I am am stuck in what to get i wanna get a shotgun probably a 870 that can carry 7 shells, and have a 18 inch barrel for it and also have a longer barrel for dove and quail hunting as well. Any suggestions on the most cost effective route to obtain this goal?

I have seen 2 ways to go at this first getting the home defense shotgun and then just buying a extra barrel for it.

Then i was thinking about standard 870 that is made for bird shooting, and upgradeing the mag extension and buying a shorter barrel. The mag extension i saw off gun broker though looked kinda cheap are they just as good as would be having the homedefence model that already has the extended capasity or no

Any opinons or experinces would help me out

thanks a bunch

In a word... combo. Maybe not exactly your 18" barrel, but a 20" with rifle sights and an Improved Cylinder choke (fixed, not tubes). Plus a 28" vent rib barrel with choke tube. See the following link for info, be aware other outlets handle combo packages too. Shop around.

As for that mag extension, I think TacStar is hard to beat, if you want to spend more $$$ for approximately the same thing, try Wilson. Remember to limit your total mag capacity to two shells for migratory game birds.

For a one- gun setup serving multiple purposes (home defense, small game hunting, deer hunting, clays etc) this IMHO is absolutely the best idea going, the most versatility for the money. And a heck of a lot of gun for the money too. Want sights? They're on the 20" barrel. Want tritium in your sights? Easy to install glow-in-the-dark replacements in the existing bases. Spend money extending your forcing cone on the 20" barrel, putting on tritium sights, and then (horrors) have to sell your shotgun 'cause you need cash? Sell the gun with the long barrel installed, hang on to your modified/accessorized 20" barrel investment until the next 870 comes along, and you're set up again.

No permanently mounted sights on your receiver to get in the way with the 28" barrel, take off the 20" barrel and the sights are gone too. Add sling studs for detachable swivels and you've pretty much got it. The shotgun changes roles as easily as changing barrels. Not a lot to ask for a single gun capable of being configured to effectively meet so many uses, is it?

I've experimented with a lot of the options, from turning an 870HD into a Scattergun clone (yeah, been at it a while) to trying to get a workable setup for the least money possible. The above pretty much covers it as near as I can tell.

Go with a 20" rifle sight barrel with tubes, a lot more versatile than without, you can go from IC for slugs to Super full for turkey or long range buckshot. Add a 28" vent rib for flying critters. Wilson combat mag ext.,it has a loop for a sling, http://www.wilsoncombat.com/sa_mag_extensions.asp i don't care for that barrel/clamp thing to hook up a sling that tacstar or choat has.

I'll agree with the combo recommendation.

Remember to limit your total mag capacity to two shells for migratory game birds.

And want to watch a Game Warden turn red? Leave the mag extension on the gun and put a plug in it so the capacity is with in the law.

I had the tactical 870 out one year, and yes it had a plug in it. Game Warden showed up and thought he had me cold. He wasn't happy when he could only shoe two rounds in there.

He had it coming though. Seen him every year on opening weekend for years. He just knows we're up to no good. Never has written a ticket though.
