bad city. I feel a lot safer in Philly then I do in Reading which I currently live closer to. Main reasons to avoid Philly are traffic and higher taxes. Both sales and city income tax.

I grew up in PA and I like the state even though I live in TN now. The winters aren't a big deal except for the occasional major snow storm, unless you are near Lake Erie where the lake effect occurs. The cold is manageable. It is a great state. The taxes are increasing, but compared to NJ, overall they are nearly nothing.

The PA State Game Land system that was started in the early 1900's is wonderful. The state bought large tracts of land back then for pennies after they were completely logged off.

Hunting and trout fishing is good to very good. Like I said, great state!

Sam1911, never really considered Gettysburg "Central PA"... more SE PA (anything SE of the I-81/I-78 corridor), but Gettysburg is technically S Central PA.

Buy a motor home and full time it. Then you can be subject to ALL the gun laws in the country. That's what I'm going to do, just like Beavis and Butthead Do America. Just can't wait for the body cavity search in DC....:what:
