My war with the skunks has reached a peak. Discovering one coming through the doggy-door two nights ago has escalated the conflict.
All other options have been tried and failed. So...
Anyone have any suggestions for an inexpensive, bolt-action, long barrelled .22 that would diminish the sound of a sub-sonic round to about the sound of a cheap Crossman pump pellet gun?
I tried the round with my Ruger 10/22 and it was too loud. I'm thinking that a long barrelled bolt action would take the noise down considerably.
I've hit several skunks with the Crossman at 15 pumps and all it does is make them look at me. A head shot, at 50 ft while holding a spotlight, with iron sights, is a little beyond my skill level.
Any other options or modifications would be appreciated and no, not interested in live-trapping as they drew first blood... :fire:
Thanks

Compound BOW !! you can get a nice 10 to 12 year old bow for $50.00 or less.
The Bow works real nice on bigger animals If you live in a neighbor hood where cops will come when guns go bang.

Just about any decent .22 bolt gun or a breakdown like the Rossi,...with a .22 Short or cb round would quiet things down considerably. I have also used a cb or short in a semi auto pistol. Just be advised that it won't be strong enuff to cycle the action,..and effectively becomes a single shot.

When I was a kid my friend used to shoot his tube fed Marlin 60 inside city limits all the time with CB caps. They are relatively quiet. They won't cycle of course but if I remember correctly he could cycle another round fairly quickly by pulling the bolt while holding the rifle at an angle to ensure the casing dropped.

I can assure you they will eliminate skunk sized animals.

The shorts or CB caps will work o.k. loaded one at a time, at close range. They are not as apt to spray if shot through the lungs. I've used them a lot on the same critter.

Go get some fox/coyote urine and spray it around the outside of your house/property and the skunks will leave.

The Aguila Super Colibri run just under 600fps and are very quiet out of a 22 rifle. I've killed rats and moles with them.

My wifs is a died eye on unwanted critters with her old rem scoremaster bolt with 22cb's. She has shoot to coons on the bird feeders at 10 feet and the second one did not know the first was hit. I did realize what she did till it was over. You just hear a trigger release and a very small putt. Thats in a 24" barrel.

My Brother was having a rat problem feeding under his two bird feeders recently and used the Aguila shorts loaded in an old Springfield model 87.
He told me he was amazed at how quiet these shorts were after he cleaned three rats clocks compared to the regular 22 long rifles his Marlin model 60 must use.
I know shorts and longs are almost a thing of the past but I for one certainly wished the rifle makers would not have with a very few exceptions stopped offering these chamberings for the .22.
Growing up in the mid 60's shorts were pretty popular because they were a bit lower in price than the long rifles.
On top of that practically every .22 rifle made with very few exceptions back then were chambered for all three .22 rounds.

my recomendations would be the marlin 39a and the Aguila Super Colibri that someone else beat me to. quiter than any bigger faster pellet gun and its a 20gr round at about 500 fps. you hear the hammer fall and the bullet hit the target. just need to shoot it a few times and make sure that you shoot it once and make sure the bullet clears the barrell. good luck, o and you can load around 25 of those guys in the mag on the standard 39a.

Check around at the local pawn and gun shops. Anything that will shoot 22lr 'can' shoot cb's or shorts. CB's are easier to find and are very quiet.

Locally I can buy 22lr beaters in semi-auto or bolt for $60 plus or minus $10.

Skunks will still emit their scent when shot as part of the death reflex so try and shoot them as far from the house as possible.

Good luck.

Thanks guys. I get the impression that any bolt action .22 firing a sub-sonic round would do the trick. I'll check around for a used one and give it a go.
Tried the scent trick on coyotes that were hangng around (used Mountain Lion scent) and it worked for a couple of weeks.
I just tossed out a bunch of chocolate last night as I've read they'll eat it and expire. I'll give it a couple days to see if that works. If not, time to go Spec Ops...
A part of me hopes the chocolate doesn't work....

Another vote on the super Colibri. Through a Remington model 5, sounds like a sneeze. Should change a skunks mind.

First off I'd get a better dog, then a GAMO pellet rifle. It will do a fine job. You can get one that's pretty quite. Don't use the PBA Raptor Ammo, Their supersonic 1200fps. Mine has a 3-9x40 scope. I keep in practice shooting turtles in the pond.

Hard to beat either a Remington or a Mossberg bolt action for what you are needing. You are going to have to go to CB's instead of just subsonic rounds to get to pellet gun noise level. If CCI CB's don't get the job done you might try Rem. CBee's which are 33 grain HP's but loaded to CB powder levels. Might be a little louder than regular CB's but not by much and they kill very well indeed at 25 yards and under.

Since you are in AZ and already have a 10/22 would you consider a .22 suppressor? That would get it pellet gun quiet, and most subsonic ammo will cycle them in case you need some quick follow up shots.

This is a fun post. I too have used the little shorts available at any gun store. I think the ones I get have a little powder and some just have the primer only. I have a neighbor that occasionally catches squirrels (they are a menace on his garden) with a live trap and then he would bring them to my house. I would shoot them in the garage with a Ruger single-six using the little shorts. It sounds like a cap gun. I imagine with a rifle at short range those shorts would do the trick. Quiet and efficient. Good luck.

Live traps.

Look for where the skunks are getting under the house (there has to be a reason they're coming around. If you have dog food/cat food outside put it up. Put the trap in a black contractor garbage bag so you won't get sprayed and bait the trap with peanut butter. When the critters are snuggly in the trap drop another bag over the exposed door end and transport them far from your home to a wooded area and release them OR take them to the humane society to get rid of.

Much safer than dealing with a potential rabies carrier.

I second the GAMO air rifle suggestion. I have no more varmint problem at my house and the neighbors are none the wiser. GAMO Big Cat springer with standard round nose pellets exceed 1000fps, thats probably more than a .22 short. Lots of fun to shoot and cheap too.

It won't. You would need either a true air rifle (some can really make that pellet move), or a suppressor on your .22.

The book on my pellet rifle said to sight the scope in at 100yds. I have finally got it set best for me to shoot turtles. I'm sighted in around 65yds. It's around 3" high at 35yds. I have no problem killing turtles or snakes, Also I shoot about 4 days a week all summer long. It's good practice.

How about a nice pellet gun? I don't know if that would be any quieter than a subsonic .22.
