I have a DPMS lower with a 6-pos. stock. I am going to use a detachable carry handle and or scope, I want the flat top so I can change my mind. I want a 16" barrel, but not a "lightweight" or not bull. I am leaning towards a HBAR (Heavy Barrel) or an M4 barrel. I want CAR hand guards. I don't see my self shooting past 100yrds very often. I love the look of the M4.

What of these two uppers should I get and Why?

Option #1: DPMS M4 upper, M4 barrel, flat top, $400

Option #2 Rock River Arms CAR A4, HBAR Barrel (chrome lined), flat top, $470

How many rounds do you think that you will be shooting on the average range trip? To me it worht $70 bucks for the heavy chrome lined barrel in case I decide I want to run a lot of rounds out of it everytime I go to the range.

the DPMS is not a "M4", its a 1-9 twist. I too am not a big fan. I've also bore scoped many of their "M4" barrels and have to say I don't plan on owning another anytime soon.

I am not a big fan of the HBAR for general use either because of the extra weight.

Both good options. I like chrome lined barrels for all non-precision uses, they are corrosion resistant, may be easier to clean, and may last longer. Not a big difference between the two otherwise. Apart from chrome lining, I would have suggested the M4 profile for your short-range uses.

I have a RRA that has been a fine performer & recenlty picked up a DPMS that has been good so far -- but there is just something I really like about the RRA

i have a Bushy HBAR 16" and i just love it. i don't have any use for M4 profile barrels since they are 14.5 inches and have permanently attached doo-hickies on the end of the barrel, i'm never going to attach an M203 to it, and honestly, i i like the aesthetic appeal of the HBAR barrel being uniform all the way from the FSB to the muzzle. having a 16" barrel makes for changing the doo-dad on the end of the barrel a breeze. i put an A1 flash suppressor on mine just for giggles, i guess, but the thing is, i could change it without drilling out a pin or rewelding anything.

IF YOU HAVE A DPMS LOWER
get the dpms upper
matches and fits the lower
i build only on their lowers and uppers
you can get any barrel etc for any upper
buy a stripped upper you want
add the barrel you want etc etc
get what you want
not just what someone list

I just bought one of these from AIM. I hate the way the 16" barrel looks with the carbine handguard so I always wanted the mid-length.
