After removing the rubber grips from my 27-3 bought earlier this year I discover the grip frame does not have the locator pin. It came with a set of Rubber Hogues that did not utlize the locator pin for installation.

Any idea what size pin I need or where to order one? I know have a nice set of wood grips which of course requires a locator pin.

Thanks for any info.

No worries. The part you're looking for is called a "stock pin" and is commonly available - you can get one from S&W directly (it's their part number 07022000, and lists for 51 cents) or you can go to Brownells or Midway (they sell it for $1.61) and probably many other gun parts suppliers. I had the same issue with a M586 I bought that was wearing Hogues.

I will cost you 5X that in shipping and handling so buy something else you like while your at it to make it worthwhile.

It is not necessary to remove the pin to put Hogue grips on a S&W.

In fact, it has to be there for the spring steel Hogue screw adopter to hang off of.

How were your grips even attached??

I can't answer for the OP, but on my 586 there is a U-shaped spring steel piece that fits inside the frame, hanging down. The open ends of the U each have a hole, and there's a small aluminum piece that fits into the holes something like on a toilet-paper holder. That aluminum piece is drilled and tapped to accept the grip screw. The whole arrangement fits exactly where the stock pin would be, and covers the hole. If the pin were still in place it would not be possible to install the grips using this arrangement.

Yes I am familiar with the Hogue mounting system that utilizes the stock or locator pin. In fact I own a few Smiths with that exact set up.

My 27-3 arrived with Hogues that were firmly attached with a different style mounting bracket that did not use the pin and apparently required pin removal. Perhaps this was the old way that were originally mounted.

Anyway I'm mounting a set of wood Smith & Wesson grips.
